National Cereals Research Institute, Badeggi National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI) is an Agricultural Research Institute under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Nigeria.

National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI) is given the mandate to conduct research into the genetic improvement and production of the major stable grains like rice, maize, cowpea and sugarcane. The re-organization of the agricultural research system in 1987 gave NCRI new mandate crops which are Rice, Soybean, Beniseed, Sugarcane, and the farming system in the Middle belt Zone
comprising of Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nassarawa, Niger, Plateau, Taraba States and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

*NCRI, Extension Africa Sign MoU on Digitalisation of Agricultural Extension and Advisory Services*

The National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI) on Thursday, 20 August 2026, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Extension Africa on the Digitisation of Agricultural Extension and Advisory Services (DAES).

The MoU was signed on behalf of NCRI by the Executive Director, Dr. Mohammed Ndagi Ishaq, while Mr. Abdulsamad Isah, Chief Operating Officer (COO), signed on behalf of Extension Africa.

The collaboration is aimed at leveraging digital technology and artificial intelligence to strengthen the delivery of agricultural extension and advisory services, particularly by making relevant agricultural knowledge, research findings and information on crops more accessible to farmers.

During the engagement, Extension Africa also provided an overview of the DAES platform and its potential applications in agricultural extension and advisory service delivery.

As part of the collaboration, NCRI has requested training for relevant staff to enhance their understanding of the platform and the application of artificial intelligence in agricultural extension and advisory services.

The partnership is expected to strengthen the connection between agricultural research and farmers by improving access to timely and relevant information that can support better farming decisions and productivity.

NCRI remains committed to embracing innovation and strategic partnerships that enhance the dissemination of agricultural research and contribute to sustainable agricultural development and food security in Nigeria

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS – GEF-8 FOOD SYSTEMS INTEGRATED PROGRAMME (FSIP)

The National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI), in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced professionals for key positions under the GEF-8 Food Systems Integrated Program (FSIP) – “Transformation to Sustainable Crops, Livestock and Aquaculture Food Systems in Nigeria.”

The project, financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) with FAO as the Implementing Agency and NCRI as the national Executing Entity, seeks to catalyze the transformation of Nigeria’s food systems towards sustainability, climate resilience, environmental restoration, inclusive value chains, improved livelihoods and food and nutrition security.

NCRI HOSTS HANDING OVER CEREMONY OF JAPAN GRANT AID RICE SEED PROJECT

The National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI), Badeggi, on Monday, 10 August 2026, hosted the Official Handing Over Ceremony of the Project for the Enhancement of Rice Seeds Production System in Nigeria under Japan’s Grant Aid.

The ceremony brought together the Honourable Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, representatives of the Government of Japan and JICA - Japan International Cooperation Agency , Chairman of the NCRI Governing Board, government officials, development partners and other stakeholders.

The project is a major boost to Nigeria’s rice value chain, with the provision of modern tractors and implements, rice transplanters, combine harvesters and seed production and testing equipment to strengthen mechanization and enhance the production of quality rice seeds.

The successful handover reflects the strong partnership between Japan, JICA, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, and NCRI in advancing agricultural development and national food security.

NCRI remains committed to ensuring the effective utilization and sustainability of the facilities and equipment towards a stronger rice value chain and a more food-secure Nigeria.
