Here are 5 powerful lessons from the book How to Listen, Hear, and Validate: Break Through Invisible Barriers and Transform Your Relationships (How to be More Likable and Charismatic)
1. Understand the importance of listening. Listening is the foundation of all communication. When we listen attentively, we show others that we care about what they have to say and that we want to understand them. This can help to build trust and rapport, and it can also help to resolve conflict.
2. Learn the difference between listening and hearing. Listening is the act of paying attention to what someone is saying, both verbally and nonverbally. Hearing is the act of perceiving the sounds that someone is making. Listening is more active than hearing, and it requires us to make an effort to understand what the other person is saying.
3. Develop your listening skills. There are a number of things you can do to improve your listening skills. These include:
Paying attention to the speaker. This means making eye contact, nodding your head, and avoiding distractions.
Asking questions. This shows that you are interested in what the other person has to say and that you want to understand them better.
Paraphrasing what you have heard. This demonstrates that you have been listening and that you are trying to understand the other person's perspective.
Avoiding interrupting. This can be frustrating for the speaker and can make it difficult for them to finish their thoughts.
4. Learn to identify and manage your own emotions. When we are emotional, it can be difficult to listen effectively. We may be more likely to interrupt, judge, or become defensive. It is important to be aware of your own emotions and to take steps to manage them before you engage in a conversation.
5. Validate the speaker's feelings. Validation is the act of acknowledging and accepting another person's feelings, even if you don't agree with them.
