SITE INVESTIGATION β ENGINEERING GEOLOGY
Site investigation is the process of studying the ground conditions of an area before construction starts. It involves examining the soil, rocks, groundwater, geological structures, and other conditions that may affect a project.
WHY SITE INVESTIGATION IS IMPORTANT
Site investigation helps engineers and geologists to:
- Know the type and strength of the soil and rocks.
- Determine the depth and condition of the foundation materials.
- Identify faults, fractures, and weak zones.
- Check the groundwater condition.
- Identify possible problems such as landslides, erosion, and subsidence.
- Choose the most suitable foundation and construction method.
STAGES OF SITE INVESTIGATION
1. DESK STUDY
Available information about the area is first collected. This may include geological maps, topographic maps, satellite images, previous reports, and borehole records.
2. FIELD INVESTIGATION
Geologists visit the site and examine the ground directly. They may carry out geological mapping, drilling, trial pits, sampling, and geophysical surveys.
3. LABORATORY TESTING
Soil and rock samples collected from the site are tested in the laboratory. Tests may determine strength, moisture content, density, grain size, permeability, and other properties.
4. INTERPRETATION AND REPORT
The results from the field and laboratory work are analyzed and presented in a report. The report provides recommendations to engineers for safe construction.
COMMON METHODS USED
- BOREHOLE DRILLING: Used to investigate materials beneath the surface.
- TRIAL PITS: Used to examine shallow soil and rock layers.
- SOIL AND ROCK SAMPLING: Samples are collected for laboratory testing.
- GEOPHYSICAL SURVEYS: Used to investigate underground conditions.
- GEOLOGICAL MAPPING: Helps identify rock types, faults, fractures, and other geological features.
