The African Union Commission, in collaboration with AMCOW and partners, will commemorate World Water Day 2026 under the AU Theme of the Year: "Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063". This high-level event highlights the role of water and sanitation in advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls across Africa.

The tide has turned. With the endorsement of the Africa Water Vision 2063 & Policy, Africa’s water and sanitation agenda now flows at the highest political level.

At the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of African Union in Addis Ababa, African leaders endorsed the Africa Water Vision 2063 & Policy. This endorsement marks a turning point – from commitment to coordinated continental delivery. Water and sanitation are no longer treated as sectoral challenges, but recognised as strategic drivers of economic transformation, climate resilience, regional integration and prosperity.

As H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the Union Commission, stated:

“Investing in water and sanitation is not a cost. It is one of the highest return investments Africa can make.”

H.E. Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, President of AMCOW, stressed:

“The Africa Water Vision 2063 and Policy places water at the heart of Agenda 2063 – as a strategic asset for prosperity, peace and resilience.”

The Vision & Policy now serves as: - The framework turning Agenda 2063’s water ambition into action - Africa’s unified voice ahead of the UN 2026 Water Conference

They are strategic pillars of Africa’s transformation.

The continent has chosen to act.

Africa’s transboundary water resources connect us. Now we turn dialogue into action.

Tomorrow, 17-18 February 2026, leaders, water experts and development partners gather in Addis Ababa for the Continental-Level Consultation and Exchange Event on Transboundary Water Cooperation.

Convened by the African Union Commission in collaboration with the Global Water Partnership Africa Coordination Unit (ACU), UNDP Africa, GIZ, and GEF IW: LEARN, the event will be held from 17 to 18th February 2026 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. the dialogue seek to advance cooperation, investment and climate-resilient solutions for Africa’s transboundary water resources.

This consultation is part of the Africa Transboundary Dialogue and Basin Action (ATDBA) programme – a five-year initiative designed to accelerate practical and inclusive action across borders.

🌊Water elevated in Africa. Leadership activated at the highest political level: At the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly, H.E. Moses Vilakati , AU Commisioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment (ARBE), announced the 2026 AU Theme of the Year: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”

👉🏽With this decision, water and sanitation are elevated to the highest political level – recognised as strategic foundations for Africa’s prosperity, resilience and peace.
As the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), we stand ready to support Member States in translating this political priority into measurable implementation.
Tomorrow, the Africa Water Vision 2063 & Policy will be formally launched – advancing the shift from political commitment to coordinated action.

(EN/FR) From Vision to Action: Ministers Agree on Next Steps for Africa’s Water Future 💧

Following the adoption of the at the 14th General Assembly in Dakar, Ministers have issued a communiqué on 🔑 key decisions taken:
✅ Approval of AMCOW’s Strategic Operational Plan (2026–2030), Business Plan, and Triennial Work Programme & Budget.
✅ Launch of the Groundwater Strategic Programme (2026–2033) to secure Africa’s hidden lifeline.
✅ Commitment to convene an International Conference on Financing the Vision in 2026.
✅ Mobilisation for endorsement at the AU Summit 2026 – positioning the Vision as Africa’s common stance and input for the UN 2026 Water Conference.

📜 Ministers also confirmed that the Vision embeds water security and sanitation in national plans and budgets – so action starts now, not later.

💡 The communiqué reflects more than a policy moment: it is Africa’s collective compass, turning commitments into action, and charting a united path to prosperity, resilience, and peace through water.

Suite à l’adoption de la lors de la 14e Assemblée Générale de l’ à Dakar, les ministres ont émis un communiqué sur les décisions 🔑 clés prises :

✅ Approbation du Plan Stratégique Opérationnel d’AMCOW (2026–2030), du Business Plan et du Programme de Travail & Budget Triennaux.
✅ Lancement du Programme Stratégique pour les Ressources en Eau Souterraine (2026–2033) afin de sécuriser la source de vie cachée de l’Afrique.
✅ Engagement à organiser une Conférence Internationale sur le Financement de la Vision en 2026.
✅ Mobilisation pour l’approbation lors du Sommet de l’UA en 2026 – positionner la Vision et la Politique comme l’approche commune de l’Afrique et contribution à la Conférence de l’ONU sur l’eau en 2026.

📜 Les ministres ont également confirmé que la Vision intègre la sécurité hydrique et l’assainissement dans la planification économique nationale et les processus budgétaires — l’action commence dès maintenant, pas plus t**d.

💡 Le communiqué reflète plus qu’un moment de politique : c’est la boussole collective de l’Afrique, transformant les engagements en actions, et traçant une voie unie vers la prospérité, la résilience et la paix par l’eau.

At the 14th AMCOW General Assembly, African Ministers adopted the Africa Water Vision 2063 and Policy – a bold roadmap to place water and sanitation at the heart of Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want.
This Vision and Policy will serve as Africa’s continental implementation plan of Agenda 2063 on the priority area of water security and sanitation; and as our common position and input to the UN 2026 Water Conference.

Key commitments include:
✅ Adoption of the AMCOW Strategic Operational Plan (2026–2030), Business Plan (2026-2030), and Groundwater Programme.
✅ Increased Member State contributions to ensure ownership and sustainability.
✅ Mobilisation for endorsement of the Vision and Policy at the 39th AU Summit in 2026

The Africa Water Vision 2063 and Policy is more than a plan – it is a call to action for prosperity, integration, and resilience through water and sanitation. Together, we are building a water secure and resilient Africa with safe sanitation for all.

(FR)💧L’avenir de l’eau en Afrique prend son envol !

À l’occasion de la 14ᵉ Assemblée générale de l’AMCOW, les ministres africains ont adopté la Vision et la Politique africaines de l’eau à l’horizon 2063, une feuille de route ambitieuse qui place l’eau et l’assainissement au cœur de l’Agenda 2063 : L’Afrique que nous voulons.

Cette Vision et cette Politique serviront de plan de mise en œuvre continental de l’Agenda 2063 dans le domaine prioritaire de la sécurité de l’eau et de l’assainissement, ainsi que de position commune et de contribution de l’Afrique à la Conférence des Nations unies sur l’eau de 2026.

Principaux engagements :
✅ Adoption du Plan opérationnel stratégique de l’AMCOW (2026-2030), du Business plan (2026-2030) et du Programme sur les eaux souterraines.
✅ Augmentation des contributions des États membres en vue de renforcer l’appropriation et la pérennité.
✅ Mobilisation en vue de l’adoption de la Vision et de la Politique lors du 39ᵉ Sommet de l’Union africaine en 2026.

La Vision et la Politique africaines de l’eau 2063 ne sont pas qu’un simple plan : elles constituent un appel à l’action pour la prospérité, l’intégration et la résilience grâce à l’eau et à l’assainissement.

Ensemble, construisons une Afrique résiliente et en sécurité hydrique, avec un assainissement durable pour tous.
