LESSONS FROM THE RISE OF APGA

Thirteen years ago, in 2002, The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) was formed, as a puritanical political party for unblemished and purpose – driven Progressive Politicians. The beginning was very humble and the fear of political watchers was whether the party would remain committed to its ideals and shun the overtures of the hawks and vultures of Nigerian politics. It was not easy for the party because when the birds of destruction descended, it was stretched to a near-snapping limit, to fight the battle of its young life.

If it had lost that battle, it would have been nunc dimitis. The party would have been taken over by questionable money-bags, “Kick-backing” contractors and the “bad men” and “dream killers” of every good Nigerian dream. If APGA had lost that battle, its destiny may have become wasted like many others before it and its soul may now be resting in pieces like the troubled souls of other Political Parties which were so sadly sacrificed on the corrupt altar of individualism. All those troubled parties had at one time or the other reincarnated into more troubled destinies. APGA refused and rejected such reincarnation.

If it had lost the battle for its life, probably, it may have suffered worse fate than the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has been struck by a strange hormonal dysfunction, which causes sixteen year olds to reverse to breast-feeding and sucking feeders. The disease is so strange that long after its victim dies, the victim still breathes, oscillating in the valley of confusion. The victim is neither dead nor alive. APGA saved itself this nightmarish condition when it worked hard to win its battles.

However, it wasn’t enough for the party to win the battles. It must survive the victory it won. The party fought hard again. From the rubbles of its victory sprang fresh agitations, litigations and spurious attacks. Not few people believed that the party would go under. Surprisingly and against permutations, the party survived and continued to wax stronger. Shortly before the 2015 general elections, it was dealt what many believed was a final uppercut, when its BOT chairman and former governor of Anambra State dumped the party for the PDP, after eight years using the party’s platform to govern the state.

Obi’s departure from the party seemed to be the tonic the party needed to re-discover its rhythm. It does appear to political watchers that long before his departure Obi had stopped working for the growth and expansion of APGA and had become fully involved in the activities of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In reality, at the time the former governor officially joined PDP, he had become more of a liability than an asset to APGA and that was why the party posted its best electoral outing since its existence in the 2015 general elections, just shortly after Obi’s departure. APGA has yet won another battle and rather than shrinking, the party has continued to rise and rise.

In the just concluded general elections the party won 11 House of Assembly seats in Abia State, 27 in Anambra, 2 in Bayelsa and 1 in Taraba. The Party also won 2 House of Representatives seats in Anambra, one each in Abia and Taraba states. Speaking in a recent Sun Newspaper interview, the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Victor Oye was confident that more victory would come the way of the party by the time the Tribunals round off because the party’s mandates in many state were stolen.

As it stands now, the party has commanding influence in many states now, unlike before. In Bayelsa and Kogi States where governorship elections are already scheduled for this year, the momentum of APGA’s political in-roads is giving other political parties sleepless nights. APGA appears to be the party to beat right now and officials of the party are leveraging on this momentum.

Rather than sleepless nights, other parties should be taking crucial lessons from the repositioning and rejuvenation of APGA. The first lesson to learn from the APGA miracle is the dire need for political parties to remain focused, committed to their ideals and shun buck-passing. In the said interview mentioned above, Dr. Oye said; “- - We met a very strong and focused party and we are going to consolidate and build new platforms to further relationship within the party.” He didn’t seize the opportunity to upbraid the former Exco of the party or tell the story of how he is struggling to re-build a party destroyed by his predecessors. Lesson No 1 – don’t pass the buck and don’t pull others down because others gave their known best for the general good and have their own supporters. You need these supporters as friends and not enemies.

Other political parties should also learn from APGA how to handle intra-party squabbles, without ripping the party apart. Commenting on the party’s relationship with ex-governor Obi, the APGA National Chairman enthused, “Obi is our brother and also our friend, and we love him. He thought that Jonathan was going to win the second time, and which was the calculation of many people. So, there was nothing wrong in what he did. That is how I see it.” Well said and absolutely dynamic. Lesson No 2 – don’t be holier than thou. Never shut the door. Always keep it open. You will be surprised at how many unlikely people would come back through that door.

This may explain why traffic into APGA has become high. It may also explain why internal democracy thrives in the party and party members are allowed to express their convictions without fear of sanctions. Another great attribute of the party is its penchant for total disclosure and honesty at it. On Igbo block vote for President Jonathan, the Party is of the opinion that the Igbos erred. The party was not cowardly in indicting itself because Jonathan was also the party’s candidate in the election. The party chairman went further to say, “the biggest mistake APGA made in 2015 was not to have fielded a candidate and that candidate would have succeeded in unifying the South East and other parts of the country, but because they did not calculate properly, we are suffering the consequences”. Lesson No 3 – Never grandstand. Always keep it clean and honest even when you are wrong. Your honesty will win you sympathizers.

APGA’s honesty is already winning supporters in Kogi State. The party has remained committed to its ideals and has refused to pander to bandwagon practice. Though it is now the trend for individuals to dictate the tune for their parties, APGA still dictates its own tunes and also compels its members to dance to it. This is called party discipline, which makes the party’s positions superior to the interests of its members. APGA is the only party that can lay claim to party discipline and party superiority. The party always ensures that the field is level for all players and this inspires members’ confidence in the party.

It does not select a candidate and force him or her upon members. It allows its members to choose who they want to vote for. In the run-up to the Kogi election, hear Dr. Oye again, “we are going to bring forth a candidate that has integrity, that has the clout, a candidate that has popularity and is acceptable to the people.” This is lesson No 4 – Never take the people for granted. They can make or mar the party because the power that the party seeks is in the hands of the people.”

These and many more reasons that cannot fit into one write-up are some of the reasons behind the rise and rise of APGA.

As the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) holds its national convention on Saturday in Awka its stakeholders have predicted that the party will come out stronger.

Some stakeholders said, on Friday, that the party would elect new national and state officers at the convention slated for the Women Development Centre, Awka.

The Governor’s Special Adviser, Political Matters, Mr Chinedu Obidigwe, said the convention would showcase to the world that APGA was a party that blazes the trail in internal democracy.

Obidigwe said the state government was glad for the privilege to host the party’s national convention in Awka.

He said plans were already in place for unfettered free and fair polls among members aspiring for the various positions in the party’s hierarchy.

The special adviser enjoined members to keep faith with the party as APGA was determined to provide good governance in every area of its influence.

Chief Mike Kwentoh, who just stepped down as Anambra Chairman of the party, said he looked forward to the moment of transition at the convention.

Kwentoh said he was sure that the convention committee would conduct the process according to the provisions of the party’s constitution for credible leadership to emerge at the various levels.

He said that he was leaving the party leadership in Anambra stronger than when he assumed office, and expressed the optimism that the incoming leadership would surpass the performance of his team.

Chief Nobert Obi, waiting to be formally inaugurated as Anambra Chairman of the party at the convention, eulogised the party leadership both at the national and state levels.

Obi expressed confidence that the convention would usher in a new era for the party.

He said that APGA had a bright future which the new leadership would help to realise, adding that the convention would go smoothly.

“We are ready for that national convention here in Awka, it is our hope that it will be successful.

“The leadership of the party at both the national and state levels have done marvelously well in holding the party together in times of serious turbulence.

“We appreciate them and hopefully the incoming leadership will surely equal or surpass them.

“For those who think they want to move to other political parties, we advise that they should exercise caution, APGA is a great party and APGA is still the best place to be,’’ Obi said.

Chief Victor Umeh-led national leadership two term tenure elapses on June 10.

Resurgent APGA Holds Transparent, Peaceful Congress in Anambra

The inspirational and result-oriented leadership of the BoT Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, which has seen the party evolve, and grow in leaps and bounds with resounding victories by its candidates in the recent general elections both in Anambra and some parts of Nigeria, manifested at the conduct of a transparent and peaceful State Congress of the party Saturday at the Women Development Centre Awka.

The Congress which started May 16th at the Ward level across the State, and the Local Government Areas two days later, culminated in the election of new executives at the three levels with Sir Norbert Obi, former Commissioner for Special Duties in the state, emerging as the new State Chairman of APGA after eight years. 27 others were also elected into various positions along-side the new State party Chairman during the Congress seen by many of the delegates as the most peaceful since the inception of the party.

Addressing the Congress, the National Chairman of APGA , Chief Victor Umeh, who was represented by the State Chairman of the Party, Chief Mike Kwentoh said that APGA is a political movement founded on the principles of equity, justice and transparency and had since its inception, weathered many storms to get to the enviable height it is presently. Attributing the successes the Party has achieved to the collective support of the government and people of Anambra state, Chief Kwento maintained that the Party is moving at a rapid pace towards becoming the next opposition Party in the Country as evident in the landmarks it recorded during the last general elections.

Chief Kwentoh informed the Congress that his executive constituted the APGA State Congress Committee with Mr. Ifeatu Onejeme as Chairman and charged them with the responsibility of conducting a transparent election for the new executives. Kwentoh also advised the new party officers that “to lead you must be ready to be a ‘dust-bin’ where the good and the bad will dump. It is important that we bond together because we are one indivisible APGA.”

The Chairman of the State Congress Committee, Mr. Ifeatu Onejeme said that the Committee is relying on Article 9, sub-section 5 of the APGA Constitution to conduct the elections with 1139 duly accredited Delegates. He explained the processes and assured that due process was followed to ensure the emergence of credible leadership for the party at all levels.

Mr. Onejeme, stated that the election has become necessary to fill the void created by the outgoing State Executive as well as to further strengthen internal democracy and guarantee continuity in the Party. He commended the outgoing Executives for their doggedness in effectively administering the affairs of the party for the past eight years. He noted that the new order of peace and intensified struggle towards the people's emancipation which the Congress was designed to usher in would ensure that the Party lives up to its motto "be your brothers and sisters keeper."

In his acceptance Speech on behalf of the new APGA executive, the State Chairman, Sir Norbert Obi, promised to run an all-inclusive administration with an open-door policy akin to the style which has earned governor Obiano, the admiration of Ndi Anambra. According to Sir Obi;

“We welcome new ideas and constructive criticisms for the progress of our party. Therefore we invite you all to continue to contribute your quota towards the building of a stronger and more viable APGA. This party moves forward because of you. It moves forward because you re-affirm the spirit of the founding fathers of this great party, the APGA spirit that has lifted this state from the depths of despair to the heights of hope, the belief that while each of us will pursue our own individual dreams we are an APGA family (Onye aghana nwanne ya) and we rise and fall together as one APGA family and as one people.”

The new Chairman also on behalf of the executive promised to uphold and justify the confidence reposed in them by the party men and women. He expressed gratitude to the National Leader and BoT Chairman of APGA, Governor Willie Obiano for showing in concrete terms within a short period, his genuine resolve to make the Party great, adding that the dividends of his developmental strides has continued to attracted interests towards the Party. He promised to operate an all-inclusive and open door system of administration and to pursue that will ensure that APGA remains one big indivisible family.

Commenting on the outcome of the Congress, Member-Elect for Idemili North State Constituency, Chief Francis Nmegbuanaeze, said that it was a very peaceful exercise devoid of rancor. He acknowledged that with the consolidation process currently ongoing in the Party and with the support of Governor Obiano, APGA is poised to make further in-roads into other States of the South-East and across the Federation.

The Congress attracted top state government functionaries, all political office holders in the state elected on the platform of APGA, party Chieftains and supporters with representatives of INEC as observers.

Members of the new APGA State Executive Committee who were elected unanimously by voice vote are expected to be sworn into office on the 10th of next Month when the subsisting tenure of the present party executives will expire.

Obiano Turns attention to Poultry, Attracts $61m Investments

The governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has expanded the scope of his efforts to turn Anambra State into a model agricultural state, attracting $61m investments into commercial poultry farming in the state.

Signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lynden Integrated Farms Limited in the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia, Tuesday, for the establishment of a modern poultry production and processing farm in the state, Governor Obiano emphasized that Agriculture remains the number one pillar in his economic agenda.

According to him, the proposed ultra-modern poultry farm which will be located on seven hectares of land in Igbariam will generate 250 jobs during construction and 200 permanent jobs as well as 2000 indirect jobs subsequently.

Speaking further on the plans of his administration to alter the agricultural landscape of the South East, Governor Obiano observed that, “at the moment all the day-old chicks sold in the South East are brought in from Oyo state. We want to change that. We want all the day-old chicks sold in this area to come from Anambra State.”

He further explained that his plan is to approach agriculture in two areas – create a favourable and sustainable environment for commercial agriculture to thrive and to roll out programmes that will upgrade the class of machete and hoes wielding farmers to adapt to the use of new implements and improved seedlings. “We have mapped out specific areas where cassava, rice and maize will best and established cooperatives in those specific areas. We plan to play to our full strength in agriculture,” the governor assured.

Earlier in his introductory remarks, the Chairman of Lynden Integrated Farms Limited, Mr. Clem Nwogbo had explained that his company plans to develop a two-phased modern integrated poultry production and processing farm with day-old chicks and then subsequently upgrade its facilities in order to provide high quality meat, eggs from layers and fresh and frozen poultry meat from broilers.

“The first phase of this facility will comprise the setting up of 200,000 broiler houses with 8 pens, 93,000 layer house with 3 pens, 33,000 pullets house with 1 pen, 2000 birds per house slaughter house and a feed mill. We plan to double the production capacity of this farm by extending the broiler and layer houses to accommodate 400,000 broilers, 186,000 layers and 66,000 pullets after 3 years of full operation of the first phase,” Mr. Nwogbo further explained.

According to him, Lynden Integrated Farms Limited has the capacity to position Anambra state as the center of excellence in poultry farming in the South East and South South. Thanking Governor Obiano for creating the enabling environment that has encouraged investors to flock to Anambra State, Mr. Nwogbo explained that Lynden was committed to commissioning the facility 15 months after the turning of sod on the proposed site.

Mr. Nwogbo further revealed that the company plans to implement a robust CSR programme which will encourage the adoption of the best practices in poultry farming to small scale farmers, support educational initiatives in the host community and supply day-old chicks to farmers under and out-grower scheme.

Earlier, the Chairman, Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency, and Traditional Ruler of Umuoji, Igwe Cyril Enwezor explained that the equity ratio of the company is 90% for the investing Company, 6% for the state government and 4% for the host community.
