*** EKIRS Staff Urged to Embrace Unity; Shun Working in Silos

Members of staff of the Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service (EKIRS) have been reminded to embrace unity and cooperation in their activities to achieve the organisation’s goals for the remainder of the year and beyond.

The Director of Personal Income Tax, Mr. Joseph Olorunfemi, gave the charge on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, during the Service’s Monthly Prayer Meeting held at the Revenue House, Ado-Ekiti.

Speaking on the topic, “The Power of Unity,” Mr. Olorunfemi described unity as the foundation of progress, noting that no organisation can make meaningful progress when some members are pushing forward while others are pulling backwards.

He said, “An organisation is like a system, and every part must function effectively and complement one another. When one part fails, the whole system suffers. When every part works together, progress becomes faster.”

According to him, for EKIRS to move faster and achieve greater progress, there must be unity of mind, mutual support and the pursuit of a common goal. While acknowledging that staff members work in different departments and have varying responsibilities, the Director stressed that all efforts must ultimately be geared towards achieving the overall objectives of the Service.

He cautioned staff against unhealthy competition, showmanship and arrogance, stressing that unity accelerates progress, produces greater results, solves problems, promotes peace, builds trust, overcomes challenges and makes great things possible.

Mr. Olorunfemi further reminded staff that they are essential to the progress of EKIRS, while praying for the grace and willingness to cooperate with one another towards achieving the organisation’s goals.

The Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr. Wasiu Mohammed, who led the monthly prayer session, prayed for the continued growth of EKIRS, its leadership and the Ekiti State Government. He also prayed for the continued peace and prosperity of Ekiti State.

In his monthly charge, the Executive Chairman of EKIRS, Mr. Olaniran Olatona, represented by the Director of New Growth Areas and Other Taxes, Mrs. Sade Daramola, warned staff against complacency, describing it as a “momentum-killer.” He urged members of staff to remain committed, continue striving for excellence and contribute their quota to the growth of the Service.

Reiterating the need for unity of purpose, Mr. Olatona urged staff to avoid working in silos as they commence the new month, stressing that collective effort remained critical to sustaining the Service’s progress.

*** EKIRS Warns LGs, LCDAs Against Illegal Revenue Collections

The Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service (EKIRS) has warned Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the State against engaging in revenue collections without legal backing.

The Chairman of the Service, Mr. Olaniran Olatona, gave the warning on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the Ekiti State Joint Revenue Committee Meeting held at the Revenue House, Ado-Ekiti. The meeting was attended by Chairmen of LGAs and LCDAs, Directors of Finance and Accounts, and Rate Officers from across the State.

Olatona said taxpayers were becoming more knowledgeable about their rights and obligations, making it imperative for revenue-generating agencies to remain professional and operate within the confines of the law. He stressed that revenue collection without legal backing could have serious consequences, urging local authorities to ensure that every revenue imposed and collected was supported by appropriate legislation.

The EKIRS Chairman assured the local authorities of the Service’s continued support, describing EKIRS as a “big brother” to the councils and encouraging them to seek clarification whenever necessary. He also urged the councils to learn from their counterparts across the country who have made significant progress in revenue administration.

Speaking on the topic, “Review of Revenue Collection and Reporting by Local Governments and LCDAs,” the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr. Wasiu Mohammed, said the Ekiti State Revenue Administration Law 2025 had provided the necessary framework for effective revenue administration at the local level.

He identified the provisions of the law to include harmonised revenue heads, cashless and e-receipted collection, delegation and revenue-sharing arrangements between the councils and EKIRS, as well as mechanisms for coordination and reconciliation.

Also speaking on “Taxes and Levies Approved for Collection by State and Local Government,” the Head of Direct Assessment, Mr. Oluwasegun Ogunsanya, said the objective of local revenue administration should not simply be to generate more revenue, but to ensure that the right revenue was collected from the right taxpayer, at the right rate, through the right authority and under the right law, with proper accountability for every naira collected.

Mr. Ogunsanya cautioned revenue officers and consultants against inventing taxes or levies, collecting revenue without legal authority, collecting the same revenue twice, using multiple collectors for the same revenue head without lawful authority, mounting unauthorised roadblocks, issuing unofficial receipts, demanding cash where electronic collection is mandated, arbitrarily increasing statutory rates or threatening taxpayers into payment.

In her presentation, the Legal Adviser and Secretary to the Governing Board of EKIRS, Mrs. Emmanuella Akinyemi, outlined the functions of the State Joint Revenue Committee.

She said the Committee was responsible, among other things, for implementing the decisions of the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), advising the JRB, State and Local Governments on revenue matters, harmonising tax administration across the State and Local Governments, and enlightening members of the public on State and Local Government revenue matters.

In his Vote of Thanks, the Chairman of Ikere Local Government Area, Hon. Olu Adamolekun, appreciated the participants for their attendance and cooperation, while commending EKIRS for hosting the meeting.

The ceremony was conducted under the leadership of the 6th SWIT National Chairperson, Dr. Mrs. Caroline Ndubuisi, FCTI.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Ndubuisi said empowering women to lead benefits society as a whole, noting that women leaders contribute to increased productivity, stronger collaboration and greater fairness.

She identified the roles of women tax administrators and consultants in advancing the economy to include improving tax administration, widening the tax net and promoting greater citizen participation. She therefore urged members of SWIT to actively contribute to increasing women's leadership and participation in decision-making on tax practices in Nigeria.

Dr. Ndubuisi expressed confidence in Mrs. Daramola's ability to take the Ekiti Chapter to greater heights, while charging her and the other executives to remain conscious of the responsibility entrusted to them.

The Special Father of the Day and Honourary Treasurer of CITN, Prince Isola Akingbade, mni, FCTI, described the pioneer executives of Ekiti SWIT as a crop of highly savvy, knowledgeable and deeply rooted professionals who, he said, were capable of “moving mountains.”

He noted that female tax administrators in Ekiti State had become increasingly active in recent times, while commending Mrs. Daramola for accepting the responsibility of leading the chapter for the next two years.

Prince Akingbade said Mrs. Daramola's doggedness and courage would be valuable assets during her tenure, urging the Ekiti SWIT executives to shun unhealthy competition and embrace cooperation.

On his part, the Chairman of the Occasion and Executive Chairman of EKIRS, Mr. Olaniran Olatona, FCA, FCTI, expressed confidence that SWIT Ekiti would attain greater heights under the leadership of Mrs. Daramola and her executive members.

Mr. Olatona urged members of the Society to deploy their influence as women to encourage their husbands, sons and other members of their families to embrace tax compliance, noting that increased tax revenue would provide government with more resources for development.

Earlier, The Keynote Speaker, Dr. Sileola Akinbowale, FCTI, who spoke on the theme, “Taxation, Professionalism, and Women's Roles Beyond Politics,” charged Ekiti SWIT to build a chapter that would be stronger and more effective than its counterparts.

Mrs. Daramola pledged that the new executives would accept the mandate with determination and an unwavering commitment to justify the confidence reposed in them. She said the chapter's agenda would be centred on building, uniting, empowering and growing its members and the profession.

According to her, the chapter would leverage professional expertise, embrace innovation and deepen collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including EKIRS, the Nigerian Revenue Service, the CITN Tax Academy, ministries, departments and agencies, institutions and the private sector, to enhance the capacity of its members.

The Pioneer Coordinator called for the support of relevant stakeholders through the sharing of ideas, lending of expertise and bringing their passion to the development of the new chapter.

*** EKIRS Chairman Urges Women Against ‘Superwoman Trap'

The Executive Chairman of the Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service (EKIRS), Mr. Olaniran Olatona, has urged women in management to avoid what he described as the “Superwoman Trap,” warning against deriving their identity solely from their achievements.

Mr. Olatona gave the advice while delivering an address at a virtual learning session with the theme; “Present in the Boardroom, Depleted Behind the Door: Ekiti Women in Business”, organised by Ekiti Women in Management on Thursday, August 27, 2026.

He noted that the pressure to carry one’s career, marriage, children, family and ministry to perfection could lead women into the “Superwoman Trap.” According to him, women are not called to be superwomen but to be faithful, urging them to replace the pursuit of perfection with responsible stewardship.

Mr. Olatona explained that a woman’s value should not be determined by what she produces, advising women to avoid constantly trying to prove that they deserve their positions. He also cautioned against the unhealthy competition that could arise from a woman’s determination to prove that she can perform better than a man entrusted with a particular responsibility. Rather, he charged women to learn to delegate, prioritise, simplify and rest.

The EKIRS Chairman further encouraged women to recognise the season of life they are in and avoid comparing themselves with others. “Do not compare your private life with another woman’s public outcome,” he said, adding that; “different seasons require different priorities. Every opportunity is not necessarily an assignment for the season.”

He also urged women not to turn their homes into a second shift after the workplace, noting that returning home after several hours at work only to face heavy household responsibilities could be physically and emotionally draining. Mr. Olatona consequently appealed to men to support their wives, stressing that shared responsibilities and partnership are beneficial to the family. He said; “a home that runs on partnership builds a family that thrives together. Marriage is a partnership, not a competition between two careers”.

He concluded by stressing the importance of recognising personal limits and allowing room for rest and renewal. “The strongest woman is not the one who never gets tired; she is the one who recognises her limits, receives grace, makes wise adjustments and continues from renewed strength,” he said.

Speaking on the importance of rest and vacation, the spouse of the EKIRS Chairman, Prof. Folu Olatona, urged women to make effective use of their annual leave for relaxation and renewal.

She advised women to deliberately disengage from both their work environment and household responsibilities for periods during their leave, noting that doing so would enable them to achieve adequate rest.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, the Permanent Secretary in the Ekiti State Ministry of Health and Human Services, Mrs. Olusola Gbenga-Igotun, appreciated Mr. Olatona for devoting his time and energy to the presentation.

Mrs. Gbenga-Igotun described Mr. Olatona as a blessing to her, saying the presentation had reinforced her belief that he has a ministry to people. She also appreciated Prof. Olatona for her message on the importance of vacation and rest.

In her opening remark, Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Office, and Coordinator of Ekiti Women in Management, Dr. Oyeyemi Kayode-Ojo, said the session was born of the need to ensure that women find time to rest out of their busy schedule so as not to break down.
