The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, smicm, today, August 30, 2026, attended the 2026 New Yam Festival of Ibagwa-Nike Kingdom in Enugu East Local Government Area, hosted by His Royal Majesty (HRM), Igwe (Dr.) Emmanuel Ugwu.

The Commissioner’s attendance underscores the Command’s commitment to social policing, community partnership, cultural engagement, and strengthening police–citizen relations as key components of effective policing and sustainable peace.

CP Giwa congratulated the traditional ruler and the people of the Ibagwa-Nike Kingdom for the celebration. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to working closely with traditional institutions, community leaders, and residents to promote peace, security, and harmonious coexistence across Enugu State.

2027 ELECTION CAMPAIGNS: ENUGU CP GIWA ENGAGES POLITICAL PARTY LEADERS ON PEACEFUL, VIOLENCE-FREE CAMPAIGNS

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, smicm, today, August 26, 2026, engaged leaders of political parties in the State in an interactive meeting on the need for peaceful and violence-free campaigns ahead of the 2027 General Elections. The meeting, held under the umbrella of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCESS), provided an opportunity for stakeholders to deliberate on measures to strengthen collaboration and ensure peaceful and orderly electioneering.

CP Giwa urged political parties to properly coordinate their campaign activities and provide the Police with information on proposed campaign venues, routes, dates and timings to prevent clashes and facilitate adequate security arrangements. He also cautioned against hate speech, incitement, threats, provocative utterances and other conduct capable of escalating political tension or triggering violence, warning that any violation of extant laws would be dealt with appropriately in accordance with the law.

The Commissioner assured the political parties of the readiness of the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies under the ICCESS framework, to provide adequate security and a level playing field for all parties to conduct their campaigns in a peaceful, serene and orderly atmosphere. He called on party leaders to take responsibility for the conduct of their candidates, members and supporters, and to prevail on them to eschew violence and respect opposing views.

The meeting featured interactive contributions from political party leaders and other stakeholders, and was attended by heads of other security agencies, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Enugu State, Dr. Chukwu Chukwuemeka, and the IPAC State Chairman, Hon. Elvis Ugwoke.

Others in attendance were the leaders and members of the Action Alliance (AA), African Action Congress (AAC), Action Democratic Party (ADP), Action Peoples Party (APP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Boot Party (BOOT), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), National Rescue Movement (NRM), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Youth Party (YP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

CP GIWA SUSTAINS INTERSTATE HANDSHAKE PATROL TO ENUGU/BENUE BORDER, VISITS DIVISIONS, CHARGES PERSONNEL TO UPHOLD PROFESSIONALISM AND EFFECTIVE POLICE-CITIZENS RELATIONS

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, smicm, has sustained his routine patrols across the State, with the latest conducted today, August 25, 2026, covering the Udenu Area through the Enugu-Opi-Nsukka Road and extending to the Enugu/Benue boundary. At the boundary point, he was received by the Otukpa Area Commander, Benue State Command, ACP Cosmas Eze.

CP Giwa charged ACP Eze and his Udenu counterpart, ACP Stephen Abiaziem, to sustain the existing interstate operational synergy through the Handshake Patrol initiative of the Nigeria Police Force, introduced by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc (+), NPM. He emphasised that collaboration between adjoining State Commands is a key strategy for tackling contemporary and complex crimes, and urged both Area Commanders to maximise the opportunities provided by the Handshake Patrol initiative.

The Commissioner of Police also visited the Udenu, Umabor and Unity Divisions, where he addressed the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and personnel on professionalism, respect for citizens’ rights and courteous treatment of members of the public. At the Enugu-Opi-Nsukka Road, he engaged operatives of the Distress Response Squad (DRS), warning them against extortion and other forms of corruption. Charge Room Officers (CROs) and other personnel were also reminded that they are the first point of contact for members of the public visiting the Police Station and must, therefore, project the image and values of the Nigeria Police Force.

The routine patrols and supervisory divisional visits, which are in line with the policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, are aimed at strengthening proactive and intelligence-led policing, preventing crime, boosting public confidence and enhancing professionalism.

The Commissioner of Police was accompanied on the patrol by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Gregory Itobore; the Commanding Officer, No. 3 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Enugu, ACP Azeez Idowu; the Commander, Distress Response Squad (DRS), ACP Kelvin Aiyegbusi; and the Head, Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), CSP Henry Imo. Also on the patrol were the Head, Anti-Kidnapping Sub-Unit of the VCRU, CSP Chukwuka Odum; the Commanding Officer, Counter Terrorism Unit, SP Uju Okeke; and the Head, Anti-Cultism Sub-Unit of the VCRU, DSP Isaac Odogwu, among other officers and men.

ENUGU POLICE RESCUE THREE ABDUCTION VICTIMS, RECOVER TWO FI****MS, AMMUNITION, INTENSIFY MANHUNT FOR FLEEING SUSPECTS

Operatives of the Enugu State Command attached to Anti-Cultism Sub-Unit of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), with support from Neighbourhood Watch and community members, have rescued three victims of abduction and recovered their Lexus RX350, two locally made fi****ms, ammunition and other exhibits. The operation followed credible intelligence received at about 1:30 a.m. on August 18, 2026, while the operatives were on crime-prevention patrol along the Port Harcourt Expressway, Enugu, concerning the carjacking and abduction of occupants of a Lexus RX350 within Independence Layout by armed hoodlums.

Acting swiftly, the operatives commenced a hot pursuit of the suspects, which continued to Hillview Road, Independence Layout. On reaching the area, the suspects abandoned the vehicle and their fi****ms before fleeing the scene. The three victims were subsequently rescued unharmed, with support from members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group and law-abiding citizens, and taken to safety.

Recovered from the scene were the said victim's vehicle, one locally fabricated Beretta-like pistol loaded with five rounds of 9mm live ammunition, one locally made cut-to-size firearm, one live cartridge, a pair of hand gloves, one skimask and one mobile phone, all abandoned by the fleeing suspects. Investigation has been intensified, with a manhunt launched to identify and arrest the fleeing suspects, recover further exhibits and establish their involvement in the crime.

He reiterated the Command’s commitment to sustaining intelligence-led and community-supported operations against kidnapping, armed robbery, car snatching and other violent crimes, while urging members of the public to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information to the Police.

NPF INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2026: CP GIWA LAUNCHES POLICE CAMPAIGN AGAINST POLITICAL, DIGITAL THUGGERY, INTERACTS WITH YOUTHS, URGES THEM TO RESIST MANIPULATION BY POLITICAL ACTORS

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, smicm, today officially launched the Police Campaign Against Political and Digital Thuggery during a Police–Youth Dialogue in Enugu. The event formed part of the Nigeria Police Force International Youth Day 2026 celebration and was held at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess, Agbani Road, Enugu. It was organised under the NPF National Youth Leadership and Security Initiative, with the themes “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations” and “My Future Is Greater Than Political Thuggery.”

During the interactive session, the CP responded to questions from youths and students on the role of young people during elections, police actions and responsibilities during electoral processes, electoral offences committed by political actors and their prosecution, as well as police professional conduct and accountability. He urged youths to resist manipulation by political actors, reject violence and desist from using digital platforms for incitement, intimidation, harassment and other forms of criminality.

The Commissioner stressed that young Nigerians have a critical role to play in strengthening democracy and security, urging them to channel their energy and influence towards constructive civic participation, innovation and leadership rather than political or digital thuggery. He also reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to professional, impartial and accountable policing, while encouraging sustained engagement and partnership between the Police and young people.

The participating youth and student groups, including leaders of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Nigeria Youth Congress (NYC), Nsukka Youth Assembly, Igbo Youth Movement and National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), expressed their readiness to work with the Police and pledged to shun political and digital thuggery. The event was also attended by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth and Students Affairs, Hon. Prisca Okeke; Head, Department of Public Administration, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Prof. Ezeodili Walter Obi; representatives of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Obra Foundation/Obra Legal, Presidents-General of communities, as well as other youths and officers and men of the Command.

CP Giwa views the campaign as a critical initiative of the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc (+), NPM, for building trust and cooperation with young Nigerians. He therefore calls on youths across Enugu State to embrace its message, “MY FUTURE IS GREATER THAN POLITICAL THUGGERY,” and choose peaceful participation, responsible citizenship and positive leadership over violence and criminal manipulation.

The Enugu State Police Command today, Friday, August 21, 2026, held a Walkathon through major streets in Enugu metropolis as part of activities marking the Nigeria Police Force International Youth Day 2026 celebration under the National Youth Leadership and Security Initiative. During the exercise, participants engaged residents and road users on the need to promote peace, security, reject violence and shun political thuggery and other forms of criminality.

The Walkathon was anchored on the International Youth Day 2026 theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” and the Nigeria Police Force Special National Campaign theme, “My Future is Greater Than Political Thuggery.” The initiative is aimed at strengthening police-youth relations, promoting responsible citizenship and encouraging young people to reject the use of violence in political and social activities.

The activities will continue tomorrow, Saturday, August 22, 2026, with a Police-Youth Dialogue at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess, Agbani Road, Enugu. The event will feature the formal launch of the Police Campaign Against Political and Digital Thuggery, providing a platform for youths, police personnel and other stakeholders to interact, exchange ideas and strengthen collaborative efforts towards a safer and more peaceful society.

CP GIWA RECEIVES NANS LEADERSHIP, OUTLINES ACTIVITIES FOR NPF INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2026 COMMEMORATION IN ENUGU STATE

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, smicm, has received and interacted with the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in the State as part of preparations for the Nigeria Police Force International Youth Day 2026 celebration. He urged the student leaders to continue engaging their fellow students on the need to remain law-abiding, focused and committed to their education, while shunning cultism, drug and substance abuse, related crimes and other social vices.

The NANS delegation, comprising Comrade Emmanuel Ikechukwu Obi, NANS Zone-F Coordinator; Comrade Kelvin Okeke, Chairman, Enugu State Chapter of NANS Joint Consultative Council; and other leaders, commended the Command, under the leadership of the CP, for its efforts in stabilising security and maintaining professionalism in the State.

Meanwhile, CP Giwa has outlined activities for the NPF International Youth Day 2026 celebration under the National Youth Leadership and Security Initiative. Riding on the global theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” and the Police Special National Campaign theme, “My Future is Greater Than Political Thuggery,” the celebration will commence with a Walkathon through the streets of Enugu metropolis on the morning of Friday, August 21, 2026.

ENUGU POLICE ARREST 23-YEAR-OLD SUSPECTED TRANSFORMER VANDAL AFTER ELECTROCUTION IN CITIZEN-SUPPORTED OPERATION

The Enugu State Police Command, on August 17, 2026, arrested a 23-year-old suspected transformer vandal, identified as Nnaji Chidiebere, after he was found unconscious with various degrees of burns while allegedly vandalising a transformer along Ogbaike Road, Obollo-Afor, Udenu Local Government Area. His arrest followed credible information from community members that he had been discovered at about 2:20 p.m., trapped inside the transformer while allegedly attempting to vandalise it.

Upon receiving the information, operatives of the Command attached to Udenu Police Division promptly mobilised to the scene, found the suspect unconscious with various degrees of burns. He was immediately evacuated to a nearby hospital, where he was resuscitated and subsequently referred to a specialist hospital for further treatment.

Upon regaining consciousness, the suspect identified himself as Nnaji Chidiebere and stated that he had been alone at the scene. Preliminary investigation, however, has linked him to transformer vandalism in the area. Further investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of his activities, identify possible accomplices, and facilitate his prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, smicm, commended the community members for their prompt intervention and information, which enabled the Police to respond swiftly, rescue and arrest the suspect. He reiterated the Command’s firm commitment to protecting critical public infrastructure and urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information on suspicious activities.

IYD: ENUGU CP INTERACTS WITH LEGAL INTERNS, CONGRATULATES YOUTHS, URGES FOCUS AND LAW-ABIDING CONDUCT

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, smicm, has charged young people to remain focused, law-abiding and worthy ambassadors of their families and professions. He gave the charge during an interactive session with legal interns from Obra Legal Law Practice, Enugu, where he addressed questions on Police professionalism, discipline, proactive policing and crime-fighting, as well as the legal framework governing the use of fi****ms by Police officers under the Constitution, the Nigeria Police Act, 2020 (as amended), and Force Order 237.

CP Giwa also explained the role of security patrols and stop-and-search operations in crime prevention, stressing that Police officers have no right to search citizens' phones during such operations except where a phone is lawfully subject to an investigation. He urged the interns and the public to promptly report acts of Police misconduct or unprofessionalism, assuring that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken against any officer found culpable.

The team, led by Daniel Aloh, Esq., Senior Associate at Obra Legal Law Practice, thanked the Commissioner for the opportunity to engage with him on policing and legal issues. He commended the Command's security efforts and assured that the interns would apply the knowledge gained from the engagement and continue to support lawful policing.

Meanwhile, as part of activities marking the 2026 International Youth Day (IYD), CP Giwa congratulated the youths of Enugu State and urged them to remain focused, law-abiding and committed to their aspirations. He cautioned them against cultism, social, economic and political vices, and other forms of criminality, while urging eligible youths to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate responsibly in the 2027 general elections. He warned against allowing themselves to be used as political thugs or agents of violence and electoral malpractice, noting that offenders would face the legal consequences of their actions.

The Commissioner also invited Enugu youths to the official launch of the Nigeria Police Force National Campaign Against Political and Digital Thuggery and a Police-Youth Dialogue scheduled for Saturday, 22nd August 2026, in the State. The event is part of activities marking International Youth Day 2026 and the Nigeria Police Force National Youth Leadership and Security Initiative, aimed at promoting peaceful, free and fair 2027 general elections.
