The engagement focused on identifying practical strategies to transform the airport into a key economic asset that enhances connectivity, facilitates trade and tourism, and strengthens Ondo State's appeal as a preferred investment destination.

Ondo State Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa inaugurated a Technical Committee on Monday on the revival of the Olokola Free Trade Zone (OKFTZ), a project that has been dormant for nearly two decades. Conceived in 2005 as a joint initiative between Ondo and Ogun states, the zone was designed to leverage its Atlantic coastline location as a strategic economic gateway for the South-West and Nigeria. Governor Aiyedatiwa called the inauguration a historic step to transform the long-standing concept into an economic reality, citing its potential for thousands of jobs, major investments, and industrial expansion.

The reactivation gained momentum after Dangote Group President Aliko Dangote expressed resolve to return to Olokola for the development of Nigeria’s largest industrial and free trade hub. Plans include independent power generation, gas infrastructure, cement production, and a plug-and-play environment for investors.

Chaired by Chief Bode Sunmonu, the Technical Committee will review legal agreements, interface with stakeholders like Dangote Group, NEPZA, and Ogun State, verify land ownership, resolve community compensation issues, and secure host community support. Members were chosen for their competence in infrastructure, finance, law, and project management.
The committee has six weeks to submit its report to align with Dangote Group’s planned site mobilization. Chairman Sunmonu confirmed the Committee had already commenced work and pledged a transparent, globally compliant ex*****on, crediting the Governor’s leadership for Dangote’s return.

ONDIPA CEO and the Committee’s Secretary, Bar Emmanuel Omomowo pledged the agency’s full support for the Technical Committee activities, moreso when another ONDIPA’s Director, in the person of Engr. Femi Akarakiri is also a member.

The inauguration was attended by top State officials, including the Deputy Governor, Speaker of the State’s House of Assembly, Chief Judge of the State, and other Executive Council members.

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa met with Sahara Energy executives in Akure in their drive to push the reactivation of the PPL 270 and PPL 271 oil fields that have been dormant since 1998. He said delays in investment decisions and infrastructure gaps must be addressed for Nigeria to meet the Presidential target of raising crude oil production from about 1.6 million to 2 million barrels per day. The Governor argued that Ondo, currently ranked 5th among oil-producing states, could contribute significantly more if its assets were properly developed.

Mr. Governor emphasized that boosting output depends on fixing structural issues like leakages, outdated systems, and human error through digitalization and utilization of modern equipment. He assured investors of a peaceful, supportive environment and said the State has awarded dredging contracts to improve waterway logistics to the production area, with more interventions planned for the host communities. His administration pledged to build investor confidence, expand production capacity, and ensure oil-producing areas see development benefits.

Sahara Energy Executive Director Kola Adesina described the asset as “stranded” and representing untapped value for the people. He said the company is conducting technical integrity tests and assessments to determine what’s needed for full reactivation, as part of efforts to align with government priorities and deliver shared prosperity to host communities.

Adesina noted that increasing Nigeria’s oil output will require sustained investment, technical commitment, and strong partnerships, and affirmed Sahara’s commitment to responsible development and stakeholder engagement. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Governor and key commissioners, including Finance, Energy & Mineral Resources, Environment, the CEO Ondo State Development and Investment Promotion Agency (ONDIPA), among others.

The President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote has announced plans to develop Nigeria’s biggest industrial and Free Trade Zone at Olokola in Ondo State, with construction set to begin in the last quarter of 2026. During a courtesy visit to Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa in Akure on Monday, Dangote said the project will be a fully equipped, industrial park featuring power generation, water, gas infrastructure via the East-West offshore Gas Gathering System EWOGGS, cement production, and logistics. The goal is to eliminate infrastructure bottlenecks so manufacturers can simply “plug in” and operate without relying on self-provided infrastructure, especially electricity: a constraint he says has hindered Nigeria’s industrial growth for over 30 years. Contractors are expected to mobilize within three to four months, with a request for a State representative on the project board to improve coordination.

The Dangote Group had attempted to invest in Olokola but faced operational challenges that shifted key projects to Lagos. Dangote noted that renewed engagement now reflects improved conditions and stronger collaboration with the State government. He emphasized that the zone will go beyond a conventional free trade area by integrating a dedicated energy supply and other utilities directly into the site. The initiative is projected to drive large-scale job creation, industrial expansion across Ondo and neighboring regions, and boost export revenues, similar to the group’s projects in Lagos.

Governor Aiyedatiwa welcomed the investment as a milestone in Ondo’s industrialization agenda, citing the State’s strategic location along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, its deep seaport license, and mineral deposits such as limestone which is suitable for cement production. He confirmed that a technical committee has been set up to work with Dangote Group on the legal, land, community, and operational frameworks, pledging to nominate a State representative to the board soon.

The Governor assured full government backing and close collaboration with investors and host communities to ensure smooth implementation and long-term sustainability. Key state officials in attendance included the Deputy Governor, Chief of Staff, and Commissioners for Finance, Energy, Commerce, and Environment, the CEO Ondo State Development and Investment Promotion Agency (ONDIPA), among others.

The Port of Ondo Multi-Purpose Deep Sea Port project reached a critical implementation milestone on Monday, June 8th, 2026, when Ondo State Development and Investment Promotion Agency (ONDIPA) received a joint high-powered Due Diligence team from the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

The visit follows the Federal Executive Council’s revalidation of the Port Ondo license in November 2025 and represents a key regulatory phase needed for final construction approvals. It signals strong strategic alignment between the Federal Government and the administration of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.

The deep-sea port is a flagship project under Governor Aiyedatiwa’s OUR EASE agenda, which focuses on opening opportunities, unlocking resources, reinvigorating the economy, expanding infrastructure, stimulating investment, and empowering residents. The Governor has positioned the port as a generational infrastructure asset intended to establish Ondo State as a major maritime and trade hub in West Africa, demonstrating an unwavering political will to advance the project.

The visit began with an intensive technical session hosted by ONDIPA management, led by CEO Barr. Emmanuel Omomowo and the Governor’s Special Adviser on Marine and Blue Economy Engr. Olu Aladelusi. This was followed by a comprehensive site inspection at Erunna-Ogboti, Ilaje Local Government Area, led by ONDIPA’s Director of Business Development, Engr. Femi Akarakiri.
Concluding the visit, Barr. Omomowo conveyed Governor Aiyedatiwa’s appreciation to the Federal team, thanking them on behalf of the government and people of Ondo State for their commitment and professionalism.
