If fire was to strike your home.... how prepared are you?

03/05/2012

Most home fires are started by home heating equipment. Use caution and common sense when using propane, electric or other home heating equipment.

* Keep flammables, such as drapes and furniture, away from space and portable heaters.
* Hire a certified chimney sweep to regularly clean and inspect the chimney.
* Inspect heating equipment regularly for proper design, installation and operation.
* Follow manufacturer instructions when installing and filling liquid- and gas-fueled heaters.
* Never leave auxiliary heating equipment unattended.

BEDTIME CHECKS!

There are certain checks you should make before going to bed. By following the simple steps below, you can reduce the fire risks around your home:

close inside doors at night to stop a fire from spreading
turn off and unplug electrical appliances unless they are designed to be left on - like your freezer
check your cooker is turned off
don't leave the washing machine on
turn heaters off and put up fireguards to protect open fires
put candles and ci******es out properly
empty cooled contents of ashtrays into external bins
make sure exits are kept clear
keep door and window keys where someone can find them

BE PREPARED PLAN AHEAD!

Practice evacuating the building blindfolded. In a real fire situation, the amount of smoke generated by a fire most likely will make it difficult to see.

Practice staying low to the ground when escaping.

Feel all doors before opening them. If a door is hot, get out another way.

Learn to stop, drop to the ground, roll if clothes catch fire.

Conduct a family meeting and discuss the following topics:

Always sleep with the bedroom doors closed. This will keep deadly heat and smoke out of bedrooms, giving you additional time to escape.

Find a way for everyone to sound a family alarm. Yelling, pounding on walls, whistles, etc. Practice yelling "FIRE!"

In a fire, time is critical. Don't waste time getting dressed, don't search for pets or valuables. Just get out!

Roll out of bed. Stay low. One breath of smoke or gases may be enough to kill.

Plan a fire escape route

Plan what you would do if there were a fire in your home and always keep the escape routes clear. Make sure everyone in your home is familiar with the escape plan. If the main exit from your home locks with a key, make sure the key is always easily accessible and everyone in your household knows where it's kept
