LASCOPA RAISES ALARM OVER ADULTERATED PALM OIL IN LAGOS MARKETS

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), has raised serious concerns over the increasing circulation of adulterated palm oil in markets across Lagos State, warning consumers to remain vigilant while purchasing the product.

The General Manager, Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), General Manager, Afolabi Solebo Esq. disclosed that complaints and market surveillance activities have revealed the presence of contaminated and artificially enhanced palm oil being sold to unsuspecting consumers by some unscrupulous traders seeking to maximise profits at the expense of public health and consumer safety.

Solebo warned that adulterated palm oil may contain harmful substances such as candle wax, chemicals, dyes, and impurities which cannot be digested by the body and are capable of causing serious health complications, including food poisoning, stomach disorders, tissue and liver damage, and other long-term health risks.

The General Manager advised consumers to carefully examine palm oil before purchase by checking for unusual colour, offensive odour, excessive thickness, sediments, or any suspicious appearance that may indicate contamination or adulteration. Consumers are also encouraged to patronise only trusted and reputable vendors while demanding quality and safe products at all times.

While reiterating the State Government’s commitment to protecting residents from unsafe and substandard products in the marketplace, Solebo said the Agency had sealed a shop sale selling adulterated palm oil along Idutafa Lane off Oluwa Street near Amodu Tijani Oluwa Mosque, Lagos Island in Lagos Island Local Government Area, Lagos State.

He warned traders and distributors engaging in the sale of adulterated palm oil to desist immediately or face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the provisions of the law guiding consumer protection in Lagos State.

The Agency further urged members of the public to promptly report cases of suspected adulterated food products, deceptive trade practices, or consumer rights violations to LASCOPA through its official communication channels for necessary investigation and enforcement action.

LASCOPA reaffirmed its commitment to continuous market monitoring, consumer sensitisation, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure that residents have access to safe, wholesome, and quality products across Lagos State.

LASG URGES CONSUMERS TO REPORT UNFAIR BUSINESS PRACTICES TO APPROPRIATE REGULATORY AGENCIES

The Lagos State Government has advised residents and consumers across the State to report cases of unfair treatment, exploitation, and unethical business practices to the appropriate consumer protection and regulatory agencies for investigation, mediation, and redress, rather than resorting to the Police in the first instance.

The General Manager of LASCOPA, Afolabi Solebo Esq., during a mediation session at the Ikeja office today, stated that consumer protection agencies are established to safeguard the rights and interests of consumers and to promote fair and ethical business practices within the marketplace.

According to him, issues that should be reported to consumer protection agencies include the sale of fake, substandard, hazardous, or expired products; false advertising and deceptive business practices; overpricing and hidden charges; unfulfilled promotions or discounts; poor service delivery; refusal to honour warranties or agreements; as well as other forms of consumer exploitation and abuse.

Solebo further encouraged consumers to always retain receipts, invoices, product packaging, warranties, and other relevant documents as evidence to support their complaints and facilitate prompt resolution of disputes.

He reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Government to protecting consumers against unfair and unethical practices and urged residents to make use of the appropriate regulatory channels when seeking redress.

The General Manager also appealed to Divisional Police Stations, Area Commands, State Commands, Zonal Commands of the Nigeria Police Force or other Government Law Enforcement Agencies to refer consumer protection-related complaints to agencies legally established and empowered to address violations of consumer rights.

In the same vein, he implored legal practitioners to advise their clients to seek redress through LASCOPA in matters relating to breaches or violations of consumer rights before resorting to litigation in court.

Furthermore, Solebo encouraged consumers to understand their fundamental rights and responsibilities, stressing the importance of speaking up and reporting violations responsibly.

He advised consumers to report complaints to Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) or the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) through their official social media platforms or via the following hotlines: LASCOPA Hotlines - 081 2499 3895 / 091 5389 4878 or

LASCOPA WARNS CONSUMERS AGAINST CONSUMPTION OF SPOILED TOMATOES

The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), has warned residents against the consumption of spoiled or fungus-infested tomatoes popularly known as “Ata Esha,” citing serious health risks associated with such products.

The General Manager of the Agency, Afolabi Solebo, urged consumers to avoid purchasing or consuming tomatoes showing visible white, green, or black fungal growth.

According to him, fungi found on spoiled tomatoes may produce harmful toxins, including aflatoxins, which can lead to severe health complications such as liver damage and other related diseases.

Speaking on the importance of healthy food consumption, Solebo stated that “a healthy person is determined by what he or she consumes from time to time.” He further explained that cooking, boiling, or frying contaminated tomatoes may not eliminate the harmful toxins, thereby making such food unsafe for human consumption.

The General Manager also cautioned consumers against purchasing spoiled tomatoes because they are cheaper, stressing that health and safety should always take precedence over cost considerations.

Solebo encouraged Lagos residents to carefully inspect food items before purchase and avoid visibly spoiled or mouldy tomatoes and other food products.

He also advised consumers to properly dispose of contaminated food items and report the sale of unsafe, expired, or spoiled products to the appropriate government agencies responsible for public health, environmental safety, and consumer protection.

Furthermore, he noted that consumers have fundamental rights as well as responsibilities, including being well-informed about products and services, speaking out against unfair practices, and making ethical and environmentally conscious choices.

Solebo disclosed that government monitoring and enforcement teams have been deployed to markets across the State to apprehend traders engaged in the sale of unsafe food products.
