120,000 Gas-Powered Vehicles to Begin Operations to Ease Transportation for Nigerians
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and state governors have agreed to take urgent steps to reduce transportation fares across Nigeria, with the aim of ensuring that citizens begin benefiting from cheaper transport services from October 1, 2026.
The plan will focus on expanding the use of vehicles powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles, which have lower operating costs compared to petrol-powered vehicles.
Tinubu said vehicles powered by CNG can reduce fuel costs by between 60 and 80 percent compared to vehicles running on petrol.
The President disclosed that more than 120,000 vehicles have already been converted to run on CNG, while over 100,000 additional conversion kits are currently being produced.
He also directed the construction of 500 additional CNG refuelling stations, which will bring the planned total number of stations across the country to 1,000.
Tinubu said the Federal Government and state governments will establish a joint committee to begin implementing the measures. He stressed that the savings from cheaper fuel should directly translate into lower transportation fares, especially for commuters travelling within states..
