HQ Nigerian Army The Nigerian Army official page. In 1865, the "Glover Hausa" became a regular force with the name "Hausa Constabulary".

The history of the Nigerian Army dates to 1863, when Lt Glover of the Royal Navy selected 18 indigenes from the Northern part of the country and organized them into a local force, known as the "Glover Hausas". The small force was used by Glover as governor of Lagos to mount punitive expedition in the Lagos hinterland and to protect British trade routes around Lagos. It performed both police and mi

litary duties for the Lagos colonial government. It later became "Lagos Constabulary". On incorporation into the West Africa Frontier Force (WAFF) in 1901, it became "Lagos Battalion". In addition to this force, the British Government included the Royal Niger Company (RNC), Constabulary Force in Northern Nigeria in 1886 and the Oil Rivers irregular in 1891. In 1889, Lord Fredrick Lugard had formed the incipient body of what was to be known in 1890, as the West Africa Frontier Force, (WAFF), in Jebba, Northern Nigeria. The new unit expanded by absorbing the Northern Nigeria-based elements of the Royal Niger Company (RNC) Constabulary. By the end of 1901, it had incorporated all paramilitary units in the other British dependencies into its command, thus fully meriting its designation "WAFF". The establishment of West Africa Frontier Force (WAFF) led to the merger of all units into regiment in each of the dependencies. The merger in Nigeria produced the Northern Nigerian Regiment and Southern Nigerian Regiment. The First commanders of the Southern Regiments of WAFF were Lt CHP Carter (1899-1901) and Col J Wilcox (1900-1909) respectively. The two regiments were later used for expeditions during the annexation of Nigeria by Lord Lugard between 1901 and 1903.With the amalgamation of Nigeria in 1914, the unification of the Northern and Southern Regiments came into being and this witnessed the birth of the Nigerian Regiments. The Northern Nigerian Regiments became the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Nigerian Regiment, while the Southern Nigerian Regiment became the 3rd and 4th Battalions of the Nigerian Regiments (NR). The Mounted Infantry of the Northern Regiments became the ordinary Infantry Battalion after the Second World War. A field artillery also existed in the Northern Regiment. With the visit of Queen Elizabeth of Britain between 28 January and 15 February, 1956, the Nigerian regiment was renamed the Queens Own Nigerian Regiments (QONR). Also in the same year, the regionalization of the WAFF came into existence and each military force became independent of the other. As a result, the QONR became the Nigerian Military Force (NMF). By 1st June, 1958, the British Army Council in London relinquished control of NMF to the Nigerian Government. In 1960, when Nigeria became independent, the NMF became known as the Royal Nigerian Army (RNA). When Nigeria became a republic, the RNA changed to the Nigerian Army. In the same year, the Army changed its uniform, rank structure and instruments from those of RWAFF to new ones including green khaki uniform.

UPDATE ON TERRORIST ATTACK ON TROOPS IN THE TIMBUKTU TRIANGLE

1. On 16 January 2025, troops of Operation HADIN KAI commenced operation DESERT SANITY IV as part of a wider measure to completely defeat the terrorists in the North East Region. In the course of the operation, troops dislodged terrorists from their enclaves in Jemyeri, Abulam, Agum and Digamari. Troops further stormed ISWAP training camp at Garin Baban Alhassan, destroyed the camp and neutralized 18 including 3 notorious commanders identified as Talha, the ISWAP women leader, Mallam Umar the RPG trainer and Abu Yazeed the ISWAP Brigade Commander in the Timbuktu Triangle.
On 22 January 2025 at about 2:40pm, troops of 199 SF Bn, Combat Teams 6 and 8 married up at Gardiri for the final onslaught on the notorious terrorist enclave. As precursor operations, troops cleared terrorist camps at Burbur, Lamisuri, Kassachia and Buk destroying all life supporting structures within these strongholds. It is worthy to state that the terrorists were placed on the backfoot as they were on the run all through seeking to find new hideouts within the Timbuktu Triangle.

2. Due to the pressure on the terrorists and a sign of desperation and last resort, on 24 January 2025 at about 7:10pm, the terrorists cowardly rammed into troops at their harbor position with a Vehicle Borne IED at Gardiri base killing a Commanding Officer, 2 officers and some of our very brave men while injuring 20 others. Conversely and conservatively too, the troops neutralised more than 60 of the terrorists during the one week long operation . Also, 14 AK 47 rifles, 6 RPG tubes, 18 motorcycles and 24 AK 47 magazines were recovered by our gallant warriors.

3. Based on this development, a comprehensive review of the operation is being carried out to enable a re-launch. Meanwhile, It is pertinent to set the records straight that there was no terrorist activity at Malam Fatori which led to casualty on own troops as widely circulated in some media outlets by mischief makers. The only recorded incident occurred at the Timbuktu Triangle in Damboa LGA of Borno State as narrated earlier . The media report making the rounds is therefore fake, baseless and should be disregarded.

4. May the souls of our fallen heroes rest in perfect peace. Amen. Adieu gallant warriors!

GOC 6 DIVISION COMMENDS TROOPS FOR CONTRIBUTION TO INCREASED OIL PRODUCTION IN NIGER DELTA

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 6 Division, Nigerian Army (NA), Major General Jamal Abdussalam, has praised the efforts of his troops for significantly boosting oil production in the Niger Delta Region (NDR) over the past year. In his farewell address delivered at 63 Brigade in Asaba, Delta State, on 21 January 2025, Major General Abdussalam acknowledged the key role their hard work has played in helping achieve increased oil output in the region.

The GOC expressed his gratitude to the troops, stating that his visit to Asaba was primarily to thank them for their outstanding contributions during his tenure. He encouraged them to maintain their dedication and continue working towards achieving the Federal Government’s target of 2.3 million barrels per day (bpd), which is crucial for the nation’s economic growth. He noted that reaching this target would positively impact the country’s economy and ensure the prosperity of all Nigerians. Reflecting on the current progress, Major General Abdussalam noted that oil production in the region has risen to around 1.9 to 2 million bpd, a significant improvement. However, he emphasized the importance of meeting the 2.3 million bpd target to avoid economic challenges, such as relying on borrowing to finance the national budget. He urged the troops to remain focused, disciplined, and professional, underscoring that their work directly supports the nation’s fiscal health. Above all, he called on them to protect the esteemed reputation of the Nigerian Army.

The GOC also reminded the troops that postings within the Nigerian Army are routine and that, as he transitions to his next assignment, he wished them success in their ongoing duties with 6 Division. He urged them to continue prioritizing their personal and operational security and to avoid any involvement in illegal activities in the region. He also requested that they extend the same level of cooperation to the incoming GOC to ensure continued success.
In his remarks, Brigadier General Ugochukwu Unachukwu, Commander of 63 Brigade, expressed deep appreciation to Major General Abdussalam for his exemplary leadership and fatherly guidance. He credited the GOC’s leadership as a significant morale booster and acknowledged the lasting impact of his mentorship on the brigade.

The farewell visit included the commissioning of the Brigade Commander’s official residence and the inauguration of a newly constructed 471-meter dual carriageway connected to a roundabout at the 63 Brigade permanent site, named Lieutenant General TA Lagbaja Drive, located in Ibuzo. The visit concluded with speeches to officers and soldiers, as well as a group photograph.
