Kwara blames rise in coronavirus cases on influx of travellers from Lagos, North West

Kwara state government has attributed the increase in COVID-19 cases in the state to the influx of people from Lagos and North Western states to Ilorin, the state capital despite the ban on inter- state travels.

The state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq said this while speaking with newsmen during an inspection visit to the Sobi Specialist Hospital’s Isolation Centre in Ilorin.

The governor was at the centre to monitor health personnel’s compliance with safety protocols.

He disclosed that 11 of the index cases at the isolation centre are travellers from Lagos and north- west states who were intercepted by security operatives deployed to enforce the ban on inter – state travels.

“Its disturbing that our new index cases were imported, they were people from Lagos and north western states who came here at all cost despite the ban on inter state travels and we are not happy with that” he said.

He expressed delight that community transmission of COVID-19 has not set in Kwara.

He said the government would continue to mount surveillance to prevent travellers from other states from gaining entrance into the state.

The governor who commended the security agencies for rising to the occasion urged them to do more in order to stop the spread of the disease in the state.

Kwara: We have delivered on water supply

The present administration in Kwara state has said that it has solved the problem of perennial water scarcity in some parts of the state.

Speaking on a radio programme, monitored in Ilorin on Monday, Commissioner for Water Resources, Mrs Arinola Lawal, said that present government inherited acute water supply situation from the previous administration in the state.

The commissioner, who said that almost all the waterworks in the state had been vandalized before the coming on board of the Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq-led government, added that immediate past government in the state expended between N7and N8 billion on water reticulation as it used water tankers to convey water to some parts of Ilorin, the state capital.

Mrs Lawal also said that the current administration met the Water Corporation in comatose as the staff were on strike based on non-payment of arrears of salaries and lack of chemical.

“The first step we took was to settle the arrears of salaries of the staff of Kwara state Water Corporation. We met on ground moribund waterworks scattered across the state. The administration affected the repair of five Water Works in Kaiama, Asa Dam, Gwanara, Patigi and Igbaja.

“This government has ensured the regular purchase of alum. Now some areas within the Ilorin metropolis and environs that had not got in the last 10 years before we came on board now have water running in their taps. The areas are Shao, Odota, Zango.

“The state also recently sank motorized boreholes in 14 places in Baruten local government area, while the government has rehabilitated no fewer than 400 boreholes across the state. All the ‘Up Kwara overhead water tanks that were hitherto not in use are up and functioning now”, she said.
