Redeeming the Nigerian State: Imperatives for the Youth

By Comrade Japhet Philip

Let us begin to dispense with the conception that the project called Nigeria is faced with a plethora of issues at the moment. Endemic youth unemployment (currently at 25.20%), insecurity, economic stagnation, poverty, illiteracy and disease, avarice, nepotism and the culture of impunity amongst character stricken and ideologically bereft leaders, impoverished, uninformed and complacent followership, corruption, exclusion, social injustice and all other characteristics of a failed state have become common place in this once economically, socially and politically viable nation. From the foregoing, there is no gainsaying the fact that there is indeed danger ahead of us, hence the need for redemption if we must tame the deficit and restore our dear country from the current social, economic and political morass, to the path of recovery, growth, stability and shared prosperity.
Permit me to make an attempt to diagnose, analyze and to do a prognosis of the problem with Nigeria, doing so i strongly believe will help us understand the negative narratives bedeviling us as a people and to focus on finding workable solutions to those myriad of issues with a view to salvaging our country from imminent collapse, a task that must be done now. So i ask; where did we go wrong in our journey to nationhood? What must we do to get to the promise land? A land where all and sundry will be free from fear and terror, free from hunger, illiteracy, poverty and disease, where justice and truth shall prevail.
Suffice to say that there are several schools of thought as to why we have found ourselves in the current abyss; some say that it is the failure of leadership as Prof Chinua Achebe of blessed memory would succinctly capture in his book titled: The Trouble with Nigeria, others posit that religion and ethnicity are the problem, to some it is the hydra-headed corruption that has regrettably become the hallmark of our governance and national life amongst many. While those different opinions and positions about our challenges are cogent and true, I make bold to add that chunk of the problem lie with us the followership, majority of our country men and women are complacent when it comes to issues of national development. We suffer not only because our leaders lack discipline and are intellectually poor, but also because we have thrown our values to the winds, we have placed much premium on things that divide us rather than things that unite us; above all, we have failed as a people to hold our leaders accountable and in this instance the youths who account for the larger percentage of state population and in whose hands the future rests are to a greater extent responsible.
Throughout the course of history, successful nations have had to rely on leaders with discipline, vision, intelligence, character and charisma to make their societies work. Genghis Khan the Mongoloid leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, the Corsican, Lee kuan Yew of Singapore, Thomas Sankara of Burkina Faso, Alexander the Great, the Greek, Patrice Lumumba of DR Congo, the highly revered Ottoman emperor, Suleiman the magnificent, Charles de Gaulle, Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela amongst many all showed and applied those attributes of greatness and vision in building their nations, today their influence in world history cannot be diminished. Albeit Nigeria have had its own fair share of such great leaders in the persons of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Sunday Awoniyi amongst others, their visions and ideologies were never allowed to thrive, our inability to sustain the legacies of those heroes past marked the beginning of our troubles and i hope we will be sober enough to reflect on this moving forward.
From the foregoing, it is my considered opinion that over the years, the quality of leadership and by implication followership have continued to dwindle, this for me is a pointer to the current state of our nation, an authentication of the idea that no society can rise above the level of its leaders.
Our major trouble on the journey to nationhood in my view began with the attempted coup de etat of January 15, 1966 as staged by some dissident junior army officers mainly from the Eastern Region, that not only saw to the assassination of the federal prime minister and some key northern and southwestern political and military leaders but also led to the collapse of the First Republic and sowed the seed of discord, nepotism, retrogression and socio-political instability in Nigeria. The countercoup and its attendant civil war which lasted from 1967 to 1970 mainly to avert the secession of ‘’Biafra’’ was traumatic and it has proved to be the major trauma in Nigerian history, this profoundly impacted the military and by extension the civilian culture of Nigeria. These events helped to fan the embers of ethnic bigotry and deeply entrenched the challenge of national unity, Alas! Our failure to address the issues that led to the war and to define the basis of our existence as a people after the needless war are still bedeviling our national life, the recurring agitations for ‘’secession’’ and ‘’restructuring’’ strongly suggests that the end of those inherent problems associated with perceived feelings of marginalization and exclusion from active participation in governance which are deeply rooted along ethnic, religious and regional lines is not yet in sight.
Our challenge worsened in the 1980s when petroleum revenues began pouring in the face of half-baked financial institutions and lax legal institutions, a situation that facilitated the rapid development of high-level cultures of corruption when state governors could shape budget and ‘’off-budget’’ expenditures to their liking and could also gain access to international financial loans with little or no accountability. This paved way for the entrenchment of a culture of money-bag politics and leadership became the entitlement of the rich and strong; of people who had no agenda for their country but rather see leadership as an opportunity to feather their nests. And up until this moment, we are still faced with same challenge and must liberate our people from it.

Going by our demographics, the youths constitute the larger portion of our population and so have a central role to play in the crusade for a better Nigeria.
As young Nigerians, Our preoccupation now should be to redeem our once great country where ordinary citizens can live in freedom, peace and security, where their humanity more than their religion will be the basis for their acceptance, where citizens will be judged by the content of their character and not their ethnic extraction, region or political affiliation.
To do this, I will like to suggest the following actions on our parts as young Nigerian citizens.
1. RE-ORIENT YOUR VALUES
The moral standard of behavior in every society is what defines it. There exist a nexus between the moral conduct of individuals, families, communities and institutions in a given society and how well that society works. We cannot build and sustain a prosperous nation without the practical application of values such as honesty, justice, good faith, hard work, love, integrity, transparency, accountability and respect for the dignity of lives. Our values as a nation has been eroded and we need to re-orient. Until there is a moral restructuring of our minds as a people we will continue to chase shadows. The Nigerian youth must get it right morally, for us to achieve genuine change we must break away from corruption, greed, impunity, injustice and all other forms of immoral conduct.

2. SEEK KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND WISDOM
Knowledge is power and its application is wisdom. No individual or nation can prosper in life without knowledge. Knowledge is a powerful factor that empower people achieve great results and a society or community that is devoid of knowledge will always be backward and will wallow in perpetual poverty. It is the application of knowledge that has led man to the path of progress. To redeem our nation from its present state, we must seek knowledge, skills and have the right attitude to nation building. Readers are leaders!

3. RE-ORIENT YOUR IDENTITY
As a Nigerian youth you must ask yourself the question WHO AM I? Many a youth in Nigeria bear stronger allegiance to their ethnic, religious, regional and political affiliations rather than to the state and this is a RED FLAG! We must deliberately de-emphasize things that divide us and uphold those things that unite us. We must see ourselves as Nigerians rather than Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba, Christians or Muslims, Northerners or Southerners, members of APC, PDP etc. We must do away with our divides and work together in unison with a common identity as Nigerian youth.

4. UTILIZE THE POWER OF ASSOCIATION
The essence of humanity is solidarity. The Nigerian youths must start a movement. We need to network and build strong alliances if we must reposition our country to the path of progress and liberate our people from oppression. No man is an island, no man succeeds alone. Collective wisdom works better than individual one. An injury to one is an injury to all. We must break away from the Someone Else’s Problem (SEP) syndrome and work together for the common good. Start a movement NOW!

5. GET INVOLVED
Active and meaningful participation in governance is a must do for the Nigerian youth. We must begin to tell truth to power by openly challenging bad government policies and programs and demand accountability and transparency from our leaders. We must begin to challenge strong individuals and strive to build strong institutions. We must join and build political parties that are driven by ideologies rather than penchant for self- preservation and aggrandizement. Above all, the Nigerian youth must break away from being a tool in the hands of corrupt and self-serving politicians and like their counterparts in civilized climes run for office and assume the role of leadership.

CONCLUSION
‘’This is the most important and crucial periods of your lives, for what you do now and what you decide now at this age may well determine which way your life shall go. And the question is whether you have a proper, a solid and a sound blueprint. And I want to suggest some of the things that should be in your life’s blueprint. Number one in your life’s blueprint should be a deep belief in your own dignity, your own worth and your own somebodiness, don’t allow anybody to make you feel that you are nobody. Always feel that you count, always feel that you have worth and always feel that your life has ultimate significance’’ Martin Luther King Jr

BEFORE FAROOQ KPEROGI’S YELLOW JOURNALISM SET NIGERIA ON FIRE — Maiwada Dammallam

“I live in a country where I don’t have to worry about electricity and other basic necessities of life. My kids go to the best schools for free. I have a permanent, lifetime, tenured employment with no retirement age, and can choose to live here for the rest of my life because my children won't even go back to Nigeria.” — Farooq Kperogi

Me:

But for the misfortune of knowing the existence of this oaf courtesy of the social media, I will die believing it’s infinitely impossible for an idiot to be a professor. Beside believing life begins and ends with living in America, this fool is under a rather funny impression that Nigerians who are dignified to remain and toil to build Nigeria are less smart than ingrates like him who have no problem getting the best from Nigeria only to abandon it when it matters the most. Not even the fact that most freeborn citizens will never swap their citizenship with a privileged life of “electricity and best schools for the kids” as 2nd class citizens. Idiots like Kperogi could easily find find very comfortable, the option of being neither fish nor fowl. This fool will die trying not to be a Nigerian and doomed never to be the American he’s convinced is the greatest one could get from life.

So damn what if Kperogi’s life ambition is to be an American and as far away from Nigeria as the a Jet could carry him! Good spirited Nigerians, those grateful for being schooled with proceeds from Nigeria’s resources and the hard labour of its founding fathers will gladly raise money to charter Spacecrafts to evacuate the likes of Kperogi to planets of their choices even if for the minimum consideration of allowing patriotic Nigerians committed to the idea of building a functional country a little room to be more practical rather than the theoretical hopefuls sophisticated idiots like Kperogi are insisting.

Having said that, what’s Kperogi’s obsession with Nigeria if he has made his choice and the choice is America? Are we asking for too much from this accidental marital discharge to allow those who are yet to see the heaven he’s seeing in America to remain in peace and concentrate on building a country they will be proud of — a country that will offer the next generation enough comfort to resist the unpalatable option of the allure of self-imposed slavery? And this fool is yet to even understand that USA is never a permanent home but a temporary abode to treacherous idiots like him subject to periodic re-evaluation which terms are determined by exigencies of the moment. If Kperogi like, let him turn green to compliment his green card, he will forever remain a guest in the USA.

Now that Kperogi has made his status very clear, I think it’s time our security agencies begin to deal with him as they will a foreigner who has reasonably proven himself a clear danger to the peace of Nigeria. I’m sure there’s more to Kperogi’s Facebook post on his wall in which he claimed President Buhari has killed Col. Sambo Dasuki while under a lawful government custody. I don’t believe a “professor of journalism” — even a “SUEGBE” like Kperogi — could fail the assess the possible consequences of such unreasonable propagation dangerous of falsehood.

In the usual manner he feeds gullible Nigerians seditious lies, Kperogi claimed a “reliable source” informed him of the death of Col. Dasuki and that the “vindictive, bloodthirsty” President Buhari and his inner circle have decided to conceal the story until after the election. Kperogi concluded his inciting post with a call for civil disobedience. In his words: “Well, I’ve done my bit to call attention to the evil fraud this man (Buhari) represents. It’s up to Nigerians who live in Nigeria to either confront him or live with his evil.”

Considering it was a highly charged period of election, it’s agreeable that after losing all hope of pulling President Buhari down using his skills and contacts as a journalist, Kperogi has resorted to use an easier option of manipulating the sentiments of gullible Nigerians to incite them and provoke deadly riots using the volatility of the election period as a convenient tool. The reality is, Kperogi’s“reliable source” which he relied on to write and publish the inciting post under review was nothing more than an undated and unverifiable audio clip that’s there in the phone of any average social media user.

It’s inconceivable that a journalist, a professor of journalism at that, could go this low to fabricate and publish for public consumption, stories that could easily stimulate public sentiments and possibly precipitate an o**y of violence which magnitude is unimaginable. It’s my candid opinion that Kperogi’s deliberate idiocy should be handled with the seriousness it deserve. The USA he proudly flashes at every given opportunity as his earthly heaven will sure disapprove of his constant display of rude and insensitive kind of professionalism. I’m sure there are laws that could be exploited to check if not to reinvent this do**us.

So this 👇is all that the Dubai jamboree could come up with? Kai!

EXCLUSIVE!!!

Resolutions of PDP Presidential Campaign Strategy Meeting Held in Dubai, chaired by Alhaji Abubakar Atiku

The Blueprint-

1. Spread negative and false news relating to the VP, Prof Osinbajo, who is the main poster child of the administration and the most vocal opponent of the PDP. His continuous branding of PDP as corrupt and our ideas in restructuring as insincere must be nipped in the bud. His visits to markets and the populist imagery he is creating must be tackled vigorously. We must put him on the back foot. It is important to destroy his character ahead of the elections because of the favourable perception that many Nigerians have of him, his capacity and the programs and also to reduce the South West support. His Christian character must be impugned and maligned seriously. He also seems to have a formidable backroom team that counters our media offensive. This must be weakened.

It is also important to address the danger that is inherent in the Social Investment Programmes that Osinbajo promotes. Recall how our effort to utilise our social media trolls 3 weeks ago to discredit the N-Power program backfired. We must devise measures to brand N-Power, Trader Moni and School Feeding as fraudulent and incompetent.

Tactics
* Opposition research to discredit him, his family, his faith and programs.
* Commission moles and other agents to dig up dirt on subject.
* Utilise the National Assembly to undertake series of investigations to discredit him and his programs (particularly the Social Investments Program).
* Create Core content for dissemination across channels which will include fake news and blown-up headlines to portray subject as corrupt
* Utilise our retained media to disseminate core content and messages in the next 6 weeks on mainstream, social media, WhatsApp and by SMS
* Send talking points to our spokespeople and all PDP ambassadors on the subject.
* Attack all media protagonists/ influencers including the likes of Omojuwa, Ogundamisi, etc
* Enlist more social media influencers for this effort.

2. Brand President Buhari and the APC as an Islamist party- Brand him as nepotistic and divisive. The PDP has to ratchet up fake news about the herdsmen crisis as an islamisation tool. This will be meticulously distributed in the North Central, South West, South South and South East.

Tactics
* Research to create more fearful, threatening and emotive narratives
* Create core content to include graphic videos and photographs to drive home the point
* Disseminate through church leadership, town union leadership, artisan and market associations leadership and other groups
* Utilise our retained media to disseminate core content and messages where appropriate.
* Send talking points to our spokespeople and all PDP ambassadors on the subject.

3. Poverty versus Prosperity Narrative- We must subliminally convey that PDP allows things to flow within the economy while APC has locked up the system. A key message is to say abundance in the system is better than scarcity. An aspect of this message is to say that corruption is not our main problem, rather it is the scarcity that APC has created.

Tactics
* Research to create more fearful economic narratives
* Create core content
* Disseminate through all media channels
* Disseminate through own union leadership, artisan and market associations leadership and other groups
* Utilise our retained media including influencers to disseminate core content and messages.
* Send talking points to our spokespeople and all PDP ambassadors on the subject.

4. Claims of Infrastructure Completion- We must keep saying we started and had almost finished paying for all the infrastructure they are laying claim to.

Tactics
* Create core content
* Disseminate through our media channels
* Utilise our retained media to disseminate core content and messages
* Send talking points to our spokespeople and all PDP ambassadors on the subject.

NASS 2⃣0⃣1⃣9⃣:In the face of temporary setbacks, let us not despair.

🙏A moment of appreciation, admonition and encouragement.

Dear fellow compatriots in Tangale Waja and beyond,

Without the necessity of mincing words, I would like to seize this moment to express my heartfelt appreciation to all men and women of goodwill in my constituency (Balanga/Billiri Federal Constituency), my family, friends and teeming supporters worldwide for the confidence you repose in me, for your support towards my aspiration to give our constituency and Nigeria a people oriented and quality representation in the lower chamber of the National Assembly. I am deeply grateful and greatly indebted to you all.
Nonetheless, we have come a to point where we can no longer continue with the aspiration for some reason which many of us believe is in the best interest of not only our constituency but the Nigerian democratic process. The decision to halt our movement is in solidarity with many a Nigerian of good moral rectitude and competence who would have loved to run for office in order to contribute their quota in bettering the lot of the people and to deepen our democracy through good governance but are not able to do so at the moment owing to the high cost of expression of interest and nomination forms being charged by the ruling All Progressives Congress. We strongly believe that the benchmark for the leadership recruitment process should be more about competence and character rather than financial muscle. What the APC have asked would-be leaders to pay now in order to participate in the coming primaries for elective positions at all levels in the name of raising funds for logistics is simply unreasonable, it is untenable, scandalous, exorbitant and unjustifiable. It is not youth and women friendly and can only serve the purpose of exclusion. This is definitely not the way to go as doing so can only produce in most cases desperate and corrupt leaders who will at every slight opportunity dip their hands into the public till to the peril of the people. For me and many others who share my ideology, this is an aberration, it is an anomaly and a circumvention of the letters and principles of true democracy and should be challenged by all and sundry if we must tame the deficit and make genuine progress.

In all of these daunting but surmountable challenges dear brothers and sisters, i urge us all not to despair but to look to the future with hope and determination as this is not in any way the last page in our collective struggle and journey to a better Tangale Waja, Gombe state and Nigeria, but a temporary setback which i am confident we shall overcome as we continue to challenge the anomalies that bedevil our political space and governance system.
I shall continue to avail myself for service both in the now and the near future believing that together we can liberate our people from the shackles of poverty, oppression and political exclusion.

Thank you.
Yours in the struggle for a better Nigeria,

Comrade Japhet Philip La'abes
