2026: A Year of Renewed Hope — Akpabio Reaffirms Senate’s Commitment to National Stability

The President of the Senate, Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, has expressed confidence that 2026 will be a year of renewed hope and steady national progress, anchored on institutional responsibility, legislative diligence, and collective resolve.

In his New Year message, signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, Senator Akpabio acknowledged the resilience of Nigerians and underscored the central role of the National Assembly—particularly the Senate—in sustaining democratic stability, promoting accountability, and advancing the nation’s development agenda.

“As we enter the year 2026, I extend my warm wishes to Nigerians for a peaceful and fulfilling year. I commend the resilience, patience, and civic maturity of our people, even in challenging times,” the Senate President said.

He noted that while the Executive continues to implement its policies, the National Assembly remains firmly committed to its constitutional responsibility of lawmaking, representation, and oversight, ensuring that governance outcomes reflect the aspirations of the Nigerian people.

“The Senate and the entire National Assembly will continue to discharge their duties with diligence—providing legislative support where necessary, exercising oversight where required, and always acting in the best interest of national unity, economic stability, and social justice.”

Senator Akpabio expressed cautious optimism that ongoing efforts to address insecurity, economic pressures, infrastructure gaps, and youth unemployment would yield more visible results in the coming year, stressing that sustainable progress depends on strong institutions rather than personalities.

“Our democracy is strengthened when institutions function properly and leaders remain accountable. The National Assembly will continue to work to strengthen these institutions and to ensure that public policy is people-centred and forward-looking.”

Looking ahead to increased political activity as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections, the Senate President cautioned Nigerians against divisive politics and false messianic narratives.

“As political activities intensify, Nigerians must remain discerning. History has shown that those who present themselves as sole rescuers often deepen division rather than heal it. Democracy thrives on ideas, responsibility, and respect for national unity—not inflammatory rhetoric or deception.”

He urged political actors to conduct themselves with restraint and a sense of national duty, noting that the Senate will continue to uphold democratic norms, parliamentary discipline, and the rule of law.

“The National Assembly remains committed to constructive engagement with the Executive, the Judiciary, and all stakeholders, to build a more united, just, and prosperous Nigeria—where leadership is defined by service and institutions outlive individuals.”

The Senate President concluded by calling on Nigerians to remain engaged, vigilant, and hopeful in the year ahead.

“I urge Nigerians to continue to support democratic institutions and to work collectively for peace, equity, and national progress.”

“On behalf of my family, my constituents, the Senate, and the entire National Assembly, I wish all Nigerians a peaceful celebration and a prosperous 2026.”

Akpabio Addresses Ivoirien Parliament, Harps on Collaboration, African Unity

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio on Monday addressed the National Assembly of Cote d'Ivoire where he stressed the importance of parliamentary collaboration and unity among African nations.

Speaking at the opening session of the 2025 first Ordinary Session of the National Assembly of Cote d’Ivoire in Abidjan, Akpabio also called for strengthening of bilateral ties between Nigeria and Cote d'Ivoire.

Akpabio whose address was titled: "Strengthening Ties, Building the Future Together" told the Ivoirien lawmakers that Cote d'Ivoire and Nigeria are not merely neighbours but partners in the grand endeavour of African progress.

"The future of west Africa rests upon us. Therefore, let us not be complacent. The challenges before us are vast - youth unemployment, human trafficking and security threats.

"Yet, so too are the opportunities. Parliamentary cooperation should lead the way to deeper executive collaboration and unity.

"We must set the tone for African parliamentary engagements and cooperation. The colonialists may have cut Africa into geopolitical chunks, but we must unite and stitch the torn fabrics of our heritage and teach the world that blood is still thicker than water.

"Let us envision of a region where borders are bridges of unity, not walls of division, where trade flourishes, cultures blend and progress becomes the right of every citizen.

"This vision is brought closer to reality by the African Continental Free Trade Area(AfCFTA), a framework that demands our collective commitment to foster innovation and cooperation.

"AfCFTA is not just a policy, it is a call to arms - a summons to tear down the barriers that divide us and build bridges that unite us.

"Let us strengthen our trade, share our knowledge and expand our horizons. Let us ensure that the children of Cote d'Ivoire and Nigeria in particular and Africa in general inherit a continent where dreams are not just possible but inevitable.

"Let us strengthen the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Cote d'Ivoire. Our collaboration must deepen across all sectors - trade, education, agriculture and energy - to ensure that fruits of our partnership uplift every citizen in both nations.

"As an African proverb reminds us, "The river is swollen with rain, but no single drop claims responsibility." We are all stewards of the progress we seek and it is only through unity that we shall achieve it," he said.

The Senate President commended the Speaker of the Ivoirien National Assembly, Hon. Adama Bictogo for his leadership which he described as "a symbol of reconciliation and unity."

He urged all the Honourable members of the Assembly to work hand in hand to tackle the scourge of human trafficking, enhance security cooperation and invest in the future of the youth.

Akpabio also paid tribute to Ivoirien President Alassane Ouattara for the great work he is doing in his country and congratulated him and the people of Cote d’Ivoire for hosting, with grace and dignity, the 2024 African Cup of Nations.

"Your victory over my country Nigeria, a global football powerhouse in that tournament was not just sporting glory, it was a proclamation to the world that Cote d'Ivoire rises to every challenge," he said.Akpabio Addresses Ivoirien Parliament, Harps on Collaboration, African Unity

"This is not just a financial document; it is the blueprint of the aspirations and hopes of millions of Nigerians.

"Another critical task before us is the completion of electoral reforms. As the nation begins preparations for the next electoral cycle, we have a unique opportunity to strengthen our democracy.

"Electoral reform is not just a legislative duty; it is a moral imperative. It is our chance to gift the Nigerian people a system that is transparent, credible, and reflective of their will.

"Our country faces numerous challenges, but we must never underestimate the power of collective intercession. Pray for wisdom, peace, and divine intervention to guide our leaders and unite our people.

"This moment is significant. We are at the end of first quarter of the 21st century, a time that demands bold action and visionary leadership.

"History is calling on us to make a difference—to write a new narrative for our nation, one of progress, justice, and boundless possibilities.

"Distinguished Senators, let us rise to this challenge. Let us be relentless in our pursuit of excellence, fearless in the face of obstacles, and unwavering in our love for Nigeria.

"Our work here is not just about legislation; it is about shaping the future of a nation and leaving a legacy for generations to come.

"As we forge ahead, let these words resonate in our hearts: Nigeria is counting on us. The time to act is now. Let us unite in purpose, strive for the common good, and dedicate ourselves wholly to the task of nation-building.

Draw Inspiration From Reputable Professionals - Akpabio Tasks Surveyors

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Monday tasked the Nigerian Institution Estate Surveyors and Valuers ( NIESV), to reflect on the experiences of professional bodies in nations as United Kingdom and Singapore in their contribution to national development.

He stated this in Abuja at the Inauguration Lecture and ceremony of the 26th President of NIESV, Victor Adekunle Alonge, while congratulating the Council for its unwavering dedication to professionalism, patriotism and excellence .

Delivering his speech on The Role of Professional Bodies in National Development: Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Perspective, Akpabio said, "let us draw inspiration from the wisdom of His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, who once said, “In the face of adversity, hope is our guiding light.” In our pursuit of a brighter future for our nation, let us hold onto that hope and let it propel us towards greatness and greater prosperity.

According to Akpabio, " at the same time, let us reflect on the experiences of reputable professional bodies in nations such as the United Kingdom and Singapore as we ponder the significance of professional bodies in national development. In the United Kingdom, esteemed organizations like the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) have played a pivotal role in shaping policies, setting standards, and driving innovation in the fields of surveying and urban planning.

Their contributions have advanced the built environment and fostered sustainable development across the United Kingdom.
Similarly, in Singapore, companies such as the Singapore Institute of Surveyors and Valuers (SISV) and the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) have been at the forefront of promoting excellence, professionalism, and best practices in the construction and real estate sectors.

Through collaboration with government agencies and industry stakeholders, these companies have significantly contributed to Singapore’s success as a global hub for urban innovation and sustainable development. Therefore, the topic of our lecture today, has parallels in the global space.

"As we contemplate the transformative impact of professional bodies on national development, let us strive to emulate the successes of these esteemed bodies and forge partnerships that will propel Nigeria towards a future of prosperity,

"We must acknowledge the tireless efforts of our legislators in the Senate, who have championed the cause of surveying and valuers in Nigeria through groundbreaking legislation and visionary policies that uphold the highest standards of integrity."
