CGC Adeniyi Commiserates with Gumel Emirate, Jigawa State

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has commiserated with the government and people of Jigawa State and the royal family of the Gumel Emirate over the death of the late Emir of Gumel, His Royal Highness Alhaji Ahmed Muhammad Sani II.

According to a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs Tahir Balarabe, on Friday, 5 September, 2026, CGC Adeniyi was represented at the funeral prayer held at the Gumel Emirate Palace by the Acting Customs Area Controller, Kano/Jigawa Area Command, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Usman Adamu.

DC Adamu, who conveyed CGC Adeniyi’s condolences to the royal family, the Gumel Emirate and the government and people of Jigawa State, described the passing of the late Emir as a great loss to his people and the nation.

He said the late traditional ruler would be remembered for his long years of selfless service to his people, his commitment to peace and unity, and his concern for the welfare and development of the Gumel Emirate.

“The death of His Royal Highness is a great loss to the Gumel Emirate, Jigawa State and indeed Nigeria. He was a respected traditional leader who dedicated many years to the service of his people, while consistently supporting the efforts of the Nigeria Customs Service and other agencies operating within his domain to safeguard our borders and promote legitimate trade.”

He added, “On behalf of the Comptroller-General of Customs, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the royal family, the people of Gumel and the government and people of Jigawa State. At this difficult moment, we share in their grief and pray that Almighty Allah grants the deceased eternal rest and gives his family, subjects and loved ones the strength to bear the loss.”

The funeral prayer attracted dignitaries from within and outside Jigawa State, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Governors of Jigawa and Kano States, royal fathers, government officials and thousands of mourners from all walks of life.

The late Emir reportedly spent 46 years on the throne, making his reign one of the longest in Gumel Emirate's history.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has earned commendation from the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, for its groundbreaking revenue performance, strategic technology investments, and ongoing trade facilitation reforms.

Speaking during his inaugural board meeting and facility tour at Customs Headquarters in Abuja on 2 September 2026, the Minister praised the Service's leadership and officers for their remarkable progress in modernising operations and boosting national revenue.

According to him, Customs has demonstrated unprecedented operational strength in 2026, generating N4.03 trillion in the first half of the year alone, followed by N1.38 trillion across July and August. The agency, he says, remains firmly on track to achieve its ambitious N11 trillion annual target, a milestone driven by aggressive automation, intelligence-led reforms, and improved cargo processing strategies under Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi.

Impressed by the Service's modern intelligence tools and technological infrastructure, Oyedele said Customs’ track record is the ideal springboard to propel Nigeria into a leading position in regional and global trade.

"Results are precisely what should propel us to do more," the Minister stated, noting that Customs' strong foundation equips the Service to pioneer world-class standards in port efficiency, end-to-end transparency, faster cargo clearance timelines, and revenue integrity. "Nigeria must lead through performance, not rhetoric."

Reaffirming President Bola Tinubu's full backing, Oyedele assured that the Federal Government remains committed to empowering the NCS with cutting-edge technology, modern operational tools, and strong policy support to sustain its trajectory as a premier trade facilitator in Africa.

The honour was conferred on Thursday, 3 September 2026, at the THISDAY Dome in Abuja during the centenary celebration of the Daily Times newspaper. The event gathered prominent figures across government, commerce, and traditional institutions to celebrate key individuals and organisations shaping Nigeria’s growth.

Nigeria Customs Hands Over 189,000 Intercepted Ammunition Cartridges to Weapons Control Agency

In a major boost to national security efforts, the Niger/Kogi Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has formally transferred 189,000 illicit cartridges to the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW).

The large consignment comprising 7,560 packages containing 25 cartridges each was officially handed over on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, at the Command Headquarters in Minna by Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Mohammed Umar.

Customs originally intercepted the ammunition on 18 June 2018, but it remained in agency custody while court proceedings and administrative requirements were finalised.

Speaking at the event, Comptroller Umar emphasised that the handover aligns with directives from the Comptroller-General of Customs to step up border surveillance and frustrate illegal arms movements that fuel domestic insecurity.

"We will continue to strengthen border surveillance, intelligence gathering and inter-agency collaboration to prevent the illicit movement of arms and ammunition into the country," Umar stated. He noted that while the suspects connected to the 2018 seizure remain at large, active leads are still being pursued to bring them to justice.

Receiving the consignment, NCCSALW Zonal Director for the North Central Zone, Abdul Eneche, praised the NCS for its vigilance, noting that the agency has facilitated the destruction of over 19,000 illegal weapons since its establishment.

Eneche stressed that inter-agency cooperation and continuous intelligence sharing remain essential to cutting off the supply of contraband weapons to insurgents, kidnappers, and criminal syndicates across the nation.

Customs Launches Floral Beautification Initiative to Promote Officer Wellbeing, Workplace Productivity

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced a floral beautification initiative at its Headquarters in Abuja as part of efforts to promote officer wellbeing and create a more welcoming, relaxed and productive workplace environment.

The initiative was led by the Comptroller of Administration, Human Resources Department, Ditan Tiyatiye, who on Monday, 31 August 2026, presented carefully curated floral arrangements to the office of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, as well as other strategic locations within the Headquarters complex.

Tiyatiye explained that the initiative was inspired by the belief that the physical environment can influence the mood, wellbeing and productivity of personnel, noting that introducing elements of nature into workspaces could contribute to a more pleasant atmosphere.

“A beautiful environment contributes to the way people feel and work,” she said, adding that simple touches of nature could promote happiness, relaxation and greater efficiency among officers and other personnel.

She disclosed that the initiative began on the sixth floor of her former department before expanding to other areas, including the Information and Communication Technology Unit, offices of senior officers, the visitors’ lounge and the main auditorium.

According to her, the latest floral arrangements were carefully sourced and personally designed to complement the different spaces, particularly areas frequently used by officers, visitors and senior management.

Beyond beautification, Tiyatiye said the initiative was intended to contribute to officer wellness by creating an environment capable of motivating personnel and supporting them in the effective discharge of their responsibilities.

She encouraged officers across the Service to adopt similar initiatives within their respective workspaces, stressing that collective attention to the work environment could contribute to a more positive and productive organisational culture.

Customs Highlights B’Odogwu, Strategic Communication Reforms at ACSPN Conference

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has highlighted the strategic role of communication in advancing institutional reforms, trade facilitation, revenue generation and stakeholder engagement, with particular emphasis on its B’Odogwu digital modernisation platform.

The National Public Relations Officer of the Service, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada, stated this on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, while representing the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, at the 13th Annual Conference of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN) held at the National Open University of Nigeria, Abuja.

Maiwada stressed that communication was indispensable to the effective implementation of the Service’s mandate, noting that technological and institutional reforms could only achieve their intended objectives when properly communicated to stakeholders. “Our critical role in trade facilitation, revenue generation and anti-smuggling cannot be effective without effective communication,” he said. He explained that the NCS had continued to deploy technology and innovative approaches to improve its operations, citing B’Odogwu as a major component of the Service’s digital transformation agenda and an innovative trade model attracting attention beyond Nigeria.

The Customs spokesman also highlighted the Service’s “Town and Gown” initiative, designed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and professional practice in communication. He noted that the initiative had already commenced at Bayero University, Kano, and in Port Harcourt, with plans to deepen the integration of academia into Customs engagements in 2027.

According to him, stronger collaboration with communication scholars and professionals would enable the Service to benefit from contemporary research, professional expertise and emerging communication technologies, while providing academic institutions with practical insights into Customs operations and institutional communication.

The conference, which brought together communication scholars, professionals and institutional stakeholders, also examined the changing communication environment and the implications of emerging technologies for democracy and electoral processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In his opening remarks, the ACSPN President, Professor Rotimi Olatunji, emphasised the importance of informed citizens, credible media and transparent institutions to the sustenance of constitutional democracy, while a keynote presentation delivered on behalf of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Sani Adam, drew attention to emerging threats, including deepfakes, AI-generated content and candidate impersonation.

The NCS participation followed an earlier engagement on Monday, August 31, 2026, when the Service hosted the leadership of ACSPN at its National Headquarters in Abuja to explore collaboration in digital communication, media engagement, professional development, and stronger ties between academia and the Customs Service. Building on this momentum, the conference featured technical sessions on electoral communication and digital-age challenges, ultimately culminating in a dinner and award ceremony that recognized distinguished contributions to communication scholarship and professional practice.
