ONNA LAWMAKER CONDUCTS CONSTITUENCY BRIEFING AND MEGA EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMME
The Member representing Onna State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon. (Elder) Sunday Udofot Johnny, organized a constituency briefing and a comprehensive empowerment programme for constituents across the Onna Local Government Area on Monday.
This initiative aimed to enhance livelihoods, promote sustainable development, and provide long-term support for constituents.
Governor Umo Eno, represented by the Chairman of the Association of Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, Hon. Uwemedimo Udo, praised the initiative as a testament to purposeful leadership. He encouraged other lawmakers to replicate this gesture and expressed optimism that the people of Onna would grant the lawmaker another mandate in 2027.
Former Governor UDOM Emmanuel , represented by Barrister Iwat Umoren, commended the people of Onna for their dedication to peace and development, describing the empowerment as a reflection of inclusive representation aligned with the principles of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otung, emphasized the synergy between the executive and legislative branches of government, noting that the programme was made possible through the benevolence of Governor Eno. He described Hon. Johnny was an asset to the constituency and urged constituents to continue supporting his future ambitions.
Hon. Johnny outlined his achievements, which include sponsoring four bills and eight motions, facilitating employment for 30 constituents, and prioritizing education, human capital development, and small business support.
Educational initiatives included grants for 43 students, including individuals with disabilities, the construction of a three-classroom block in Awa Ubium, and the provision of solar-powered boreholes in local schools.
In terms of human capital development, 19 constituents received vocational training in areas such as solar installation, scaffolding, computer studies, and heavy equipment operation, while 14 entrepreneurs benefited from business grants.
Healthcare interventions included hospital bill payments for 33 constituents, support for expectant mothers through the provision of birth kits, and general hospital visits.
Infrastructure projects encompassed road grading across ten communities, the construction of 64 market stalls at Urua Ederebo Market, the rehabilitation of boreholes, and the repair of a vandalised transformer in Afaha Atai.
During the empowerment programme, items distributed included seven vehicles, five sets of shuttle buses, five sets of tricycles, 30 motorcycles, 42 sewing machines, 42 hair washing basins, 42 sets of haircut accessories, 15 grinding machines, 15 vulcanizing machines, 35 generators, ten heavy-duty generators, educational grants for 100 beneficiaries, business development grants for 100 beneficiaries, business grants for 20 individuals with disabilities, and skill acquisition training for 25 beneficiaries.
The Chairman of Onna Local Government Council, Hon. Kufre Umoren , and other community leaders commended the initiative for its transparency, accountability, and inclusivity. They urged beneficiaries to utilize the items productively and expressed confidence that Onna would continue to reap the benefits of democratic dividends.
The event attracted a substantial turnout of political leaders, stakeholders, and constituents, underscoring growing support for people-centered initiatives in the local government area.
