The Management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, led by the Chief Medical Director, Professor Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, today Friday, 10 July 2026, received Dr. Abiodun Azeez, a Utah-based neurosurgeon with the Department of Neurosurgery, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, United States, during a courtesy visit to the hospital.

The visit provided an opportunity for Dr. Azeez to express his appreciation to the institution for its contribution to his professional development while engaging the hospital’s leadership on potential areas of collaboration. Discussions centred on opportunities to strengthen specialist healthcare delivery through partnerships in clinical practice, medical education, research, capacity building, mentorship, and knowledge exchange.

Welcoming the visiting team, the CMD, Prof. Idia N. Ize-Iyamu expressed her appreciation for the visit and commended Dr. Azeez for his commitment to giving back to the institution that contributed to his professional journey. She noted that collaborations of this nature hold immense potential for advancing specialist healthcare services, strengthening medical education and research, building local capacity, and improving patient outcomes. She further reaffirmed UBTH’s commitment to fostering strategic partnerships that promote innovation, excellence, and sustainable improvements in healthcare delivery for the benefit of patients and the wider community.

Dr. Azeez expressed his appreciation for the warm reception and reiterated his desire to support the hospital through collaborative initiatives.

Prof. Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, Chief Medical Director, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), will deliver the Keynote Address at the 18th Annual Scientific Conference and 8th Alumni Guest Lecture of the Faculty of Dental Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Lagos.

The conference, themed “Creating the Perfect Smile: Modern Possibilities in Tooth Alignment,” will hold on Thursday, 9th July 2026, at the Old Great Hall, College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL), Idi-Araba, Lagos, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Prof. Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, the first female Chief Medical Director of UBTH and a distinguished orthodontist, will deliver the keynote address, bringing her wealth of experience in clinical excellence, dental education, healthcare leadership, and orthodontic practice to this important scientific gathering.

Her participation underscores UBTH’s continued commitment to advancing medical and dental scholarship, strengthening institutional collaboration, and promoting innovation in healthcare delivery across Nigeria.

UBTH honours Prof. Kingsley Akhigbe on Retirement

The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, on Monday, July 6th, 2026, honoured Prof. Kingsley Oalei Akhigbe, the Chairman of the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee and a valued member of the mental health department, on the occasion of his retirement after years of dedicated service.

Prof. Ize-Iyamu praised Prof. Akhigbe for his outstanding leadership and exemplary qualities throughout his sojourn, noting that the hospital would significantly miss his extensive experience and invaluable contributions to UBTH.

During a brief ceremony attended by UBTH management staff, the CMD highlighted Prof. Akhigbe’s vast knowledge, wishing him success in his future endeavors.

The retirement celebration also coincided with his 70th birthday, during which the CMD presented him with a plaque to commemorate both milestones as he transitions from his role at the hospital.

In his remarks, Prof. Kingsley Akhigbe, a professor of psychiatry, expressed gratitude to the management of UBTH for their support and the opportunity to serve as a staff member for the past 40 years.

The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, on Wednesday, July 1st, 2026, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Ahonaruogho Family for their generous donation of a state-of-the-art library and lounge facility dedicated to the Geriatrics Ward, named in honor of Pa. Jeremiah Olu Oma Ahonaruogho of blessed memory.

Speaking during the commissioning of the library and lounge, Prof. Ize-Iyamu highlighted the significance of the contribution, stating that it represents more than just a physical space.

The CMD added that the donation embodies the institution's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for older persons, just as she emphasized that caring for the elderly extends beyond medical treatment to include an environment that fosters comfort, dignity, relaxation, social interaction, and meaningful engagement.

Prof. Ize-Iyamu reiterated UBTH's deep appreciation for the Ahonaruogho Family's support, which she noted will undoubtedly make a lasting impact on the lives of the elderly patients.

While urging well-meaning individuals to emulate the Ahonaruogho Family, led by Prince (Dr.) Richard Oma Ahonaruogho (SAN), Prof. Ize-Iyamu added that," We have put in place opportunities for other well meaning individuals to build a legacy of healing by adopting a ward/ facility; an initiative that will encourage you to partner with us to transform healthcare one facility at a time. Please join us to make it happen."

She said the UBTH community was full of gratitude, honour, and reflection adding that, "We are gathered here not merely to unveil a facility, but to celebrate a life defined by values that inspire us: integrity, excellence, discipline, and service.

"The Geriatrics Library and Lounge provides a welcoming setting where elderly patients can experience moments of connection, companionship, and wellbeing as part of their healthcare journey. It represents a more compassionate approach to care - one that recognises every patient as a person deserving of respect and attention."Prof. Ize-Iyamu said.

In his speech during the commissioning of the Geriatrics Library and Lounge, Prince (Dr.) Richard Oma Ahonaruogho (SAN) expressed gratitude for the exceptional care provided by the hospital to their late father, prompting the family's decision to give back.

The ceremony was graced by notable dignitaries, including Madam Josephine Ahonaruogho and Mrs. Mojisola Ahonaruogho, the mother and wife of Prince Ahonaruogho, as well as Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Chairman of the UNIBEN Trust Development Fund, Chief Kennester Oteghekpen and Prof. Eddy Erhagbe, who represented the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin.

Other attendees included Prof. Afekhide Omoti, President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Eustace Oseghale, Chairman of the NMA Edo State Branch, Prof. Roli Madubuko from the Department of Internal Medicine at UBTH, former UNIBEN Alumni Association President Prof. Alfred Ehigiegba, Ex-Edo Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe, Dr. Jude Osagie, C.E.O. of Precious Palm Royal Hotel (PPRH) and Emmanuel Oriazuwa Esq. among others.

The champions of the football event at the sixth edition of the UBTH Interdepartmental/Interprofessional Games Competition, Porters FC, on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the hospital management to present their championship trophy and express appreciation for the support and opportunity extended to them throughout the tournament.

The delegation, comprising 25 members of the victorious team, commended the hospital management for fostering an inclusive environment that enabled staff across all cadres to actively participate in the games. According to the team, the competition not only promoted healthy rivalry but also strengthened teamwork, unity, and camaraderie among staff from different departments and professional groups.

Speaking on behalf of the team, the Team Manager, Mr. Godfrey Osagbai Olubayo, expressed gratitude to the Chief Medical Director and the management for creating a platform that encouraged participation irrespective of staff cadre. He noted that the confidence reposed in the team and the sense of belonging created through the competition inspired them to remain focused and committed throughout the tournament, ultimately emerging as champions.

Receiving the delegation, the Chief Medical Director, Professor Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, congratulated Porters FC on their remarkable achievement, describing the team as disciplined, coordinated, resilient, and organized throughout the competition. As part of the management’s commitment to recognizing dedication and hard work, Professor Ize-Iyamu disclosed that members of the team who participated in the tournament and have consistently demonstrated diligence, commitment, and commendable work records would be considered during the hospital’s next recruitment exercise for permanent employment, subject to the hospital’s recruitment processes and available opportunities.

In recognition of the team’s outstanding performance, the hospital management presented a cash gift of ₦500,000 to the team. Management also celebrated team members whose families recently welcomed newborn babies by presenting them with cash gifts.

The highlight of the visit was the formal presentation of the championship trophy to the Chief Medical Director and the hospital management, symbolizing the team’s appreciation for the unwavering support received throughout the competition.
