“Taraba Is Quietly Bleeding” — Hon. Danjuma Shiddi Raises Alarm, Calls for Accountability and Fiscal Responsibility

By Taraba politics

Jalingo, Taraba State | October 24, 2025

In what many have described as one of the boldest political statements in recent times, Hon. Danjuma Usman Shiddi, former Member representing Wukari/Ibi Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, has written an open letter to the Taraba State House of Assembly, leaders of thought, senior citizens, and political stakeholders, calling for greater accountability, transparency, and fiscal discipline in the state.

The letter, titled "A Call for Accountability and Fiscal Responsibility in Taraba State,”
paints a disturbing picture of what Hon. Shiddi calls the “quiet bleeding” of Taraba — a state, he says, standing at the edge of a financial precipice.

“Our dear Taraba is quietly bleeding. The pulse of our state grows faint, and if one listens closely enough, one can hear the groan of a people whose future is being mortgaged without their consent,” he wrote.

According to the outspoken former lawmaker, the current administration has, within just two years, borrowed or secured approvals exceeding ₦1.2 trillion, despite generating only ₦10.87 billion in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in 2023.

He listed several major loans and facilities, including:

₦206.78 billion from a consortium of banks;
₦350 billion bond approved in 2025; and
$268.63 million (approximately ₦510 billion) from the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID).

Shiddi questioned the transparency of these financial arrangements, alleging that no detailed breakdowns or project locations have been made public.

“A state that earns ₦10.87 billion a year cannot repay ₦1.2 trillion without selling its soul. This is not governance; it is gambling — with our future, our children’s inheritance, and the faith of a people who trusted their leaders to act with restraint,” he stated.

The former legislator also expressed concern over the implementation of the free and compulsory education policy announced by Governor Agbu Kefas, questioning the whereabouts of the ₦17 billion reportedly earmarked for uniforms and school supplies.

He further lamented that despite huge federal allocations and loans, the state continues to struggle with poor infrastructure, unpaid salaries, and deteriorating social services.

“Allocations have doubled, loans have multiplied, yet development remains as scarce as integrity in the corridors of power,” he wrote pointedly.

Hon. Shiddi then turned his attention to the Taraba State House of Assembly, urging lawmakers to rise to their constitutional duty of oversight and accountability rather than “cheerleading” the executive.

“You were not elected to clap. You were chosen to question, to check, and to act as the conscience of the state,” he said, invoking Sections 128 and 129 of the Nigerian Constitution, which empower the legislature to summon and investigate public officials.

He called on the Assembly to halt all future loan approvals until the government publishes audited reports of all existing loans and projects, insisting that Taraba deserves full transparency on how public funds are managed.

In concluding his passionate appeal, Hon. Shiddi drew comparisons with other Nigerian states that have prioritized internally generated revenue and prudent fiscal management.

"In Zamfara, Governor Dauda Lawal rebuilds without loans. In Ogun, the government has raised its IGR to over ₦126 billion this year. Taraba — rich in land, solid minerals, and people — should not be drowning in debt,” he added.

The letter has since sparked conversations across political and civic circles, with many citizens commending Shiddi’s courage to speak truth to power.

“Let posterity record that when Taraba was being drowned in silence, some of us raised our voices — not out of malice, but out of duty,” he concluded.

Hon. Danjuma Usman Shiddi, also known as Danji SS, is a two-term federal lawmaker who represented Wukari/Ibi Federal Constituency in the 8th and 9th National Assembly. Known for his outspokenness, Shiddi has often advocated for transparency, justice, and grassroots development in Taraba State.

The Executive Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas,
T.Y Danjuma House,
Taraba State.

Dear Governor Dr Agbu Kefas

We, the concerned citizens of Taraba State, are writing to bring to your attention the urgent matter of unpaid salaries for over 3,000 civil servants who have not received their salaries for four months. These workers are indigenes of the state, and their lives and families depend heavily on these salaries.

Notably, many of these civil servants, allegedly tagged as "ghost workers," are actually the most active staff in their respective places of primary assignment. We urge you to verify this claim. Furthermore, some of these individuals were given appointments by your state executive council members as part of efforts to reduce joblessness among indigenes, aligning with your "5 Fingers Agenda."

As you continue to address various challenges across the state, we humbly request that you prioritize the payment of these outstanding salaries. The prolonged delay has caused significant hardship for these workers, making it difficult for them to meet their basic needs.

We commend your efforts in strengthening the security architecture of the state, promoting free education, and encouraging youth involvement in governance. These initiatives have shown promise and potential for positive change. However, the issue of unpaid salaries requires immediate attention to ensure the well-being of our state's workforce.

We urge you to give this matter due consideration and take immediate action to resolve the salary backlog.

Sincerely,
Concerned Citizens

Sons of Sardauna Who Betrayed Their Own People

—By Comr A.B Buba

Sardauna Local Government Area is not just another LGA in Taraba State, it is the pride of the Mambilla Plateau, the second most populated LGA in the state, and a major economic engine. Our farmlands feed thousands, our timber market sustains the state’s coffers, and our tourism potential is unmatched.

We are not beggars. We are a people whose sweat, labour, and resources keep the state alive.

And yet, our only road to the rest of Taraba State is a disgraceful, dangerous relic from over 30 years ago, built during the regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. Since then, not one meaningful rehabilitation has been done. This road, the single lifeline connecting us to the outside world, is today a death trap, breaking vehicles, killing people, and strangling the economy.

The most painful truth? The men in the best position to fight for us are not strangers, they are our own sons.

Nelson, from Nguroje, sent to the State House of Assembly to be our voice, has abandoned his legislative duties to follow the Governor like a personal aide, smiling in photo-ops while the people who voted for him dodge potholes big enough to bury a wheel.

Abel Peter, from Mbamga the man who served as Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly and holding the member seat for nearly two decades, holding one of the most powerful political offices in the state, had every chance to make this road a priority. Instead, year after year, he watched it crumble while consolidating his political position. Now still in the seat representing Mbamga, he continues the same silence and inaction that have defined his career. His legacy is not leadership, it is neglect dressed in a fine what ever u chose to give him na u know.

Abdul Aziz Titong, from Gembu, lives at the heart of this suffering yet cannot point to any concrete step he has taken to bring relief to his people.

Abel David, from Sardauna itself, representing Sardauna, Gashaka, and Kurmi in the House of Representatives, is quick to make campaign promises but slow to deliver anything tangible to his homeland hopefully he sees this and acts on it.

Abubakar Bawa, PDP Chairman in Taraba, another son of Sardauna, enjoys influence at the highest levels yet has turned a blind eye to the cries of the very people whose votes his party depends on.

What kind of leadership is this?
A leadership that forgets its roots the moment it tastes power.
A leadership that values political positions over the survival of its own people.
A leadership that allows farmers to watch their tomatoes in Mbamga rust, Cattle in Nguroje market die of road stress before reaching Kurmi, Maize spoiled before reaching the State capital, and fruits like Banana, panaple of hard working Seller woman in Yerimaru and Sabon gari Kakara rot because they can’t reach the market in time.
A leadership that watches timber trucks break down for days and weeks on a road that could be fixed in months if there was political will.
A leadership that allows pregnant women, accident victims, and the critically ill to die because ambulances cannot navigate the hellish terrain.
A leadership that watches tourism a potential goldmine for Sardauna die a slow death because no visitor wants to risk their life on this road.

This is not ordinary neglect. This is betrayal betrayal of family, betrayal of community, betrayal of the very land that gave them life and identity.

For over three decades, Sardauna has been loyal at the polls. We have voted overwhelmingly, delivered victories, and given our leaders political legitimacy. And yet, these same leaders have repaid us with silence, inaction, and abandonment. They stand by while our economy bleeds and our people suffer, preferring to polish their political images instead of standing in the mud with us to demand change.

History will not forget this. Nelson, Abel Peter, Abdul Aziz Titong, Abel David, and Abubakar Bawa will not be remembered for their titles, but for their failure to protect their homeland when it needed them most.

Sardauna LGA is not asking for favours. We are demanding what is ours a road worthy of our economic contribution and human dignity.

To our so-called leaders. the time for empty promises is over. Fix the road now, or forever wear the shame of being the sons who abandoned their mother in her hour of need.

CONCERN CITIZENS WROTE:
Demand for Justice for Aisha Rilwanu Maiwada and Her Unborn Child
To:
The Executive Governor, Taraba State Government
The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
The Honourable Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation
The National Human Rights Commission
Federal Ministry of Women Affairs
All Concerned Authorities

We are compelled to bring to your attention the tragic and avoidable death of Aisha Rilwanu Maiwada and her unborn child, whose boat sank into the Namnai River due to the state's negligence in repairing the bridge for over a year. Her co**se and whereabouts remain unknown, leaving her family in anguish. This heartbreaking loss, caused by circumstances that could and should have been prevented, is not just a personal tragedy it is a public outcry for accountability, reform, and justice.

Aisha's death is emblematic of the systemic failures that continue to endanger the lives of innocent citizens, particularly women and children, across Nigeria. Her life and that of her unborn baby were cut short due to what we believe was negligence, inefficiency, or failure in the systems meant to protect and care for her. This must not go unanswered.

With heavy hearts, we demand:

Immediate and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Aisha Rilwanu Maiwada’s death, identifying those responsible for the failure or negligence that led to this tragedy.

Public disclosure of findings and swift legal action against anyone found culpable, no matter their status or position.

Adequate compensation to the family of the deceased for the loss of both Aisha and her unborn child.

Systemic reforms in health care, law enforcement, or any institution found to have played a role in this loss, to ensure such a tragedy never happens again.

Support services (legal, psychological, and financial) for the bereaved family, including efforts to protect and secure their well-being.

Aisha Rilwanu Maiwada was not just a name she was a daughter, a wife

Abandoned Road Project: Mararaba Pantisawa-Yorro Road Leaves Commuters in Peril

A critical road project in Taraba State, the Mararaba Pantisawa-Yorro Road, has been abandoned for over two years, leaving commuters to endure perilous journeys. Despite being allocated N123m in the 2024 Federal Government budget, the project's progress has been stalled.

The construction, which had commenced with the er****on of about 10 piers across the river, has remained incomplete since then. The lack of progress has forced commuters to rely on the old, one-lane bridge, which poses significant risks, particularly at night.

The precarious state of the road has led to increased accident risks, and the community is now calling for urgent action. The Federal Ministry of Works and the implementing agency are urged to intervene and compel the contractor to return to the site and complete the project.

The prolonged abandonment of this critical infrastructure project has raised concerns about the effectiveness of government oversight and the contractor's commitment to delivering on their obligations. The affected communities are demanding that the government takes immediate action to complete the road and ensure the safety of commuters.

Alleged N27b Fraud: Darius Ishaku Advised me to Run away Because of EFCC- Witness

The First Prosecution Witness, PW1, Ismail Lawal in the trial of the former governor of Taraba State, Darius Dickson Ishaku on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, informed Justice S.C. Oriji of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Maitama, Abuja, that Ishaku advised him to run away for a period of six months, so as not to report to the EFCC that needed him for its investigations concerning the former governor.
Ishaku, the first defendant, is facing prosecution by the EFCC alongside a former permanent secretary, Bureau for Local government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Bello Yero, on a 15-count charge, bordering on criminal breach of trust, conspiracy and conversion of public fund to the tune of N27,000,000,000.00 (Twenty -seven Billion Naira).
Speaking under cross-examination by the first defendant’s counsel, P. H. Ogbole, SAN, the witness disclosed that as the EFCC was closing in on him in furtherance of its investigation of the first defendant, he was then advised by the first defendant to run away for six months adding that the Commission arrested him while he was he was planning to submit himself to it.
“I was invited to come to the EFCC and was planning to go before His Excellency asked me to stay out. When he asked me to go, I asked how long and he said six months, but people have gone ahead of me and have given statements against me that they gave me money, so if the EFCC asked me to come and I did not come at that time, meaning they may be suspecting that I took the money,” he said.
He further stated that he was detained by the EFCC for 40 days because he couldn’t meet up with the conditions of the administrative bail. “I was in EFCC detention for 40 days because I couldn't meet the bail conditions. I was given bail conditions on the second or third day. I also made statements before I was asked to bring sureties”, he said.
The witness also stated that he was in no position to ascertain if the assignments he undertook for the first defendant were legitimate or not, adding that he wouldn’t have carried them out if he knew they were illegitimate.
“I have no knowledge of what was going on in the offices or the communication between His Excellency and the people. My own was to go where I was told to collect money, based on instructions. So I wouldn’t know what the money was meant for. My own was to follow instructions. I wouldn't have done them if I knew they were illegitimate assignments,” he said.

Testifying further, he said, “The assignment I have been given, I carry out. I wouldn’t know the communication or relationship between the governor and the people whom I was taking the money from. I was only under the assignment which I did. And as a governor, I didn’t believe he was sending me to carry out illegitimate assignments at that time. Mine is just to follow instructions to collect money, pay into accounts and bring the rest to him.”

He further informed the court that the EFCC did not promise or assure him that it will use him as a prosecution witness against the first defendant. “I was not informed that I would be a prosecution witness, until I read it in the dailies, then the EFCC informed me that I will be a witness. I was just asked questions which I answered. Documents were shown to me, I was asked questions based on those documents.

Justice Oriji adjourned the matter till September 30 and October 15 and 20 and November 6, 2025 for continuation of cross-examination and continuation of trial.
