BARR. WASHINGTON OSIFO RESUMES OFFICE AS COMMISSIONER FOR EDUCATION

The Ministry of Education was in a celebratory mood on Wednesday as it gave Barr. Washington Osifo a rousing welcome on his official resumption as Commissioner for Education, following his swearing-in by the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, at the Commissioner's Office in Benin City.

The event began with the introduction of the Permanent Secretary, Sir Enodolomwanyi Otamere, and heads of the various departments, who briefed the Commissioner on their respective functions.

In his address, Barr. Osifo first thanked the Executive Governor for the opportunity to serve. Quoting the Governor, he said: _“I appeal to you to help us.”_ He also commended the leadership of the Ministry under the Permanent Secretary, Sir Enodolomwanyi Otamere.

He then outlined his agenda for the sector, focusing on three key areas: eradicating examination malpractice, human capital development, and correcting the anomaly of junior officers supervising senior officers in schools.

On examination malpractice, he stated: _“It is our mandate to ensure that this is tackled head-on.”_ He cited his previous record on the same issue during his earlier tenure as Commissioner.

Speaking on staff welfare and promotions, the Commissioner said: _“What is worth doing is worth doing well.”_ He pledged to reverse the current trend and restore trust and confidence in the promotion system.

He stressed that the priority of the Ministry must be the students and pupils of Edo State. _“Roads and buildings may wear out, but what is imparted into individuals by teachers will stand the test of time,”_ he said.

Barr. Osifo also pledged to run an open-door policy that rewards hard work and encourages deserving staff. He called for the cooperation of all staff to help deliver the SHINE Agenda of His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo.

After the meeting, the Permanent Secretary conducted the Commissioner on a tour of the various offices in the Ministry.

Edo Ministry of Education Holds Stakeholders’ Engagement on Learners’ Biometrics, Edo-Cert Showcase

The Edo State Ministry of Education has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening data collection and improving access to online digital certificate printing in both public and private schools across the state.

This was the focus of a stakeholders’ engagement meeting on the establishment of an Edo-designed comprehensive and verifiable biometric database, and the Edo-Cert platform. The meeting was held at the John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy, JOOPSA, Benin City.

The aim of the engagement was to provide the government with accurate and reliable learners’ data to support effective educational planning, policy implementation, efficient resource allocation, and improved service delivery. It also seeks to give learners, parents, and schools seamless access to online digital education certificates.

In his opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Sir Enodolomwanyi Otamere, welcomed all stakeholders and commended them for prioritizing the education of children in the state.

“As we all know, today we are demonstrating the importance of data management. Without data, no responsible government will be able to plan effectively,” he said.
He urged all participants to pay close attention to the demonstration by the ministry’s technical partners.

In his presentation, Mr. Uyi Briggs took participants through a slide presentation of Edo-Cert, beginning with the portal: http://edocert.edostate.gov.ng. He highlighted key features including the menu, tutorial video, and regional dashboard. Participants were also able to access the platform live on their phones.

During the second presentation, Mr. Olajide Kazeem took participants through the Learner Identification Number/Biometric system. He highlighted features such as login access, data capture, and biometric enrollment. He stressed that the biometric system will enable proper regulation and a reliable tracking mechanism for learners. He also emphasized its capacity to support timely and progressive promotion based on learners’ continuous assessment records.

The high point of the meeting was the question-and-answer session. Participants raised concerns around data accessibility and the need for private school proprietors to have sufficient access to leverage the platform. All grey areas were addressed to the satisfaction of stakeholders.

In his closing remarks, the Permanent Secretary thanked all stakeholders and reiterated the Ministry’s readiness to advance every initiative that will ensure the wellbeing and academic progress of every learner in Edo State.

Edo Ministry of Education Holds Stakeholders’ Engagement on Learners’ Biometrics

The Edo State Ministry of Education has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening adequate data collection in both public and private schools across the state.

This was the focus of a stakeholders’ engagement meeting on the establishment of an Edo-designed comprehensive and verifiable biometric database, held at the Ministry’s Conference Hall in Benin City.

The aim of the engagement was to provide government with accurate and reliable learners’ data to support effective educational planning, policy implementation, efficient resource allocation, and improved service delivery across the state.

In his opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Sir Enodolomwanyi Otamere, welcomed all stakeholders and thanked them for prioritizing the education of children in the state.

He announced that the Ministry of Education has developed a data dashboard to monitor every learner in the state. He stressed that the Ministry will issue access passwords to all schools for registration, and that no school should charge any student for it. He added that the system will help all stakeholders with effective data management.

During the presentation, Mr. Olajide Kazeem took participants through the features of the platform. He highlighted login access, data capturing, and biometric imprint, among others. He stressed that the biometric system will enable proper regulation and a reliable tracking mechanism. He also emphasized its capacity to support timely, progressive promotion based on learners’ continuous assessment records.

High point of the meeting was the question and answer session where participants raised concerns around data accessibility, and attempts by some school proprietors to circumvent the process. All grey areas were addressed and laid to rest.

The meeting concluded with the Permanent Secretary thanking all stakeholders and reiterating the Ministry’s readiness to advance all areas that will ensure the wellbeing of every learner in Edo State.

Ps Pledged to Strengthen Mathematics Teaching, Learning in Edo State

The Permanent Secretary, Edo State Ministry of Education reaffirm his commitment to strengthens mathematics teaching in Edo state as he received members of the Mathematics Association of Nigeria, Edo State Chapter, at his office in the Ministry’s premises in Benin City.

The purpose of the visit was to congratulate the Permanent Secretary on his assumption of office and to seek collaboration with the Ministry on mathematics education initiatives in the State.

In his presentation, the Chairman of the Association, Mr. Anthony Agbons Ogbomo-Law, congratulated Sir Otamere on his appointment. He also commended the Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his commitment to the development of the education sector in the State.

Mr. Agbons reeled out the Association’s activities for 2026, which include a Capacity Building Seminar/Workshop for mathematics teachers and the Mathematics Olympiad/Competition to be held in two stages: Local Government Area and State levels.

He further presented to the Permanent Secretary the final list of students selected to represent Edo State at the National Mathematics Quiz Competition scheduled to hold in Osun State on August 30, 2026. He appealed to the Ministry for support, specifically in the area of transportation, to enable the safe movement of the students to and from the competition venue.

Responding, the Permanent Secretary, Sir Enodolomwanyi Otamere, thanked the Association for the courtesy visit. He expressed appreciation for their efforts in driving capacity building for students and pupils across Edo State.

“Mathematics as a subject is very vital and must be encouraged and supported,” he said.

Sir Otamere informed the delegation of the Governor’s approval for the procurement of a Mobile Science Laboratory to boost science teaching across the State.

He commended MAN for its capacity-building drive and pledged the Ministry’s support for its programmes. He encouraged the Association to keep the Ministry informed of all its activities in order to access necessary support when needed.

To support the Association’s participation in the upcoming competition in Osun State, the Permanent Secretary pledged to make available an 18-seater bus for the transportation of the team.

The high point of the meeting was the presentation of a branded Mathematics Association of Nigeria T-shirt to the Permanent Secretary.
