Martha was doing the right things. Mary was doing the one necessary thing.

Luke 10 shows Martha “distracted with much serving,” frustrated that her sister Mary is sitting at Jesus’s feet listening instead of helping in the kitchen. Martha asks Jesus to tell Mary to help. Instead, Jesus gently redirects Martha: “one thing is necessary, and Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Martha’s service wasn’t wrong. Hospitality mattered. But her anxiety and busyness had crowded out the very presence she was working so hard to serve.

It’s possible to be so busy doing things for God that we miss simply being with Him. Sometimes the better choice isn’t the productive one — it’s the still one.

He never left home. He never wasted anything. And somehow, he’s the one who ends up outside the celebration.

Luke 15 doesn’t end when the prodigal son returns — it continues with his older brother, furious that a party is being thrown for the sibling who squandered everything, while he’d stayed faithful and never even gotten a small celebration of his own. His father comes out and pleads with him to come in, reminding him: “all that I have is yours.”

The older brother’s anger isn’t really about fairness. It’s about a heart that had been obeying out of obligation, not love — measuring his worth by comparison instead of resting in what he already had access to the whole time.

It’s possible to do everything right and still miss the celebration, if what’s keeping you outside is a heart more focused on what someone else got than what you already have.

He came at night, careful not to be seen. He was a respected religious leader, and Jesus was still controversial.

John 3 shows Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of the Jewish ruling council, coming to Jesus privately, admitting he knows Jesus is from God because of the signs He’s performed.

Jesus’s answer is unexpected: “unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Nicodemus, a man who had spent his life studying religious law, is confused by something so foundational it can’t be earned through study or status — it has to be received, like a birth, not achieved like an accomplishment.

Sometimes the people who know the most about God are the ones who most need to be reminded that knowing about Him was never the same as being made new by Him.

What would it look like to approach faith less like something to master and more like something to receive?

Nothing in God's calendar is random.
The day the Holy Spirit came wasn't chosen by chance. It happened on Pentecost—the Feast of Weeks, exactly fifty days after Passover. A celebration of firstfruits became the day God gathered the first harvest of believers through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Old Testament wasn't replaced—it was fulfilled.

His face shone like the sun. His clothes became as white as light. Then Moses and Elijah appeared beside Him, talking.

Matthew 17 describes Jesus taking Peter, James, and John up a mountain, where His appearance is suddenly, briefly transformed before them — a glimpse of glory usually hidden behind the ordinary human form He’d taken on. A voice from heaven confirms: “This is my beloved Son… listen to him.”

Peter, overwhelmed, wants to build shelters and stay on the mountain. But Jesus leads them back down, back to the crowds, back to the work still ahead.

Mountaintop moments aren’t given so we can stay there. They’re given to remind us who we’re following once we’re back in the valley.
