Earlier today, I joined our dear Governor, Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi, and other dignitaries to commission the rehabilitated Nigerian Chronicle in Calabar. The newspaper, one of Nigeria’s historic media institutions, was vandalised during the destruction that accompanied the protests in October 2020.

The restoration of the Chronicle is more than the reopening of a newspaper house; it is a renewed commitment to preserving our history, strengthening our media institutions, and creating opportunities for the people of Cross River State. I commend the Governor for bringing this important institution back to life.

Earlier Today, I presented the Supplementary Budget, alongside two important pieces of legislation, the Medical Quackery (Prohibition) Bill and the Social Welfare Bill, to His Excellency, the Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, for assent.

These legislative measures reflect our collective commitment to strengthening governance, protecting our people from unqualified medical practitioners, and expanding social welfare interventions for vulnerable citizens.

As a Legislature, we remain focused on enacting laws that respond to the needs of our people, advance good governance, and support the Governor’s People’s First agenda.

Earlier Today, we proceeded on a working recess at the Cross River State House of Assembly.

For me, this is not a break from duty. It is an opportunity to step beyond the chambers, return to our constituencies, engage directly with our people, listen to their concerns, monitor developments and strengthen the connection between the Assembly and the people we represent.

I encouraged my colleagues to remain accessible and fully committed to their responsibilities throughout this period. Our legislative duties continue, even outside the chambers.

As we proceed on this working recess, I will continue to provide the leadership required to keep the 10th Assembly focused on quality legislation, effective representation and responsible oversight in the interest of Cross Riverians.

We will reconvene for plenary on September 29, 2026.

I wish my colleagues a productive working recess and look forward to returning with renewed energy and commitment to the service of our people.

Today, my wife, Mrs. Nelly Elverts Ayambem, and I joined family, friends, colleagues and well-wishers in Ugep to bid farewell to the late Deaconess (Mrs.) Alice Nkanu Effiom, mother-in-law of Ntufam, Hon. Okon Nyong Owuna, Member Representing Akamkpa I State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly.

At 85, Mama lived a life defined by faith, service and devotion to God. As a dedicated member of The Apostolic Church, Ijom District, Ugep, she remained committed to her faith and service to the Church until her passing.

We mourn with the Owuna family and all who were touched by Mama’s life. While her departure leaves a painful void, we are comforted by the legacy of love, faith and service she leaves behind.

May God grant her eternal rest and give the family the strength and comfort to bear this irreparable loss.

Education remains one of the greatest investments we can make in the future of our people.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of supporting three promising law students from Cross River State. I facilitated academic grants for two law graduates to enable them proceed to the Nigerian Law School, while also sponsoring the school fees of another student currently studying Law at the University of Calabar.

I firmly believe that no brilliant and hardworking young person should be denied the opportunity to achieve their dreams because of financial limitations. By investing in education today, we are raising the next generation of legal minds, leaders and nation builders.

This intervention is in line with my enduring commitment to human capital development. Earlier this year, I facilitated a ₦10 million bursary for students in higher institutions and distributed educational materials to pupils and students across my constituency. These efforts reflect my conviction that empowering our young people through education is the surest path to sustainable development.

I congratulate Goodluck Ndoma Ese, Gracious-Gift Mfam and Ebaye Aruku on their academic journey. I encourage them to remain focused, uphold excellence and become worthy ambassadors of Cross River State and Nigeria.

Together, we will continue to build a future where every deserving child has the opportunity to learn, grow and succeed.

A day spent with the Vigilante Group of Nigeria is a reminder that the safety of our communities depends not only on government institutions but also on the courage and commitment of patriotic citizens who stand on the frontlines of community security.

Their vigilance, sacrifice, and partnership with conventional security agencies continue to strengthen peace, protect lives and property, and inspire confidence across our communities. As leaders, we must continue to support initiatives that promote collaboration, professionalism, and safer neighbourhoods for all.

Together, we remain committed to building a more secure, peaceful, and prosperous Cross River State.

HAPPY NEW MONTH

I was delighted to receive the Face of Teen Beauty Pageant International queens and to commend their organization for its remarkable commitment to grooming young people, building their confidence, and promoting values that shape responsible future leaders.

I encouraged the queens to remain focused on their education while carrying out their responsibilities as titleholders. A crown should never be an excuse to neglect learning; rather, it should serve as a symbol of excellence, discipline, integrity, and purposeful leadership.

To every young person, remember that true success is built on character, knowledge, and hard work. I remain committed to supporting initiatives that empower our youth and prepare them to make meaningful contributions to society.
