I’m grateful to the Nigerian Red Cross Society, IFRC and all partners for joining CR‑SEMA in Calabar to launch a 10‑day anticipatory flood action for the 2026 rainy season. Following NIHSA’s advisory, we’ve prioritized Biase (Agwagune, Adim) and Calabar South (Anantigha, Otokang) for community preparedness activities — early warning, WASH, school awareness, clean‑ups and evacuation readiness. Thanks to our emergency partners, local government leaders and agencies for their swift coordination and support. Let’s act early, stay informed, and protect lives and livelihoods across Cross River.

Yesterday, I led the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CR-SEMA), in collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross Society, to Biase Local Government Area as part of our ongoing flood preparedness and anticipatory action campaign.

We engaged the Local Government leadership, traditional rulers, community representatives, security agencies, education stakeholders and the Local Emergency Management Committee on the importance of taking early warnings seriously and preparing ahead of possible flooding.

I assured the people of Biase that the era of delayed government response to emergencies is over. Under the leadership of our Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Otu, we are committed to ensuring that vulnerable communities receive timely attention and support whenever disasters occur.

Our sensitization campaign will cover all 18 Local Government Areas through radio, social media, billboards, jingles, community engagements and traditional communication channels, including town criers.

I also encouraged residents to report emerging threats promptly to their Local Emergency Management Committees and to remain alert to local signs of flooding.

Preparedness saves lives. At CR-SEMA, we will continue to work with the Nigerian Red Cross Society and other stakeholders to ensure that Cross River communities are better prepared, better informed and better protected.

Together, we can reduce disaster risks and protect lives and livelihoods.

Today, I led a joint assessment team comprising officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigerian Red Cross Society to inspect the landslide that severely damaged the uncompleted Blake's Resort at Marina Resort, Calabar.

The assessment revealed significant structural damage to the facility, with parts of the roof and other sections destroyed by the landslide. We also visited the gully erosion site along Anansa Road, where the expanding erosion has continued to threaten nearby homes, with one building already suffering partial structural collapse.

These incidents underscore the growing risks posed by erosion and landslides, particularly during the rainy season. I urge residents and developers in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant, promptly report early signs of ground movement and erosion, and support efforts aimed at protecting our environment.

CR-SEMA will continue to work closely with NEMA and other partners to assess disaster risks, strengthen early warning systems and advocate for timely interventions that will safeguard lives and property across Cross River State.

Today, I joined the Managing Director of the South South Development Commission (SSDC), Miss Usoro Offiong Akpabio, alongside officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigerian Red Cross Society, on an assessment tour of flood and landslide-affected communities in Calabar.

We visited the landslide site at Anansa Street, flood-affected areas in Big Qua, Elijah Henshaw and Atu Street, as well as temporary shelters housing displaced persons. We also inspected the CR-SEMA Central Warehouse to assess our emergency response capacity.

The visit is a strong demonstration of the Federal Government's concern for the welfare of Cross River people and reinforces our confidence that additional humanitarian support will reach affected communities.

While the Cross River State Government has continued to respond within available resources, we remain committed to strengthening disaster preparedness and protecting lives and livelihoods. In the coming days, CR-SEMA will commence a statewide flood advocacy and public sensitization campaign across all eighteen Local Government Areas to promote responsible environmental practices and reduce the impact of flooding.

I sincerely appreciate the Managing Director of the SSDC and her team for taking the time to assess the situation firsthand. Together, we will continue to work towards building safer, more resilient communities across Cross River State.

August is a reminder that preparedness saves lives and as we remain within the rainy season, I urge everyone to stay vigilant, heed weather advisories, keep drainage channels free of blockages, and promptly report emergencies to the appropriate authorities. This is to ensure we we reduce disaster risks and build safer, more resilient communities.

Today marked the successful conclusion of our three-day Full Scale Flood Disaster Response Simulation Exercise held at Marina Beach, Calabar, organised by the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CR-SEMA) in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Barely one month after assuming office as Director General of CR-SEMA, I am deeply encouraged by the remarkable level of collaboration, professionalism and commitment demonstrated by participating emergency response agencies, humanitarian partners, Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs), community volunteers and other stakeholders. The exercise has further strengthened our resolve to build a safer, more prepared and more resilient Cross River State.

I sincerely appreciate His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Anthony Owan Enoh, for reaffirming the State Government's unwavering commitment to disaster preparedness and for the confidence reposed in our agency. His administration's support continues to inspire us to intensify efforts toward protecting lives and property across the state.

My profound gratitude also goes to the Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, and the entire NEMA team for choosing Cross River State to host this important national exercise. Their partnership reflects our shared commitment to strengthening disaster risk reduction and enhancing emergency response capacity across Nigeria.

The live simulation clearly demonstrated the importance of preparedness, community participation and effective inter-agency collaboration. It also highlighted the critical role of Local Emergency Management Committees as the first line of response during emergencies before additional state and national support arrives.

As an agency, we will build on the gains of this exercise. In the coming weeks, CR-SEMA will commence a statewide flood sensitization campaign through radio, social media, billboards and community engagement to ensure that flood safety messages reach every vulnerable community across Cross River State.

Disaster management is a shared responsibility. I therefore urge all residents to pay attention to early warning advisories, cooperate with emergency responders and actively support efforts aimed at building safer and more resilient communities.

Together, we can reduce disaster risks, save lives and protect livelihoods.

Yesterday, I had the honour of hosting officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), alongside security agencies, emergency responders, humanitarian organisations and other critical stakeholders, as we finalized plans for the forthcoming three-day Flood Simulation Exercise in Calabar South.

The exercise is a proactive step towards improving our preparedness for the 2026 flood season. It will test our emergency response systems, strengthen inter-agency collaboration, and equip our communities with the knowledge and capacity to respond effectively during flood emergencies.

I sincerely appreciate the Honourable Member representing Calabar South I State Constituency, Hon. Chief Dr. Effiong Ekarika, NEMA officials, and every stakeholder for their commitment to safeguarding lives and property in Cross River State.

At CR-SEMA, we remain committed to building resilient communities through collaboration, preparedness, and timely action. Together, we can reduce disaster risks and ensure a safer Cross River for all.

Today, I visited the site of the tragic landslide at Boro Pit, Satellite Town, Calabar, to assess the situation firsthand following the heavy rainfall that claimed one life and affected residential buildings.

My heartfelt condolences go to the bereaved family, and I sympathize with every resident impacted by this unfortunate incident. CR-SEMA will immediately carry out a comprehensive damage and needs assessment to determine the level of destruction and provide the necessary recommendations for intervention.

I remain concerned that emergency calls often come only after disasters have already occurred. As a government, our goal is to strengthen disaster risk reduction measures so that such incidents can be prevented before they happen.

I also urge residents, particularly those living in landslide and flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant, promptly report signs of danger to CR-SEMA, and strictly comply with safety advisories throughout this rainy season.

Yesterday, our amiable Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Otu, provided financial support to families who lost their loved ones in the recent flood and landslide disasters in Calabar.

The presentation, carried out on the Governor's behalf by the Special Adviser on General Duties, Barr. Ekpenyong Akiba, in collaboration with my office, reflects the State Government's commitment to standing with citizens in times of distress.

While no amount of support can replace the precious lives lost, I believe this compassionate intervention will provide some relief and reassure the affected families that they are not alone.

At the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CR-SEMA), we remain committed to advancing Governor Otu's humanitarian agenda by working closely with critical partners to ensure disaster victims receive timely assistance while strengthening disaster preparedness and response across Cross River State.

I once again extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray that God grants them the strength and comfort to bear these irreparable losses.

Earlier today, I led a team from the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CR-SEMA), accompanied by officials of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, on an on-the-spot assessment at Ikot Anwatim in Calabar Municipality, the scene of the tragic landslide that claimed five lives and left two others hospitalized.

At the scene, we assessed the extent of the disaster, engaged directly with the affected families, sympathized with survivors, and witnessed firsthand the pain and devastation this unfortunate incident has brought upon the community.

I used the opportunity to express His Excellency, Governor Otu's deepest condolences to the bereaved families, prayed for the speedy recovery of those currently receiving medical treatment, and assured the victims and residents that the state government through SEMA will facilitate humanitarian assistance and other necessary interventions to support those affected.

This tragedy serves as a solemn reminder that disasters can occur without warning, particularly during the rainy season. I therefore urge all residents to remain vigilant, promptly report signs of erosion, ground cracks, or unstable land to the appropriate authorities, and avoid areas identified as high-risk. Early reporting and community cooperation can save lives.

As Director General of CR-SEMA, I reaffirm our commitment to protecting lives, reducing disaster risks, and strengthening community preparedness across Cross River State. We will continue to work closely with our partners and local communities to ensure timely response, effective coordination, and support whenever emergencies arise.

May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may God grant their families the strength and comfort to bear this painful loss.
