LAM’S LETTER TO THE BELOVED
A veil flashed open, and in a tumbling cloud emerged a familiar figure, tall, fair, handsome but young. Draped in a flowing white gown, and floating as if tossed by the heavenly wind, the atmosphere evidences a saintly peace. In the serenity of the flashing moment echoed a fiery voice, unmistakably reassuring. It was Lam’s, the Great Lam.
‘Son, despair not for Allah is always with the truthful and the just’. Take this message and spread it as far as you can. It is my testament, to guide and guard you in tempestuous moments, to reawaken you when you slumber, to remind you when you forget, to reassure you when you are despondent, to fortify you when you are assaulted and to correct you when you make mistake. It is nothing that you have never heard before, I have always shared them with you, and I lived by them. But alas, man is a forgetful being!
As I unfold my hands to receive the document enclosed in a golden envelop bound in a red ribbon in a design of love, my entire frame crackle with trepidation and awe as the figure flashing a broad angelic smile slowly ascend in a graceful slide into a billowing cloud hanging overhead waving contentedly in a manner suggestive that ‘I have said my own’.
With trembling hands in a trance-like motion, I carefully opened the envelope and began to read:
Dear Beloved,
It is with mixed feelings that I write you this letter and it is my hope that the content of this letter will educate you and others about what I stood for should anyone be in doubt. I am glad because with my transition into this other life, I have found indescribable joy and comfort that was promised those who truly believe and do good deeds on earth. It is a promised kept. However, I am saddened by the filtering news about the abyss into which our party is sinking since my transition from the earthly abode. Know ye that no one shall live forever, hence the need for the living to live good before they become like us. It is an immutable law that to each according to his deeds, and as it is it on earth so it is in heaven. Life however, is for the living!
I wish to thank those who made my passage a befitting one, particularly my political colleagues, including those who crossed the political divide to honour me. The fact that you were able to celebrate my exit with such pomp and pageantry should tell you that this other life is a happy one for me. To my family, both nuclear and extended political family, I say a very big thank you. May the mercy and protection of Almighty God be upon you. The prayers and offerings of thousands have been salutary and I breathe the air of all supplications in their soothing pleasure. The prayers and supplications are the best gifts I received and continue to receive in this glorious castle of peace and comfort.
In my sojourn on earth which now seems like a flicker, I bore so many disappointments, betrayal, treachery and unimaginable perfidy with such equanimity that many of you thought me as a weakling but for the love you had for me. But what an elder sees while sitting, a child may not see even by climbing the tallest of buildings. All the same, I thank you for your understanding. But you should not forget that that the prized horse used to excel in running, and the fire used to burn before it became impotent ashes. Am however comforted by the fact that lion does not beget cowards, and the elephant does not beget dwarf. That all of you have grown to discern truth from falsehood and take up gauntlets in the defense of truth is a source of personal joy to me and a clear indication that the future holds a lot of promises as it is only truth that exalts a nation.
My final political battle produced a good fruit that you all now savour with relish, but remember to water the mother tree, and do not forget to sow new seeds for the generation coming to have sweet memories of your exploits. Our victory was not personal; it was a victory for the people. Hence, people must always be the epicenter of your actions as heirs of the political heritage I left. It must be borne in mind always that a people’s government must take a pause when any of its policy appears anti-people, and must rethink such policy no matter how well intentioned. Restraint is not a sign of weakness; it only gives room for further engagement with the people for the over-all benefit of the society. This is the beauty of democracy as opposed to fascism.
Although people say that there’s no morality in politics, nevertheless I say that an assault of morality in politics, national or international is a gratuitous assault on peace for mankind (Tribune, Saturday, January 26, 1991). I therefore enjoin you to exhibit the highest standard of morality in public life. It is not always that the end justifies the means.
Public office is not a place of pleasure; it is one that should extract selflessness, sacrifice, industry and tenacity of purpose (not of office) from its holder. Therefore, be not like those who abandon the primary duty of service in the pursuit of worldly things that evaporate like a mirage. Rather than sit down to real business, some executive heads of state governments in Nigeria seem to be running after shadows and mirages. They tend to forget that one can never succeed in catching shadows and that mirages are always elusive. These executive heads, better known as governors, seem not to understand the real essence of government or their mission in politics and government (Nigerian Tribune, Saturday, November 5, 1983).
I had explained in one of my writings in the past why I write where and what. I need not go over that in any details at present. But I want to restate that I share a similar philosophy of life with the founding father of Nigerian Tribune; a philosophy that that seeks always to promote the welfare of the society and the masses; a philosophy that preaches social justice; a philosophy that wants an egalitarian order in society; a philosophy that extols the truth, justice, fairplay, intellectual brilliance, merit, goodness and fearlessness; a philosophy that frown at mediocrity, graft and corruption; a philosophy that aims at the best for humanity in Nigeria. As far as I am concerned, I do not write to please anybody, no matter how highly placed such a person may be in our society. Those who have been reading me over the years would remember that as a member of the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria, I did not spare our leaders in government between 1979 and 1985 anytime any of them appeared to miss the track. I did not write…to praise myself. I write out facts and I express my opinions like any other Nigerian. I often do this at great risks to my life but I believe that Allah is always on my side and will continue to give me adequate protection (Nigerian Tribune, Saturday, January 30, 1987).
My beloved, Allah shall protect you as you queue behind truth when it appears unprofitable. Know that in the end, when truth comes, falsehood vanishes! Let the words of Winston Churchill be your guide, that the truth is always incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.
I cherished consistency, so be consistent to our progressive and Awoist ideology. Remember my words that inconsistency in politics breeds incredibility (Nigerian Tribune, Saturday, January 18, 1992). Be consistent and steadfast, and be not of the same yoke with those who delight in political prostitution as an ideology.
My words in this letter represent a synopsis of my political philosophy which should guide you and others. I commend them and my examples to you. Whoever departs from them are certainly not of me. They are the apostates.
Where are Pa Ogundiran, Baba leader-Isamotu Ashiru, Chief Oyewusi, S.A. Farinu,S.M.Akindele, Olaide Abass, Busari Adebisi, Atilade Awakan, Hon Adelere Iseyin,Chief Pekun Adesokan, Baba Onilu Akinyele, Abu Gbadamosi, Goke Oyetunji, Dauda Alawuje, Baba Adekola, M.A. Ayandele Afilu, Mogaji Olorode,Haji Hamed Ayinla, Lekan Kazeem, Chief Jolaoso, Elder Adeola,Mrs Bukola Oni and others? Have they all forgotten my words to them? Tell them that they must not sleep and allow our common heritage to be destroyed by anyone no matter how highly placed. It is not everybody that gets a share of an inheritance that benefit from it. An inheritance that does not enjoy the sweat of labour does not last and soon perishes. May that not be the portion of our cherished heritage. Any prodigal son in our fold must be called to order immediately. It is one of the wise sayings of our people that no one knows when the ants desert their home, they leave the mound intact. The swallow is never seen to peck holes in its nest when it is time to move with the season. You must not allow the termite of time to peck holes in your honour and dignity.
I heard you are about to move with the season into a new political party. Be assured that my aburo, Asiwaju Bola Akanbi Tinubu, my friends, Adebisi Kareem Akande and Aremo Olusegun Osoba, and my son, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo will not lead you astray. This letter will remind them of my fears, hopes and dreams in the last two years and beyond. My parting words should bring back to them a lot of memories. Tell my friend and confidant, Babalaje –Chief Michael Koleoso to guard jealously the treasure I kept with him. He will understand the message. Tell him this world must not be set adrift in his own time!
Lastly, tell the Ibadan Elders that I have done my own bit of the bargain; the covenant of honour is now for them to keep. I sacrificed so much, including pride to the chagrin and anger of my most ardent followers, all in deference to their choice. Thank God, it has come to past. I have once said and still say that to be so loved and admired by the people of a city reputed to be the most densely populated in Black Africa, not because I have any wealth to spend for them is the greatest thing that can happen to a person of my age and experience in present-day Ibadan (Nigerian Tribune, Saturday, December 5, 1987).
As for those who betray me and wish to destroy the legacy I bequeath unto you, fight them not, but call their attention to the Holy Bible-2 TIMOTHY 4:14 where Paul the Apostle wrote to Timothy thus: ‘Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works’ (Aleksanderu alagbede baba se mi ni ibi pupo: oluwa yoo san fun un gege bi ise re). I shall say no more. They should however be reminded that it is only the curses of the departed that should be feared.
Extend my best wishes to the good people of my beloved State, my immediate family, political associates, the clerics, the Alaafin of Oyo, Olubadan of Ibadanland, Soun of Ogbomosoland, my aburo, Aare Musulumi of yorubaland and other crowned heads in Oyo state that ‘eyin di owo won o’.
Keep the flag flying!
Yours sincerely,
LAMIDI ONAOLAPO ADESINA
ADDENDUM
We have decided to publish the letter from Great Lam as revealed to our comrade because of the difficulties of reaching those referred to in the testament individually. We apologise for any embarrassment, if any. But the lessons of the letter cannot be missed by those who knew Lam and for the generation that seeks guidance in an age bereft of principled men and women.
The imperatives of the dialectics of change beckon on all the good elements across the political divides to come together under one roof in the redemptive efforts to save Nigeria. Those who declared that A.C.N died with Lam got it wrong. Lam is an idea that can never die. As the spirit hovers to berth in a healthy body, we beseech all progressives to join the Reformation Group as we march forward with our leaders into the largest progressive party in the continent of Africa. Soon, ko m’ese a yo,(the chaff shall be separated from the grains) and it shall be discipline, courtesies and the best virtues of progressive politics that will reign supreme in our party. The All Progressive Congress (APC) is the fulfillment of the prophesy of Chief Awolowo that the good elements in all political parties will come together to confront the evil forces that tethered our nation to backwardness and under-development.
The only motive for service by progressives as taught by our leaders is the welfare of the people, and it is on this principle that Reformation Group stands. Chief Obafemi Awolowo told a rally of Unity Party of Nigeria supporters at Iseyin on December 2, 1978: “All I want now from politics is to live for history. To live for history is to live in the hearts of men and to live in the hearts of men is to serve them selflessly”.
Our new party shall succeed because the ideals are ingrained in core progressive values, and the programmes are designed to improve the quality of life of the masses, and to serve the people, whose will is supreme. No amount of money, intimidation or self-adulation can mortgage it. It could take a little while to reach the goal but the revolution has begun. It is our destiny to live good life; it is our destiny that our children have access to standard and qualitative education; it is our destiny to have access to affordable and quality health care system; it is our destiny to be gainfully employed and to conduct our business in peace without harassment from anyone including the government. It is our destiny to have freedom and life more abundant. Unfortunately,as in the words of a great writer, Nicholas Sparks in Message in a Bottle ‘there are winds of destiny that blow when we least expect them. Sometimes they gust with fury of a hurricane, sometimes they barely fan one’s cheek. But the winds cannot be denied, bringing as they often do a future that is impossible to ignore”. Surely, a bright future is in the horizon through the Reformation Group that nobody can ignore. Not even our adversaries!
If we have made mistakes in our struggle to free Oyo state from the tyranny and infamy of the PDP as it seems, in the name of Reformation Group we apologize. Mistakes are meant to be corrected, and we shall do that with your support. We should be comforted by the words of Mahatma Gandhi that “FREEDOM is not WORTH having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes”.
We all learn from our mistakes. Henceforth, we solemnly affirm like the men of affairs and wisdom unanimously agrees that only ‘those who are masters of themselves become masters of others’, and that ‘good leadership involves self-conquest, and self-conquest is attainable only by cultivating, as a first major step… “the regime of mental magnitude”, and not a regime of mental arrogance.
It is a duty for us to fight and eliminate the imperialism of local Caesars and fascist C.E.Os in the political arena as it is a duty on you to fight any political office holder that falls into that affliction.
Some people have criticized our approach with arguments reminiscent of the saying that we should not pull down the house; we are only rebuilding the house being threatened by the flood of ignorance and self-indulgence. As Yoruba will say ‘onile ni o ni gba fun, agbara ojo ko ni oun o n’ile wo’. As the rightful owner of the progressive house, we must set the tone and the tune of conduct in the public sphere. However, for those who cannot fathom and accept our ideological prescription, as Awolowo himself wrote ‘they are welcome to their views, but for the good of the fatherland, such people should steer clear of the affairs of state, and confine their activities to those spheres where their excessive self-indulgence cannot incommode the entire nation to the point of threatening its very life’.
It would be a tragic paradox if we fail to see the maladies that are threatening to our ideology, and allow some political Lilliputians to take advantage of the follies and foibles of few misguided elements in our fold to re-launch their savagely beaten political parties into undeserved reckoning. We do not want to be taken back to the past. Our goal is to take our people into a future of hope and accomplishment and we have a roadmap for this in the cardinal programmes of the progressives which need no further restatement. The translation of the roadmap into action however will require a virile, honest and visionary party leadership who will not sell our birthright for a pot of porridge. The party is not an appendage of government; it is the mother of government. If those in government cannot discharge their responsibilities to the party without attaching conditions, the Reformation Group is ready to service the needs of the party. Afterall, it is our party. We reject the poverty mentality that is being foisted on us. We are a people with pride and dignity.
As we always say, the greatness of Oyo state is a collective responsibility.
Bi oyo o ba dara, kii se adase tokotaya!
Thank you.
Signed
