NOSDRA DG Joins Environment Minister at Nikkah Ceremony

The Director-General/Chief Executive of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Engr. Chukwuemeka Woke, FNSE, DSSRS, joined the Minister of Environment and other dignitaries at the Nikkah ceremony of the daughter of the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment, Mallam Salihu Aminu Usman, PhD.

Engr. Woke congratulated the couple and joined family members, colleagues and well-wishers in celebrating the joyous occasion.

He wished the newlyweds a happy, peaceful and prosperous marriage, praying for Allah’s continued blessings and guidance in their marital journey.

JOINT INVESTIGATION VISIT (JIV) CONDUCTED AT RENAISSANCE AFRICA ENERGY COMPANY'S DIEBU CREEK–NUN RIVER DELIVERY LINE, BAYELSA STATE

The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, conducted a Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, following a reported crude oil spill on the 10-inch Diebu Creek–Nun River Delivery Line Right of Way at Eniwari, Bayelsa State, operated by Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited.

The incident occurred and was reported on 23 July 2026. During the investigation, the Joint Investigation Team established that the spill resulted from sabotage involving the use of an explosive device on the pipeline.

The estimated volume of crude oil spilled was 88 barrels, while the recovery of free-phase oil was ongoing at the time of the visit. The spill impacted approximately 1.621 hectares of the surrounding environment.

At the conclusion of the investigation, the Joint Investigation Team recommended the immediate cleanup and remediation of the impacted area in line with regulatory requirements. The team also urged the operator to strengthen surveillance and security measures along the pipeline corridor to help prevent future incidents and protect critical oil infrastructure.

NOSDRA remains committed to its mandate of ensuring timely oil spill response, promoting environmental sustainability, and safeguarding Nigeria's ecosystems through effective collaboration with industry operators and other stakeholders.

JOINT INVESTIGATION VISIT (JIV) TO THE RENAISSANCE AFRICA ENERGY COMPANY LIMITED OIL SPILL SITE AT BISENI, BAYELSA STATE

The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), alongside relevant stakeholders, on Friday, 24 July 2026, conducted a Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) to the site of the oil spill incident on the 6-inch ADNE Bulk Line at Tein, Biseni, Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, operated by Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited.

The incident occurred and was reported on 28 June 2026. The affected location gained widespread public attention after a video of the incident circulated on social media on the same day. Following the report, immediate intervention by the response team led to the isolation of the affected pipeline, successfully bringing the fire under control and preventing further escalation of the incident.

The Joint Investigation Visit, originally scheduled to take place earlier, was delayed due to community-related issues that prevented members of the Joint Investigation Team from gaining access to the spill site.

During the investigation, the team established that the spill resulted from sabotage, as a hacksaw cut was observed on the exposed section of the 6-inch pipeline. The cut extended from the 1 o'clock to the 3 o'clock position, indicating deliberate interference by an unknown person.

The estimated quantity of crude oil spilled was 2 barrels, while no crude oil had been recovered at the time of the Joint Investigation Visit. The investigation also revealed that burnt vegetation surrounded the impacted area, providing further evidence of the fire incident that followed the spill. The spill impacted an estimated 0.0070 hectares of land.

Following the assessment, the Joint Investigation Team recommended that Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited immediately commence the cleanup and remediation of the impacted area.

NOSDRA, Federal Fire Service Strengthen Partnership in Kwara

The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Ilorin Zonal Office, on Thursday, 30th July 2026, hosted the newly appointed State Controller of the Federal Fire Service, Kwara State Command, ACF Adisa Sarafadeen Ibrahim, on a courtesy visit aimed at strengthening inter-agency collaboration.

Welcoming the delegation, the Acting Zonal Head of NOSDRA, Mr. Ogun Williams Adeyinka, described the visit as a significant step towards enhancing cooperation between the two agencies.

Speaking during the visit, ACF Adisa Sarafadeen Ibrahim said his visit was to formally introduce himself and foster a stronger working relationship with NOSDRA. He disclosed plans to organize fire drill exercises to equip NOSDRA staff with basic fire safety and emergency response skills, while also inviting the Agency to participate in the Federal Fire Service's sporting activities to promote closer institutional ties.

In his remarks, Mr. Ogun Williams highlighted the strategic role of the Federal Fire Service in the National Oil Spill Contingency Plan and reaffirmed NOSDRA's commitment to sustained collaboration, particularly in staff capacity development and joint compliance monitoring of petroleum retail outlets across Kwara State.

The meeting concluded with both agencies reaffirming their commitment to deepening partnership in advancing public safety, environmental protection, and effective emergency response for the benefit of Kwara State and the nation at large.

EU PROJECT 91 EXPERTS VISIT NOSDRA REFERENCE LABORATORY TO EXPLORE CAPACITY-BUILDING PARTNERSHIP

The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) Reference Laboratory (NRL), Port Harcourt, on Thursday, 30 July 2026, received a delegation of European Union (EU) Project 91 Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) on a working visit to assess opportunities for technical collaboration, with a strong focus on capacity building.

The delegation was led by Professor Farouk Jaber of a Lebanese university and accompanied by Dr. Opeoluwa Fasanya.

Welcoming the delegation, the Head of the NOSDRA Reference Laboratory, Dr. Kenneth Aroh, highlighted the Agency's mandate under the NOSDRA Act of 2006 to coordinate the implementation of the National Oil Spill Contingency Plan and ensure effective response to oil spill incidents across Nigeria.

Dr. Aroh explained that the Reference Laboratory provides scientific support for oil spill investigations, remediation monitoring, environmental quality assessment, hydrocarbon fingerprinting, post-impact assessments, proficiency testing, facility inspections, and environmental sample analysis using internationally accepted laboratory standards. He also introduced the delegation to the laboratory's operational units, including the Microbiology, Toxicology, Wet Chemistry, and Analytical Laboratories.

Reaffirming the laboratory's commitment to research partnerships and technical cooperation, Dr. Aroh outlined key operational challenges, including inadequate power supply, limited access to modern analytical equipment, the need for continuous specialised manpower development, and reliance on external experts for troubleshooting sophisticated laboratory instruments.

The visit underscored the NOSDRA Reference Laboratory's growing role as a centre of scientific excellence while providing an opportunity to showcase its capabilities.

JOINT INVESTIGATION VISIT (JIV)

A Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) was successfully conducted on Monday, 27 July 2026, following a reported crude oil spill on the 6-inch Ogboinbiri/Tebidaba Pipeline at Okpotuwari, operated by Oando.

The incident occurred on 27 July 2026, and the investigation was carried out on the same day by representatives of the relevant stakeholders to ascertain the cause, extent, and impact of the spill.

Findings from the investigation revealed that an estimated 10 barrels of crude oil were discharged, out of which 3 barrels were recovered. The spill impacted an estimated 2,668.21 square metres of the surrounding environment.

During the inspection, investigators observed the presence of surface crude oil both within and outside the company's Right of Way (RoW). Following excavation of the affected pipeline section, there was clear evidence of a suspected hacksaw cut on the facility, extending from the 9 o'clock to the 12 o'clock position. Based on the physical evidence observed at the site, the cause of the spill was determined to be sabotage.

The team also noted significant oil-stained vegetation both within and beyond the company's Right of Way, indicating that the spill had adversely affected the surrounding environment.

To mitigate the environmental impact, the Joint Investigation Team recommended that Oando immediately commence the clean-up and remediation of the impacted area in line with regulatory requirements. The team further advised the company to strengthen surveillance and security measures along its pipeline network to deter acts of vandalism and prevent future incidents.
