NNRA Strengthens Regulatory Capacity of South-South Zonal Office Staff in Port Harcourt, Rivers State from 3 - 4 September 2026.

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), in collaboration with Halimasalam Nigeria Limited, has successfully conducted a two-day capacity-building training for staff of its South-South Zonal Office in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The programme, themed “Strengthening Regulatory Competence, Inspection Effectiveness, and Service Delivery Reforms,” focused on enhancing regulatory competence, inspection effectiveness, compliance, security awareness, information management, and service delivery.

The training underscores NNRA’s commitment to continuous professional development and institutional capacity building to strengthen the regulation of the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear and radiological technologies in Nigeria.

Participants commended the programme and pledged to translate the knowledge and skills acquired into measurable improvements in regulatory performance, inspection quality, compliance monitoring, and service delivery.

The NNRA therefore calls on participants to put the knowledge gained into practice, uphold the highest standards of regulatory professionalism, and contribute actively to a stronger, more responsive, and effective regulatory system for Nigeria’s nuclear and radiological sector.

NNRA Highlights Need for Stronger Oversight of Nuclear Brokering and Transit Controls

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) has highlighted the need to strengthen regulatory oversight of nuclear brokering and the transit/transshipment of nuclear-related materials in Nigeria. The emphasis was made during the Authority’s weekly in-house seminar held on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, where Mr. Livinus Odeh, representing Springwell Intercontinental Resources Limited, delivered a presentation titled “Nuclear Brokering, Transit/Transshipment of Uranium Yellow Cake.”

The presentation examined the concept of nuclear brokering and the proposed facilitation of international trade in uranium yellow cake. Springwell Intercontinental Resources Limited explained that its proposed brokerage activities would connect suppliers and buyers across international markets, with no uranium yellow cake intended to pass through or be stored in Nigeria. The session also examined the regulatory requirements applicable to uranium yellow cake as source material under IAEA safeguards, alongside the need for effective controls over brokering, transit and transshipment activities to mitigate the risks of diversion and nuclear proliferation.

Discussions further clarified the distinctions between brokering, transit and transshipment, with emphasis on the need for appropriate regulatory intervention and oversight. Key recommendations included the adoption of relevant definitions and good practices established by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), consideration of brokering and transit/transshipment activities on a case-by-case basis, and the establishment of a national database of nuclear brokers operating in Nigeria. The seminar underscored the importance of a robust regulatory framework, effective monitoring and continued national and international cooperation in ensuring the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear materials, while fulfilling Nigeria’s national and international obligations.

NNRA ASSESSES RADIATION LEVELS AT MINING SITES IN UGWU ONYEAMA, ENUGU

The South-East Zonal Office (SEZO) of the NNRA has conducted an assessment of radiation levels at two mining sites in Ugwu Onyeama, Enugu State. The assessment covered the Aka Ajaja and Onyeama mining sites and was undertaken to ascertain radiation levels and identify potential radiation safety concerns associated with activities within the affected areas.

The assessment revealed elevated levels of background radiation at both sites, raising safety concerns for workers, residents and other members of the public who may live, work or carry out activities within and around the affected locations. Prolonged or repeated exposure to elevated levels of ionizing radiation may increase the risk of adverse health effects, underscoring the need for appropriate regulatory intervention and measures to control and minimise potential radiation exposure.

In response to the findings, the NNRA, through its South-East Zonal Office, is taking appropriate regulatory and enforcement steps to address the identified radiation safety concerns and ensure compliance with applicable radiation safety standards and regulatory requirements. The Authority remains committed to protecting public health, safeguarding the environment and ensuring that mining and other activities with potential radiation risks are conducted responsibly and in accordance with established safety standards.

NNRA, NTA Yenagoa Forge Partnership to Strengthen Radiation Safety Awareness

The NNRA, Bayelsa Operational Office, has initiated discussions with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Yenagoa, to strengthen public awareness on radiation safety and the safe use of ionizing radiation. The engagement, held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, focused on leveraging NTA’s wide reach to educate the public on radiation risks, regulatory compliance and the importance of using licensed facilities.

The NNRA team, led by the Operational Head, Dr. Esendu Benedict, highlighted radiation applications in medical and industrial fields, as well as the risks of uncontrolled exposure and the need for compliance with regulatory requirements. NTA Management expressed its willingness to support the Authority through radio and television jingles, interviews, documentaries, public service announcements and other educational content. Both organisations also agreed in principle to formalise the collaboration through an appropriate framework.

The partnership will promote sustained radiation safety awareness across Bayelsa State, including the use of the Safe X-Ray App to help the public identify licensed diagnostic facilities. The NNRA will provide accurate technical content, while NTA will support publicity and coverage of regulatory activities. The collaboration is expected to improve public understanding, encourage safer choices, strengthen compliance and contribute to protecting public health and the environment.

Strengthening Radiation Safety: NNRA Reviews IAEA ORPAS Mission

The NNRA has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening occupational radiation protection and ensuring the safety of workers exposed to ionising radiation in Nigeria. The commitment was underscored during the Authority’s weekly in-house seminar held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, which reviewed the outcome of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Expert Mission on the Occupational Radiation Protection Appraisal Service (ORPAS).

Presenting the mission’s outcome, Godwin B. Ekong, Ph.D., Assistant General Manager, Radiological Safety Department, highlighted progress in Nigeria’s occupational radiation protection programme, including the promulgation of the Nigeria Basic Ionizing Radiation Regulations 2023, improved dosimetry services, the first national dosimetry inter-comparison exercise and the development of a web-based National Dose Registry. He also identified priority areas requiring sustained attention, including monitoring of itinerant workers, implementation of lens, neutron and internal dosimetry, and the operationalisation of the National Dose Registry.

The review reaffirmed the importance of continuous regulatory oversight, effective monitoring and compliance with radiation protection requirements in safeguarding occupationally exposed workers. By strengthening its regulatory infrastructure, technical capabilities and monitoring systems, the NNRA continues to enhance radiation safety practices and contribute to a safer environment for workers, patients, the public and the nation.

NNRA GOMBE ENGAGES STATE MINISTRY OF HEALTH ON RADIATION SAFETY

The NNRA North-East Zonal Office, led by Mr. Tanko Yusuf Baba, on 28th July 2026 paid a courtesy visit to the Gombe State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Danladi A. Bojude, to strengthen partnership on radiation safety in healthcare facilities.

The meeting discussed appointing Radiation Safety Advisers and Officers, obtaining operational licences, and organizing a State-wide sensitization workshop for public and private hospitals. The Commissioner welcomed the collaboration and assured support for NNRA’s regulatory mandate.

NNRA Strengthens Safety Through Effective Nuclear Medicine Inspections

The NNRA has emphasised the importance of effective regulatory inspections in ensuring radiation safety and compliance in nuclear medicine facilities. This was highlighted at the Authority’s weekly in-house seminar, which featured a technical presentation on “Inspection Procedures for Nuclear Medicine Facilities” by Mr. Abdullahi Hassan, Deputy Manager, Medical Application Safety Department.

The presentation focused on the need for a systematic and comprehensive inspection process, stressing that inspections should go beyond identifying areas of non-compliance to assessing the overall safety culture of facilities and measures in place to control radiation risks. It also highlighted key inspection stages, including pre-inspection preparation, facility assessment, review of records and exit briefings, with particular attention to radiation monitoring, personnel safety, equipment performance, radioactive materials management and safety programmes.

The seminar further underscored the importance of competent personnel, effective Radiation Safety and Quality Assurance Programmes, proper equipment maintenance, emergency preparedness and accurate record-keeping. The presentation concluded with a call for accountability and continuous improvement, reaffirming the role of robust regulatory inspections in promoting a strong safety culture and ensuring that nuclear medicine services are delivered responsibly and in line with established safety requirements.

NNRA Gombe Zonal Office Engages Gombe State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources

The NNRA, North-East Zonal Office, Gombe, has engaged the Gombe State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to strengthen collaboration on radiation safety, environmental protection and sustainable mineral development. The delegation, led by the Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Tanko Baba Yusuf, paid a formal visit to the Ministry on 6 August 2026 and congratulated the Honourable Commissioner, Alhaji Sanusi Ahmad Pindiga, on his reappointment for a third term.

During the engagement, the NNRA highlighted opportunities for collaboration in capacity building, joint oversight, information exchange and public awareness. Particular emphasis was placed on sensitisation of miners, host communities and other stakeholders on the safe use of technology involving ionising radiation, including Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORMs) and Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (TENORMs). The Zonal Office also proposed sensitisation workshops aimed at promoting radiation safety and sustainable mineral development.

The Honourable Commissioner expressed appreciation for the visit and reaffirmed the Ministry’s readiness to partner with the NNRA in safeguarding human health and the environment from the harmful effects of ionising radiation. He emphasised the Ministry’s commitment to working closely with the Authority and directed relevant officials to collaborate with NNRA personnel. The interactive engagement underscores the shared commitment of both institutions to strengthening regulatory cooperation, environmental sustainability and public safety in Gombe State.
