Four Officers Honoured for Exceptional Performance in Customs Airport Cargo Command
..As Comptroller Awe Reaffirms CGC’s Dedication to Recognition

Comptroller Michael Awe, in charge of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Cargo (MMIAC) Command, has recognised four officers for their excellent performance in executing their duties.

The officers were honoured during a parade at the Command on Wednesday, 11 September 2024.

Addressing the Officers and men of the Command, the CAC stated that the recognition, which will be done monthly or quarterly, is part of the CGC's commitment to rewarding hardworking officers.

"There are four officers here, each representing one month from May to August 2024, who will be given letters of recognition today. The letters have reached the Office of the Zonal Coordinator, and he will send them to headquarters," the CAC said.

Regarding the Command's revenue generation efforts, Comptroller Awe noted that more than N16 billion has been collected so far. He appreciated the senior officers for their support, acknowledging that this success could not have been achieved alone.

The recognised officers include CSC Itinu Jimoh, CSC Moses Aboki, SC Jidda Aliyu, and IC Sanni Mohammed.

The officers expressed their excitement and gratitude to the CAC for recognising their efforts.

According to CSC Aboki, "The CAC has assured us that we do not need to harbour any fears. Henceforth, we will conduct more thorough examinations, as it is through this that we can detect illicit or underpaid items."

The parade concluded with a free eye test provided by Poise Eye Care Limited.

NIGERIA CUSTOMS SERVICE BOARD CONFIRMS APPOINTMENT OF 2 DCGs, 5 ACGs, APPROVES THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NEW ICT DEPARTMENT

1. The Nigeria Customs Service Board (NCSB) in its 60th Regular Meeting on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, confirmed the appointment of two (2) Deputy Comptroller-Generals of Customs (DCGs) and five (5) Assistant Comptroller-Generals of Customs (ACGs). The meeting, chaired by the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, was held at the new corporate headquarters of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Maitama, Abuja.

2. The newly confirmed appointments as Deputy Comptroller-Generals of Customs (DCGs) are OA Alajogun and KI Adeola. While Assistant Comptroller Generals are IG Umar, MM Tilley-Gyado, BA Makinde, OA Salefu and T Bomodi. The appointments were made in response to the statutory retirement of senior officers and are in full alignment with the Federal Character Policy, as outlined in Section 14(4) of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023.

3. In addition, the Board approved the resolution from its 59th Regular Meeting held on May 14, 2024, to upgrade the ICT Unit to a full-fledged department. This strategic upgrade is vital to the ongoing modernisation efforts within the NCS.

4. Similarly, DCG KI ADEOLA has been appointed as the substantive Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of the newly upgraded ICT-Modernisation Department. She will be supported by an Assistant Comptroller-General and five (5) Comptrollers to ensure the successful implementation of ICT initiatives aimed at enhancing the Service’s operational efficiency and digital transformation.

5. The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, extended his congratulations to the newly appointed. He emphasized the need for them to double their efforts in carrying out the critical roles of revenue generation, trade facilitation, and the suppression of smuggling to bolster Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

PRESS CONFERENCE ADDRESSED BY THE COMPTROLLER-GENERAL OF CUSTOMS, BASHIR ADEWALE ADENIYI, MFR, ON THE SEIZURES OF ILLICIT GOODS BY NIGERIA CUSTOMS SERVICE, AREA 2 COMMAND, ONNE, HELD IN SEPTEMBER 2024

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Press, Officers of the Nigeria Customs Service, Distinguished Stakeholders, and Fellow Nigerians,

1. Earlier today, I had joined numerous stakeholders to take a significant step towards the cause of trade facilitation through the inauguration of upgraded facilities provided by the WACT, Onne. As I express delight that trade facilitation is getting traction in Onne Port, I cannot help but call your attention to a grave concern. This has to do with the repeated incidents of national security breaches unfolding in Onne Port. I appreciate your presence, as we all have a shared responsibility in safeguarding our national security.

2. As we are all aware, the policy thrust of Mr. President supports the re-energizing of our business environment to drive faster import clearance and grow our capacity for exports. Our emphasis has been to promote initiatives that speaks to Trade facilitation and economic development. It is a matter of regret that criminal elements in the international supply chain are exploiting our pro-trade stance to commit atrocities bordering on national security breaches.
3. The attempts to test our will through the importation of dangerous cargo through this port has necessitated the declaration of a state of emergency in Onne Port. Coming on the heel of a seizure of a huge cache of arms couple of months ago, it is disheartening that perpetrators have not backed down on their illegal acts.

4. Recent intelligence and seizures have revealed a disturbing trend; Onne Port is increasingly being used as a destination for dangerous and illicit cargo. The scale and nature of these illegal importations pose a significant threat to our national security and the health of our citizens.

5. Today, we are here to showcase yet another series of significant seizures made by the diligent officers of the Area 2 Command. On display are twelve (12) containers of illicit goods intercepted through a combination of intelligence gathering, inter-agency collaboration, and meticulous physical examination.

5. Seizures on Display:
One (1) x 40-feet container: Containing 4,800 pairs of military/paramilitary camouflage rain boots and 67,320 pairs of various rubber footwear, with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦923,040,000.
Three (3) x 40-feet containers: Containing 562,600 bottles of 100ml cough syrup with codeine and 3,150 pieces of chilly cutters, with a DPV of ₦4,716,573,846.
Three (3) x 40-feet containers: Containing 380,000 bottles of 100ml cough syrup with codeine, 24,480,000 tablets of Royal Tramadol Hydrochloride, 5,350,000 tablets of Tapentadol and Carisoprodol, and other items, with a DPV of ₦17,432,506,000.
Five (5) x 40-feet containers: Containing 892,400 bottles of 100ml cough syrup with codeine, 1,300,000 tablets of 50mg Really Extra Diclofenac, 7,250,000 tablets of 5mg Trodol Benzhexol, and other items, with a DPV of ₦8,128,568,295.90.

6. These interceptions bring the total Duty Paid Value of the 12 seized containers to a staggering ₦31,200,688,142. This operation is not only a testament to the Area 2 Command's vigilance but also to the effectiveness of our intelligence network and the critical partnerships we maintain with other security agencies.

7. I want to emphasize that this is not just a Customs issue – it is a national security concern that affects every Nigerian. We are therefore calling on all patriotic citizens to assist us in this crucial endeavor. We need your help in providing intelligence regarding those behind these nefarious acts and their intentions. Your information, no matter how small, could be the key to preventing a potential catastrophe. Therefore, effective immediately, we are implementing emergency protocols at Onne Port. For the next three months, we will be conducting thorough examinations of all suspected containers. If the owners do not come forward for examination, we will open these containers to verify their contents. This is a temporary but necessary measure to clean up the port and restore its integrity.

8. I want to assure the business community and legitimate importers that this measure is not aimed at disrupting lawful trade. Our goal is to create a safer, more secure environment for genuine business activities to thrive. We will work to ensure that lawful shipments are processed as quickly and efficiently as possible during this period. To those who may be tempted to continue these illegal activities, let me be clear: the Nigeria Customs Service, in collaboration with other security agencies, will bring the full weight of the law upon anyone found complicit in these crimes against our nation.

9. I would like to express my deep appreciation to the officers of the Port Harcourt Area 2 Command for their relentless efforts in safeguarding our nation. Your dedication to duty and your commitment to the fight against smuggling are commendable, and I want to assure you that your efforts do not go unnoticed.

10. These seizures were made in strict compliance with customs laws, particularly concerning concealment, false declaration, and the importation of prohibited items. The illegal pharmaceuticals, including cough syrup and tramadol, will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in accordance with our Memorandum of Understanding, while the other items will be dealt with as per the legal frameworks governing our activities.

11. As we move forward, I want to reiterate our commitment to continuing this momentum. The Nigeria Customs Service, under my leadership, will leave no stone unturned in our mission to protect the health and safety of Nigerians. We will strengthen our intelligence networks, enhance our inter-agency collaborations, and ensure that those who seek to harm our nation face the full weight of the law.

12. In conclusion, I want to assure all Nigerians that the Nigeria Customs Service will continue to be a formidable force in the fight against smuggling and the illegal importation of harmful goods. We will remain steadfast in our duties to ensure that our nation remains a safe place for all to thrive.

Comptroller Morenikeji Assures Sustenance of Collaboration with FRSC

Comptroller Morenikeji Bewaji, in charge of the Ondo/Ekiti Customs Area Command, on Thursday, 29 August 2024, in Akure, the command headquarters reiterated the service's commitment to working with relevant sister agencies.

During a familiarisation visit by the newly posted Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander, Samuel Ibitoye, to the Command, the CAC expressed optimism to collaborate with FRSC which is a key component of the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi's policy thrust.

She assured the newly posted sector commander of her unwavering and increased support to achieve both agencies’ mandates.

In response, the FRSC Corps Commander Ibitoye requested the repositioning of the operational capacity of both agencies in the state.

Reacting, Comptroller Bewaji conveyed her pleasure that the FRSC and other sister agencies have realised that one tree does not make a forest and are now uniting to build on each other's strengths to accomplish unique objectives.

She encouraged the sector commander to maintain the spirit he exhibited upon his arrival in the state.
