ELECTIONS OF 2019 IN NIGERIA: FOR THE ERADICATION OF ELECTORAL VIOLENCE AND TOWARD FREE, FAIR, CREDIBLE, VIOLENCE FREE AND PEACEFUL CONDUCT

The expectation that election and peace settlement in the world’s most violent countries may lead eventually to a brave democratic world according to (Paul Collier of Oxford University, London,2009) can be said to be remote in the context of Nigeria.

This is especially by considering the result of the present investigation/research when virtually every respondent in Nigeria claims to have witnessed instances of violence during campaigns, at polling stations, and on election days.

The research findings further show that the electorates were not allowed their civic right of peacefully and willingly electing whom they chose. In the report of the 2008 electoral reform committee of Nigeria emphasis was made to perceive elections as a procedure for regulatory competition of political power through competition for votes.

It is, however discouraging to have found, through the present investigation that, the Nigerian mechanism for these competitions especially with respect to 2007/2011 general elections was not free of anarchy and violence.

Observers, including political leaders, subordinating politicians, other Government officials and the governed here referred as the electorates presented that the stakeholders in polity including contestants insist based on selfish interest that by hook or crook they must defeat the opposition.

According to the former Secretary of the Federal Electoral Commission (FEDECO) in 1979 Alhaji Ahmadu Kurfi, “basically, there is the perception of the people that rulers are not honest, that they are out to cheat them and not to help and improve their living chemistry. And the living chemistry as you know is bad that is the economic situation is very bad, people are very poor, many people, families have little to eat or drink clean water. But what do you expect when then, more than half the population earn less than $1 (one dollar) a day. So, there are not many factors that cause people react violently in some cases”.

To achieve success by all means, the stakeholders tend to sponsor unscrupulous individuals from within the community who are today referred to as hoodlums, thugs or bandits. These warriors are made to embattled whoever is not willing to succumb to their candidates/contestants and party instructions and/or choice. From the results, the election researchers/investigation identified that the situation in Kano and Katsina was not different from that of Kaduna State, Jigawa, Kebbi, Rivers, Enugu, Ekiti, Zanfara or Sokoto. The use of guns, fi****ms, swords, cutlasses, knives, canes and the likes had been popularized.
These are the kind of fears and retrogressive reports that were since envisaged by one political scientist in his publication .

The trend was that killing, brutality coupled with setting ablaze of public and private properties as well as creating total instability became the synonym for political election in Nigeria. Whether the implicated groups or the so called political mafias are ready to improve or not, respondents adjudged that a more serious leadership at the level of the countries Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) needed to be turned around.

Although the current Chairman of INEC Professor Yakubu is doing his best to conduct free and fair elections in 2019; with a view to save his credibility and integrity among global experts and elections professionals.

Perhaps, based on the foregoing demand for change, the President of Nigeria Muhammad Buhari (GCON) must allow (give him free hands). This has been approved by nearly all and sundry as he would perform to the expectation of all well meaning Nigerians and foreign stakeholders.

The issue of corruption and selfishness may then be checked to the bearest minimum in 2019 elections. And again, the use of PVC and the digital electoral system must be allowed to happen; as it use to happen in other democratic world. Otherwise, we are afraid that voters’ intimidation and violence, all aimed at silencing their voices may be recalcitrant.

The irony of the matter is that Nigerians have developed the oral tradition that whenever we talk of democratic election, it is associated with violence characterized by serious traumatic injury, mayhem and/or loses of life and properties. That fact has been implanted in Nigeria since early 1960s when democratic election became a matter of life and death. This made people to begin to think of democracy as “democrazy”.

It was understood that, the presidential system of government adopted by Nigeria is purely western tradition. But in the western world, there is belief that, democracy never fights one another. For example, the E.U. nations are unified and united by democratic system and common capitalist market economy. There are 28 countries and about 500 million people in EU, almost all of whom belong to the same religion, but speak different languages like in Nigeria. In this respect, this research/investigation writing argues that, unless Nigerians find a stable democratic system that will match their traditions and cultures, then peace, development and prosperity will not emerge.

Professor Attahiru Jega (Ibadan, 2007) asks: “how can genuine democratization be ensured? Can democracy be successful in the context of mass poverty? Is democracy incompatible with our values, orientation and cultures and traditions? Is democracy only possible in the context of a capitalist system? How credible and viable are alternative democratic conceptions? How can democracy be sustained? How can democracy be consolidated in countries such as Nigeria, with profound legacies of militarism and militarization?” Who can answer the above questions?

THE FUTURE OF NIGER SOUTH SENATORIAL (ZONE A): MAINTAINING THE TRAJECTORY AND PEDAGOGIC INDOCTRINATION OF THE FUTURE GENERATIONS ON EXCELLENT POLITICAL POLICIES---

Politics is the process of solving public problems and the process takes place through communication. This means that by electing the representatives of the people by the people (electorates) through free, fair, credible and acceptable elections the wishes of the people has been fulfilled via democratic communication. And what will be the next is for the representatives of the people to do what they promise to do for the people that elected them--- pure and simple.

The ENGR A A ABU's ambition right from his senatorial contest in 2019 is to cleanse the democratic system of Niger south senatorial (zone A); of which it is undeniable fact the system is being undermined by corruption, naivety, mismanagement, violence, bad governance and generally breakages of almost all the 57 rules and principles of democratic system in this resourceful emerging Zone (Niger south ).

Allah (SWT) blesses our Zone with both human and natural resources. The only thing remain for Niger south senatorial (Zone A) is to get honest, forecast, visionary, accountable, positive mission, democratic, patriotic, ambitious to move the zone forward, fearless, determine, with political will and ready to lead. Generally speaking; we all agreed that (even our leaders) that Engr A A Abu is honest, incorruptible with zeal and patriotism to see Niger south senatorial zone shouldered with other Zone. But, unfortunately the zone Niger south senatorial has been technically poisoned (via corruption and generally bad governance) by the past leaders.

The failure of the past ruling party (PDP) in the Zone to fulfill the promises made to the electorates in their 16 years ruler-ship seemed to be the causative agent of the current economic crisis being experiencing by people's. Therefore, in Niger south senatorial democratic setting, the only hope remain for people is for us to ensure positive changes in our life. We must be hard working and maximization and utilization of time (time is the most precious element in human life) to be honest, united and love one another. Education, agriculture, local manufacturing and leveraging the trade activities within the West African continent should be the best agenda to locally develop our local economy.

But care must be taken because of the high expectation from people between 2015 to 2019. The APC must carefully serialize and strategize plans that will move Niger south senatorial forward ASAP (as soon as possible). Otherwise, people will loose interest in political democracy. Because the whole system (now) is still facing stagflation especially among the younger generations of Zone A
Let support Engr A A Abu 4 Senate coming 2019 Insha Allah

NIGER SOUTH SENATORIAL ZONE A: DEMOCRACY AND INITIAL /HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES

Democracy has been globally in practice since 508:BC. The system was initiated in Athens (Greece). The essence is for the Demos (people) to use kpatos (power or strength) and elect their representatives in all sphere of governance. The first principle of democracy is participation of all citizens in the affairs of the nation---pure and simple. Democratic politics is a process concerning power. In modern day politics, it is not just about getting power, it is also about competing values, interest and ambition. For example, the business community in any nation or society cannot in their millions or thousands go to the rulers or leadership to tell or say their suggestions, complains, advice on what will affect their life or business. Also, on law making processes or on their economic vi-abilities and so on. Also the professional bodies such as NBA, Medical associations, teachers association and such similar organizations in a nation must have their representatives in the affairs of governance in a nation. The rational behind the democratic system is to solve the public problems; be it economy, political (governance) or social issues that will positively or negatively will impact the people's life. That's political democracy!

Aristotle remarked that “the individual is a political animal; he indicates the primacy of politics and the fact that political thinking takes place at various levels and in a variety of ways. The ‘political’, in such a view becomes not only all pervasive but also the highest kind of activity. Politics symbolizes a collective public life, wherein people create institutions that regulate their common life”.

Democracy is defined by freedom of speech and assembly, free elections and a government resulting from such free elections, the separation of powers and the rule of law which is engaged in the political process.

I understand that, democracy means;- public- sphere>debate>majority>free>forum>individual>election>citizen>leaders>majority>representation>minority’s voice/protection>legitimacy and control>administration> governed and governing>institution>rule of law>equal>no force and violence>agnostic (Greek word)>elitist playful between people>legalistic/liberal>discursive>neutrality/ common good> secular>referendum>consensus.

Participation and control are done through institutional organizations which mobilize and harmonize people and opinions in order to influence or control political power.

Some of these institutions are the political parties. Political parties are necessary part of democracy. But the existence of political parties does not necessary qualify a system to be democratic.

Professor Tatah Mentan of the institute for Global Studies, University of Minnesota is an expert in political science and teaches courses on globalization and security studies, says “Democracy is about political choice fostered by meaningful political competition. In a democracy all partisan interest and ideological flavors have a chance to make their case to electorate. A well functioning democracy does not guarantee success in the political (or economic) market place.Rather; it does assure that everyone should potentially be capable of securing office”.

Conclusively, The question is are we (Niger south senatorial Zone A) really practicing real democratic system? Is endorsement part of democracy or is the creation of our leaders? Is Niger south senatorial Zone A democracy on the right path? Let give a credible and competent candidate
a chance to lead us in the higher chamber ,in the forth coming election.
Let give engr. A.A Abu a chance to take us to the promise land...thank you all
