LSSC SET TO ENSURE SAFETY OF ATHLETES, RUNNERS ON LAGOS ROADS

The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Honourable Lekan Fatodu, has said the Agency would engage the services of the law enforcement Agencies in the state to put an end to harassment and extortion of road athletes by some miscreants on the roads during training activities.

Hon. Fatodu gave this assurance during a courtesy visit by a social media influencer and marathoner, Mr. Daniel Somande, to the Commission's headquarters. The meeting addressed the need for safe, secure, and accessible sporting environments for athletes across the state.

While appealing for the patience and cooperation from lawful road users - the motorists, commuters and others for the road athletes - Hon. Fatodu reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to creating an enabling sporting environment for all sports to thrive in the State.

"The Agency will not tolerate or be lenient with any individual or group attempting to subvert government efforts toward sports development," Fatodu stated. He emphasised that the Commission remains dedicated to executing its mandate of nurturing talent through building infrastructure and fostering youth empowerment through sports. He also promised the agency's support in promoting Somande's marathon career.

Mr. Daniel Somande, in his remarks, said the primary aim of the courtesy visit is to inform the Commission of the coming 66km race scheduled to take place in Lagos State before the end of the year and his participation in the competition.

He also used the occasion to discuss career promotion and some challenges facing road athletes, part of which included safety on the road, harassment from miscreants, particularly during training.

Somande, who started his marathon career in 2020 with the Ikoyi Club Marathon race, has done 4,500 kilometres cumulatively and has also covered 50 per cent of Lagos State with the ultimate aim of covering the whole of Lagos State landmass on foot. He also shared his plan for a unique ground-breaking marathon that may include running in traditional Agbada as part of his career goal and achievement.

Highlighting the geographical advantages for distance runners in Lagos, the Ikorodu-based athlete encouraged fellow runners to consider Ikorodu as an ideal training hub.

"In Nigeria, top marathon runners often come from Jos, Plateau State, because of its high altitude and favourable topography. Ikorodu offers the closest equivalent in Lagos State with its elevated terrain, perfect for hill training, higher altitude above sea level, and wider roads compared to the congested routes elsewhere in the state," Somande noted.

Somande is currently preparing for a standout performance at the Comrades Marathon in South Africa, scheduled for June 2027, where he hopes to receive support from the Lagos State Sports Commission.

Other notable competitive races he has participated in include the Millennial Half Race in Ghana, 10km Cotonou in the Benin Republic, Capital City Race, Access Bank Marathon Race, and Arm Marathon Race, among others.

LASG TASKS ACCOUNTANTS, AUDITORS ON COLLABORATION, COMPLIANCE TO IMPROVE SERVICE DELIVERY

The Lagos State Commissioner for Finance, Mr Abayomi Oluyomi, has charged Directors and Heads of Finance and Accounts across the Lagos State Government as well as Auditors in the employ of the State Government, to strengthen collaboration beyond routine financial compliance and focus on performance, timeliness, insight and value for money in the management of public resources.

Oluyomi gave the charge on Friday, at the opening of a two-day retreat for Directors and Heads of Finance and Accounts in the Lagos State Government, organised by the State Treasury Office at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja GRA, Lagos.

The Commissioner, who commended the Accountant-General and the State Treasury Office for organising the retreat, stressed that while compliance remained fundamental to sound public finance management, it should serve as a foundation for achieving improved performance.

According to him, “Compliance is the floor. Performance is the standard,” noting that accurate financial records, timely reconciliations, proper approvals and adherence to established financial regulations were essential to sustaining public confidence and Lagos State’s credibility with investors, rating agencies and development finance institutions.

He said the Public Finance Management Law, Fiscal Responsibility Law, accounting standards and Treasury circulars were designed not only to ensure proper management of public funds but also to protect officers entrusted with public resources.

Oluyomi urged Heads of Finance and Accounts to deliver monthly reconciliations, quarterly reports, and year-end financial statements promptly to support timely decision-making.

He also encouraged them to function as financial advisers to their respective Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), providing management with useful insights into expenditure patterns, risks and resource utilisation.

The Commissioner called for stronger collaboration among the State Treasury Office, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget and revenue-generating agencies, stressing the need for all stakeholders to work with a unified understanding of the State’s finances.

Speaking on the role of Artificial Intelligence in public financial management, Oluyomi said emerging technologies could assist finance professionals in analysing large volumes of transactions, identifying unusual payments, summarising complex documents and preparing reconciliation narratives.

He, however, cautioned officers against relying blindly on AI-generated outputs, emphasising that professional responsibility remained with the officer who certifies a financial record.

The Commissioner further urged participants to maximise the two-day retreat by engaging with facilitators, sharing experiences and identifying practical changes that could improve operations in their respective units.

He said the effectiveness of the State Government’s THEMES Plus development agenda depended significantly on attention to financial details, including properly reconciled accounts, timely reports and accurate accountability for public resources.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Treasury Office and State Accountant-General, Dr Adetola John, during his welcome address at the event, maintained that officers must see themselves as key contributors to the effectiveness of their respective MDAs rather than merely as personnel responsible for processing financial transactions.

He urged the participants to work together and ensure that no unit becomes a weak link in the State’s financial management system.

The call for greater teamwork was equally reinforced by other top government officials at the retreat, including the Auditor-General for Local Government, Mr Obafemi Ogunlana; Permanent Secretary, Office of Internal Audit, Mrs Monsurat Titilope Alaka; Acting State Auditor-General, Dr Olufunke Omolara Tayo-Makanjuola; and former Lagos State Accountant-General, Dr Abiodun Muritala.

The Permanent Secretaries stressed the importance of closer institutional cooperation in ensuring that public funds are managed efficiently and translated into tangible outcomes across infrastructure, social services and other areas of development.

Located in Imota, Ikorodu Division of Lagos State, the Imota Rice Mill was developed by the Lagos State Government as part of its effort to strengthen local rice production and food security. Construction of the 32-tonnes-per-hour mill was underway by 2018, and the facility was later commissioned as a major part of the state's agricultural programme.

The mill works with farmers and other parts of the rice value chain to process locally produced paddy rice. Lagos State has described it as an important facility for supporting farmers and improving the state's food system.

The rice produced through the Lagos initiative is associated with the Eko Rice brand, giving the project a distinctly Lagos identity. The mill therefore connects farmers, industrial processing, local food production and the Lagos market in one value chain. 🌾

… As Medical Director Applauds Commitment To Healthcare Delivery

The General Hospital Badagry, in conjunction with industry stakeholders, has emphasised that pharmacists' evolving role in the health sector now requires putting the patient at the centre of pharmaceutical care, moving beyond being seen as someone behind the counter.

The Medical Director/CEO, Dr Oluseyi Adesola, disclosed this at an engagement organised by the Hospital to commemorate the Y2026 World Pharmacists Day, themed “Empowering Pharmacists for a Healthier Future”.

He highlighted critical health issues including antimicrobial resistance, pharmacovigilance in chronic disease management, medication errors, and the importance of effective health education and counselling

The Medical Director stressed the need to collaborate, integrate, and empower pharmaceutical practices, alongside investment in modern inventory technologies, to enhance patient safety, improve healthcare outcomes, strengthen pharmaceutical service delivery, and promote overall well-being.

Dr. Adesola, who was represented by his deputy, Dr Waliu Ogunba, called on the pharmacy department to remember that, at the centre of everything they do, is the patient; he also urged the members of staff to collaborate effectively, communicate respectfully and place patient safety above self, stating that observing these cues would create a healthier system that is more efficient, compassionate and worthy of the trust of our community.

Applauding the pharmacists for their commitment to promoting rational drug use and patient safety, he emphasised that every prescription reviewed; every potential drug interaction identified; every dosage corrected; and every patient properly counselled would continue to make a significant difference between harm and healing.

"The pharmacist is an essential member of a team. To our pharmacists, I want to say, your work matters; Your expertise matters; Your contribution to patient care matters," he said.

Earlier, the Head of the Pharmacy Department, Pharm. Ufuoma Ayara welcomed the relevant stakeholders present and appreciated their support for the event.

Pharm. Sunday Oke emphasised the daily realities of the hospital's pharmacy, noting that pharmacists are the safety net standing between complex, potent medications and vulnerable human lives. He advised the management to prioritise structural integration, capacity building, and robust supply chain resilience.

Representing Daily-Need Industries Limited, Pharm. Abiola Aknwunmi disclosed that the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) claims over 60,000 lives annually in Nigeria. He further revealed that, to combat sub-therapeutic dosing and moisture degradation, particularly in delicate medications like co-amoxiclav, his pharmaceutical company, which provided rigorous manufacturing standards and innovative packaging solutions, had proven its commitment to enhancing uncompromised, top-tier supply chain integrity for all its products.

LASG BOOSTS MATERNAL HEALTHCARE DELIVERY, RECORDS IMPROVED ANC4 RETURN RATE

… Urges PHC Workers To Strengthen Service Ownership, Referral System

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to improving maternal health outcomes through continuous quality improvement, strengthened antenatal care, effective labour monitoring and enhanced referral systems across Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in Health District V.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health District V, Dr Oladapo Asiyanbi, stated this at the Quarterly Collaborative Learning Session for PHC Officers-in-Charge, mentors and other key stakeholders, held recently at the Iba Local Government Secretariat, alongside the Transition, Review and Experience-Sharing Meeting on maternal health quality improvement interventions implemented with technical support from Project Aisha.

Dr Asiyanbi, who commended the participating health workers for their dedication to improving maternal health services, urged them to take ownership of their responsibilities and demonstrate greater commitment to the delivery of quality healthcare services. He emphasised the importance of promoting available PHC services within their communities and ensuring that residents are adequately informed about the maternal health services accessible to them.

He further stressed the need for stronger linkages between Primary and Secondary Healthcare facilities, noting that effective referral mechanisms, proper documentation, timely feedback and continuity of care remain critical to improving maternal health outcomes.

In her remarks, the Director, Medical Services and Disease Control, Lagos State Health District V, Dr Ahmad Amina Bello, emphasised the need for health workers to consistently adhere to established standards and clinical protocols in the provision of maternal healthcare services. She stressed that sustained quality improvement requires teamwork, regular monitoring and the commitment of healthcare providers to ensuring safe and responsive services for mothers and newborns.

Also speaking, the Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, Lagos State Health District V, Dr Oladeinde Oluwaseun, underscored the importance of data-driven decision-making in strengthening healthcare delivery. He noted that accurate and timely data generated from PHC facilities would enable health managers to identify service gaps, measure progress and develop appropriate interventions for improved maternal health outcomes.

The Transition, Review and Experience-Sharing Meeting provided an opportunity for participating facilities to assess progress made in antenatal care and delivery services, share experiences and identify strategies for sustaining the gains recorded through Project Aisha.

The review showed an improvement in the ANC4 return rate from 37 per cent to 56 per cent within three months, reflecting progress in antenatal care service utilisation and the impact of sustained quality improvement efforts at the participating Primary Healthcare Centres.

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of Lagos State Health District V to consolidating the gains recorded through the Project Aisha intervention and embedding continuous quality improvement practices into routine PHC service delivery.

The initiative aligns with the Health and Environment pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S+ Development Agenda of the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, particularly the State Government’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare system and ensuring access to quality, responsive and patient-centred healthcare services for residents.
