Education Commissioner Backs Health Ministry’s Push for Routine Immunization in Anambra Schools

By Obiageli Nwankwo

The Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, has pledged the ministry’s full support for the state-wide campaign on routine immunization and measles–rubella vaccination across schools.

Prof. Chuma-Udeh gave the assurance during a courtesy visit to her office at the State Secretariat Complex ,Awka by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, and his team, who highlighted major challenges affecting immunization, particularly the lack of access to many private schools and their refusal to allow health officials to vaccinate pupils.

Responding, the Education Commissioner approved immediate collaboration between both ministries, stating that her office would issue an official circular granting the health team access to all schools for immunization, provided parental consent is obtained.

She further urged the health officials to intensify sensitization campaigns to counter negative perceptions about immunization. According to her, society continues to battle “backward and retrogressive mindsets” that hinder children from receiving the full benefits of vaccines, thereby exposing them to preventable childhood diseases.

Earlier, Dr. Obidike explained that resistance from schools—especially private institutions—remains a significant obstacle to the state’s routine immunization and measles–rubella vaccination efforts. He appealed to the Education Ministry to intervene and ensure compliance.

The visit concluded with renewed commitment from both ministries to strengthen cooperation and improve immunization coverage for school children across Anambra State.

Education Commissioner Urges NAWOJ to Uphold Media’s Watchdog Role

By Obiageli Nwankwo

The Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, has charged members of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Anambra State Chapter, to uphold the media’s constitutional responsibility as the watchdog of society.

Prof. Chuma-Udeh gave the charge while addressing NAWOJ members at the Godwin Ezemo International Press Centre, Awka, during activities marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

She warned that failure of the media to uphold professional ethics through unbiased and accurate reportage poses a serious threat to societal development.

According to her, the media remains the voice of the voiceless, a beacon of hope for the oppressed and a critical force for holding leaders and institutions accountable.

Speaking on the fight against gender-based violence, the Commissioner noted that the media plays a pivotal role in public sensitisation and awareness creation on the dangers of GBV, as well as in promoting the protection and rights of women and the girl child.

She urged journalists to remain steadfast in exposing injustice and advancing social change through responsible and credible reporting.

Earlier in her opening remarks, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Anambra State, Comrade Tochukwu Ifejirika, said the association had resolved to take a bold stand against gender-based violence by driving awareness and advocacy.

“Today, NAWOJ, as an influential body of women in the media, has taken it upon itself to change the narrative by taking a bold stand against gender-based violence, believing that awareness leads to advocacy and advocacy leads to a mental shift,” she said.

She added that NAWOJ was united in its resolve to confront, challenge and ultimately end all forms of gender-based violence.

Also speaking, the Chairperson of the Organising Committee of this year’s 16 days of activism against gender base violence,Comrade Obiageli Arinze, said the campaign, tagged “Unite to End Digital Violence Against Women and Girls,” was designed to educate, inspire and empower participants.

She explained that the programme featured experts, survivors, advocates and other key stakeholders whose experiences and insights would deepen public understanding of the menace.

Arinze noted the attendance at the event was a clear statement of resolve by stakeholders to refuse silence in the face of the rising trend of gender-based violence.

She stressed that NAWOJ remained committed to building a society where safety and dignity are guaranteed for everyone, irrespective of gender.

According to her, GBV affects families, communities and the very fabric of society, making collective action both necessary and urgent.

She expressed optimism that the lessons from the engagement would translate into stronger advocacy beyond the event venue by all stakeholders.

From Amawbia to Aroma Junction: NAWOJ Takes a Stand Against Gender Base Violence

By Obiageli Nwankwo

The Anambra State Chapter of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has taken a bold stand against rising cases of gender-based violence (GBV), marking the 16 Days of Activism with a symbolic walk from the State Police Command Headquarters in Awka through Eke Awka Market to Aroma Junction.

During the lecture delivered as part of the activity marking the event, key stakeholders called for stronger parenting, women’s empowerment, and public accountability to curb abuse against women and girls.

Speaking at the Police Command Headquarters in Amawbia, Chief Public Safety Officer and Officer-in-Charge of Gender Issues, CPS Elozie Adaobi, urged parents to prioritize the moral and emotional upbringing of their children. “Poor parental care and weak upbringing are major drivers of gender-based violence,” she warned.

Many parents are sacrificing the future of their children for business and material pursuits. Any enterprise that takes away proper care and training of children opens the door to future sorrow, she added.

Amara Muojeke,Esq President of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), stressed that women should reject total dependence on men, citing existing laws that protect women from abuse and prescribe jail terms for offenders.

No woman should be idle or solely dependent on her husband for survival. Economic empowerment gives women a voice and protection. Any man who forces his wife to remain a housewife against her will risks imprisonment if reported,”she disclosed

Ambassador Anulika Adibe, a survivor of early marriage and domestic violence, advised parents not to push young girls into early marriage and encouraged victims to speak out or leave violent relationships.

Many women, she said remain in abusive marriages out of fear of public opinion,a mindset she described as a major contributor to the increase in GBV cases

On his part, Mr Chinedu Okwelugo,a retired Director of Planning and Research ,National Orientation Agency (NOA) emphasized that teaching children gender equality from an early age is essential to building a society free of GBV.

He urged parents to inculcate in their children the principle of gender equality, noting that no family chore is exclusively for any gender.

According to him, "children trained with the mindset of equality grow into balanced men and women with healthy views about life and relationship," he maintained.

The awareness walk also aimed to educate women and girls on avenues for seeking help and justice, sending a clear message that GBV will not be tolerated in Anambra State.

Soludo’s Education Drive Gets Community Boost as Govt Takes Over Akpulu London School

By Obiageli Nwankwo

The Public Private Community Partnership (PPCP) Initiative has recorded another milestone as the Anambra State Government has officially taken over Akpulu London Community Nursery and Primary School in Ugbenu, Awka North Local Government Area.

The handover ceremony, held on the school premises, had the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Ifeoma Agbaizu. She commended the Akpulu London community for the vision and commitment displayed in establishing and sustaining the school before handing it over to government.

Prof. Chuma-Udeh described the school as a testament to the unity within the community, noting that such a project can only stand where peace and collective effort exist.

She also emphasized the urgent need for a perimeter fence to prevent further encroachment on school land, revealing that the Ministry currently handles over 250 encroachment cases across the state.

The Commissioner assured the community that with the official handover, the school is now fully eligible to register pupils for Common Entrance and First School Leaving Certificate examinations.
She added that the school would also benefit from government interventions available to public schools.

In her remarks, the Chairman of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Dr. Vera Nwadinobi, represented by the Executive Secretary, Mrs. Loveline Mgbemena, expressed delight at the community’s achievement.
She pledged that qualified teachers would be deployed to the school, stressing that the takeover does not exclude community involvement. According to her, government and community collaboration remains key to raising the school to the desired standard.

Earlier in his address, the Chairman of Akpulu London Village General Assembly, Chief Uwabunkeonye, congratulated Governor Chukwuma Soludo on his re-election, describing it as a confirmation that his developmental strides are widely felt. He expressed hope that the governor’s second tenure would usher in greater progress for the state.

Chief Uwabunkeonye thanked the government for approving the community’s handover request, noting that the school was born out of a shared dream to ensure that every child in Akpulu and the wider Ugbenu community has access to quality, equitable, and sustainable education. The school, he added, has also reduced the stress of pupils who previously trekked long distances to the nearest government primary school.

Highlights of the ceremony included the presentation of official documents to the government and the ceremonial cutting of the tape, marking the school’s transition into a fully recognized public institution.

Since Governor Chukwuma Soludo introduced the free education policy in Anambra State, there has been a noticeable increase in communities handing over schools to the government, further strengthening the administration’s commitment to making education accessible to every school-aged child.

Nwanyibuife: NAWOJ Anambra Celebrates Girl Child Day, Urges Girls to Believe in Their Worth

By Obiageli Nwankwo

The Anambra State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) joined the world in celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child, with a strong message of empowerment captured in the Igbo phrase “Nwanyibuife,” meaning “a woman is of value.”

The event, held at the Ezemo International Press Centre in Awka, drew students from girls’ secondary schools across Awka and neighbouring towns. It featured motivational talks from prominent women who encouraged young girls to embrace confidence, pursue education, and aspire to greatness.

Prof. Stella Okunna, the first female Professor of Mass Communication in sub-Saharan Africa and chairperson of the event, urged the girls to take pride in their identity and never consider themselves inferior to their male counterparts.

“You must have the mindset that you are not less than anyone. Women have something unique to offer the world. Build your confidence and know your worth,” she said.

In her speech titled “Grooming the Girl Child for All-Round Development,”Rt Hon.Beverly Ikpeazu -Nkemdichie Commissioner for Special Duties, emphasized that grooming the girl child requires deliberate and continuous efforts from both parents and teachers. She advised girls to focus on their goals and work hard to achieve success through honesty and determination.

“Successful women are those who worked hard, not those of easy virtue. Marriage is good, but it should not define your worth. Married or not, you have a voice—stay focused and pursue your dreams,” she stated.

Hon. Ikpeazu also urged teachers to collaborate with parents in monitoring and supporting students, noting that teachers often identify when a child is struggling. She encouraged the girls to speak up when facing difficulties and seek guidance from trusted adults or mentors.

Prof. Nkechi Ikedingwu, Chairman of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, delivered a paper titled “Career Guide for a Promising Future for Leadership Roles.” She advised students to set clear goals for their future and pursue education with dedication.

“Education gives you the power to rise above limitations and the voice to be heard. Through learning and skill acquisition, you can make a difference and lead positive change,” she said.

Earlier, NAWOJ Chairperson Comrade Tochukwu Ifejika appealed to parents, teachers, media, and other stakeholders to uphold the rights of the girl child and promote her role in leadership.

The event also featured short drama presentations by schools, as well as the distribution of cash gifts and exercise books to students. Some of the schools represented included Community Secondary School, Okpuno; Old City College, Agu-Awka; Capital City Secondary School, Awka; and Community Secondary School, Umuokpu.

The celebration concluded with a resounding message to every girl: Nwanyibuife—the girl child is valuable, capable, and destined to shine.

The celebration reaffirmed NAWOJ’s commitment to promoting the rights, education, and empowerment of the girl child — a vision that aligns with the message echoed throughout the event: Nwanyibuife — the woman is indeed of value.

In her remarks, AANFE Director,Mrs. Ebele Ononihu, expressed appreciation to Governor Soludo and the Ministry of Education for creating an enabling environment for adult literacy and non-formal education to thrive in Anambra.

Governor Soludo’s Free Education Policy Builds Inclusive, Innovative School System in Anambra - Commissioner for Education

By Obiageli Nwankwo

Anambra State’s education system under Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has been described as detribalised, inclusive, and transformative, offering free education to both indigenes and non-indigenes alike.

Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, stated this in her office at the State Secretariat, Awka, while reviewing achievements in the state’s education sector.

She said that the state’s free education policy reflects Governor Soludo’s commitment to equal opportunity and quality learning for all children, regardless of their origin.

According to her, the impact of the policy is already evident in the influx of students from neighbouring states seeking to benefit from the state’s innovative educational reforms.

Prof. Chuma-Udeh highlighted that the Soludo administration has ended the era of “classrooms without teachers” by recruiting over 8,150 teachers within months of assuming office in 2022. She noted that the governor’s vision of producing skilled and globally competitive students has given rise to the Smart School Initiative.

Under this initiative, 21 public schools, one in each local government area, are currently being upgraded to smart schools in the first phase, with others to follow. Teachers across the state are also being trained to effectively use digital and smart teaching tools.

The Commissioner further revealed that Governor Soludo’s inclusive approach extends to special needs education. Schools for children with disabilities in Odoakpu, Umuchu, and Isulo have been equipped with braille materials, talking computers, massage equipment, wheelchairs, and walking aids. Their monthly allocations, she said, are paid promptly and conscientiously.

Speaking on the state’s recent achievements, Prof. Chuma-Udeh disclosed that Anambra won nine out of fifteen national education awards, including the Best Public Primary School in Nigeria, clinched by Woliwo Primary School, Onitsha, at the President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence Award in Abuja.

She emphasized that effective quality control and supervision are maintained through agencies like the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) and the Post Primary Schools Service Commission (PPSSC). The Ministry, she added, also encourages community participation through the “If You See Something, Say Something” initiative to report and address any misconduct or irregularities in schools.

Highlighting further strides, she announced that plans are underway to establish 27 new community schools across communities lacking educational facilities. The administration is also revamping dilapidated infrastructure, with schools such as Urban Girls Secondary School, Fegge, and Uga Boys Secondary School already benefiting from massive renovation projects.

Prof. Chuma-Udeh concluded that Governor Soludo has achieved in three and a half years what no administration has accomplished in over three decades in the state’s education sector — a feat that has earned him overwhelming support from parents and teachers for a second term in office.
