5th Nigerian States IGR Awards 2024

FCT AND RIVERS ARE SLUGGING IT OUT FOR THE NO. 2 POSITION AFTER LAGOS

Here are the top 12 Nigerian states in internally generated revenue (IGR) in 2023.

1. Lagos N815,864,679,971

2. FCT N211,100,288,136

3. Rivers N195,414,581,585

4. Ogun N146,875,041,475

5. Delta N114,088,309,225

6. Edo N64,671,497,3627

7. Kaduna N62,490,117,635

8. Kwara N59,642,678,120

9. Oyo N52,745,497,059

10. Akwa Ibom N43,184,024,627

11. Ondo N41,501,551,387

12. Kano N37,379,619,998

FCT overtook Rivers in 2021. Rivers took back the second position in 2023. And FCT has once again flipped it in 2023.

Four among these 12 states are in the South West zone: Lagos, Ogun, Oyo and Ondo. Lagos is the permanent leader in IGR amongst Nigeria's 37 subnationals. I don't see any rival to it in the foreseeable future. Maybe in the next 1-2 decades, FCT might become a strong contender with Lagos in IGR. Who knows!

Another four among these 12 states are in the South-South zone: Rivers, Delta, Edo and Akwa Ibom. Edo's IGR performance over the years is quite impressive considering that it doesn't receive the huge 13% derivation funds goes to its South-South sister states: Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa.

North Central zone is represented in this top 12 list by FCT and Kwara, while North West has Kaduna and Kano amongst them. None of the states of the South East zone (Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo) and the North East zone (Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe) made it into this top 12 league in 2023.

My Own Take

IN THIS DIGITAL AGE, AVOID PROBLEMATIC BRAND NAMES

I came across a company online this morning with the name, TWELVE, and I googled it. In my first search I drew blank. I needed to add TECH to the name for Google to pop it up. The name TWELVE for a brand is a problematic one in this digital age. When majority of humans see it, they immediately think that you are talking about the number 12! You complicate things for Google Search because, by default, it would pop up TWLEVE as the name of the number 12, and not the name of a company.

This was also my reasoning concerning Twitter when, upon purchasing the company, Mr. Elon Musk changed its name to X. Guess what, people are compelled to write X and then put in parenthesis (formerly known as Twitter). Why put the consumer out there through this unnecessary stress? Musk as a matter of fact threw away his company's name (worth more than gold in branding power), replacing it with a trashy one. I guess he did it, all in an attempt to look and sound cool. So sorry Elon. All you needed to have done was to bounce the idea of replacing TWITTER with X off someone out there who knows a thing or two about branding.

And by the way, the best name for your brand today should sound like the name of a person: Guinness, Honda, Mercedes Benz, Dangote, etc. If possible, choose an English-sounding name. You know the reason for this, don't you? English is the most popular (and most preferred) language of netizens today. Even Chinese and Indian folks (countries that dwarf the UK in population) would readily anglicize their names as soon as they think global.

Still on this subject, you might want to look up the name that we chose for our own company back in 2014 when we incorporated it: www.alfordevents.com.

YOU TOO CAN JOIN OUR NATIONWIDE CAMPAIGN TODAY

The annual Nigeria Food Surplus Summit is the central pillar of a 10 years nationwide advocacy that started in June 2024, aimed at helping Nigeria to successfully transition from a net importer of food and agricultural products and services to a net exporter of them. In the next 10 years (2024-2033), we envision that hundreds of well-established commercial farms and food processing companies will spring up in majority of the 774 LGAs of Nigeria, encouraged by the federal and state governments, and financially supported by commercial banks and other lenders.

FACILITY TOUR OF NIJI GROUP IN IBADAN, OYO STATE, TODAY

My tour of NIJI Group (Niji Foods) in Ibadan, Oyo State, today is a continuation of my nationwide tour of the leading agribusiness companies and organizations in Nigeria, the major commercial bank lenders to the Nigerian agricultural industry, and the ministry of agriculture of the FCT and the 36 states of Nigeria. I am undertaking these visits as part of our nationwide awareness campaign titled, "SURPLUS FOOD IN NIGERIA." This is a national advocacy championed voluntarily by our company, Alford Conferences Limited (Alford Events), to help Nigeria to transition from being a net importer of food and agricultural products and services to a net exporter of them. We believe that this national aspiration can be translated into reality in the next 10 years.

Within this period, 2024-2024, we want food to become very surplus in Nigeria; for the country to be able to feed itself adequately and have a large surplus for export. We are taking a cue from the Netherlands, the 2nd largest agribusiness exporter in the world today, next to United States. The annual Nigeria Food Surplus Summit is one of the major initiatives towards driving this aspiration to fruition.

As I interacted with Engr. Kolawole Adeniji, the Founder & CEO of Niji Group today, I was even more reassured about my decision to help to champion this national aspiration. I'll talk about this agro-industrial group during the weekend. I am pleased to invite you, as an individual or an organization, to join Alford Conferences Limited and REVENUE Magazine, our web-based publication to help drive this lofty national food campaign. You can participate in this summit, slated for November 20-22, 2024 in Abuja as a partner, sponsor, exhibitor, and delegate. Download the event participation brochure on www.alfordevents.com and register today. There's still a room for a discount on the participation rates if you do so by latest October 31, 2024.

WHICH NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES HAVE MADE A STRONG MARK IN AGRIBUSINESS WITHIN THEIR CAMPUS?

In the South West Zone, our picks are Afe Babalola University of Ado Ekiti (ABUAD), Ekiti State. The other three are Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, Ogun State; University of Ibadan, Oyo State; and Federal University of Technology Akure, Ondo State.

ABUAD Farms includes 110,000 mango trees, 500,000 teak trees, 500,000 melaina trees, 600,000 moringa trees and 600 fish ponds., all worked by dozens of hands-on personnel. Its moringa factory produces soap, body cream and capsule (to mention just three), from the “miracle plant”; a mango-processing unit makes mango chips, and has its eyes on the export market; an equally busy feed mill serves the needs of the farm’s livestock and as well as those outside it. Chief Afe Babalola, the octogenarian founder of the school said, “We have the biggest university agricultural enterprise in Africa.”

We shall be honouring these four universities with the NIGERIAN AGRIBUSINESS UNIVERSITY AWARDS at the forthcoming 1st Nigeria Food Surplus Summit, slated for November 20-22, 2024 in Abuja, FCT. Four other universities from the other five zones of the country will be similarly honoured and celebrated at the event.

The annual Nigeria Food Surplus Summit is the central pillar of a 10 years nationwide advocacy that started in June 2024, aimed at helping Nigeria to successfully transition from a net importer of food and agricultural products and services to a net exporter of them.

Download the event participation brochure from www.alfordevents.com to read more about this event coming up in the next two months. To sign up as a summit partner, sponsor, exhibitor, speaker, delegate, etc, please contact our hotline & Whatsapp +2348030635853.

REVENUE MAGAZINE DESIGNATES 72 ORGANIZATIONS AS
THE ENGINE ROOM TO TRANSFORM AGRIBUSINESS IN NIGERIA

In pursuance of its vision to help transform the country from a net importer of agricultural products and services to a net exporter of them, REVENUE Magazine, the official publication of the annual Nigeria Food Surplus Summit, has designated 72 persons/organizations and tagged them the “Agribusiness Nigeria Engine Room.”

These 72 persons/organizations are the Hon. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, the Hon. Minister of State of the ministry, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL Plc), Bank of Agriculture (BOA), Bank of Industry (BOI), Nigerian Export Import Bank (NEXIM), Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC), National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), and National Orientation Agency (NOA). The commissioner of agriculture of the 37 subnationals of Nigeria form the core of this engine room. They are in a vantage position to collectively drive the three key areas of our vision: commercial farming on a large scale across each of the 774 local government areas (LGAs) of the country; food processing by companies of various sizes (mega, big, medium and small); and manufacturing and supply of agricultural tractors and other farm machinery. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) are part of the engine room too.

This VIP list also includes the CEO of the commercial banks that are the biggest lenders to the Nigerian agricultural industry during the five years period 2018-2022. There are 12 of such banks designated by REVENUE Magazine for the forthcoming 1st Nigeria Food Surplus Summit slated for November 20-22, 2024 in Abuja: Access Holdings, Zenith Bank, Ecobank Nigeria, UBA Group, GTCO Holdings, FCMB Group, Sterling Holdings, Fidelity Bank, FBN Holdings, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Union Bank, and Wema Bank.

We have added three other persons to list: the Founder/CEO of Bobtrack Tractor Limited, the first indigenous manufacturer of agricultural tractors; the President of Standup for Women Society (SWS), a leading women empowerment organization that has graciously partnered with us for the forthcoming summit; and the Director-General of International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Ibadan, a leading agricultural research centre in Nigeria.
