TO BE OR NOT TO BE

To be APC, or not to be—That, apparently, is no longer the question.

This afternoon the formal entrance into the APC by Governor Caleb Mutfwang settles the soliloquy. The stage has shifted, the cast has adjusted, yet, the play must go on.

Commendation is due to former Governor Lalong for choosing statesmanship—relinquishing the party leadership role to Governor Mutfwang with grace, proving that egos can, on rare occasions, exit the stage quietly.

Equally noted is Hon. Gagdi’s unequivocal declaration of total loyalty to the Governor, made on behalf of Plateau’s National Assembly caucus—clear, loud, and devoid of political stuttering.

The message going forward is simple: old PDP hands and old APC hands must now learn to clap in rhythm. Unity of purpose is no longer a suggestion; it is the script.

As for those still in denial—debating ghosts, shadows, and what might have been—kindly wake up.

Politics is tragic only when actors refuse to read the room.

The times have changed. But the struggle remains!

To be pragmatic, or to be irrelevant—that is now the question!!!

To those who feel disappointed, unsettled, or even hurt by Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s defection to the APC, your emotions are valid and understandable.
Political support is often rooted not just in calculation, but in trust, shared struggle, and a sense of collective identity. When a major shift occurs, it is natural to feel let down.

However, it may be helpful to separate the vehicle from the driver. The values, temperament, and governing philosophy that earned Governor Mutfwang your support did not disappear with a change of party. His commitment to peace, inclusion, justice, and development on the Plateau remains the true measure by which his leadership should be judged, not the platform on which he currently stands.

Politics, especially in Nigeria, is dynamic, not fixed. Alliances shift, parties realign, and strategies evolve in response to changing realities. While this can be unsettling, it does not automatically negate past sacrifices or future expectations. What ultimately matters is whether governance improves, whether the state gains stronger leverage to address security and development challenges, and whether the lives of ordinary citizens are positively impacted.

Supporters are therefore encouraged to remain calm, reflective, and engaged. Hold the Governor to account, insist on transparency, and continue to demand performance.
Support should not be blind, but disappointment should not translate into disengagement. History has shown that leadership decisions often reveal their true value over time, not in the heat of the moment.

Above all, remember that loyalty to Plateau State and its people must remain paramount.

Parties are instruments; progress is the goal.

If this political shift ultimately delivers stability, opportunity, and peace, then patience and restraint today may prove to have been wise tomorrow.

As an ardent supporter, Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s defection to the APC can be understood more as a strategic recalibration necessitated by political reality and the overriding interest of Plateau State.

Loyalty to a leader should ultimately be loyalty to outcomes, not platforms. Governor Mutfwang’s political identity, to his supporters, has always been anchored in competence, stability, and a genuine commitment to peace, development, and institutional order in Plateau State. If those objectives are better advanced within the APC—a party that currently controls the federal centre and commands wider national leverage—then the decision is pragmatic rather than ideological apostasy.

It must be understood that Nigerian politics is not conducted in a vacuum of ideals. Access to federal support, security coordination, infrastructure funding, and policy alignment matters greatly, particularly for a state like ours, with its unique security and developmental challenges. An ardent supporter would reasonably argue that remaining in political isolation, however principled, may exact a higher cost on the people than a calculated realignment that unlocks tangible benefits.

Also, Governor Mutfwang’s defection does not erase his track record or negate the mandate freely given to him by the people. That mandate was earned on the strength of his character, vision, and credibility—not merely on party colours. Those who believe in his leadership would contend that those qualities remain intact regardless of partisan affiliation.

Furthermore, defection in Nigerian politics, while often viewed cynically, can also be an instrument of survival and relevance. From a supporter’s perspective, what matters most is whether the Governor continues to govern inclusively, protect Plateau’s interests, and deliver measurable progress. If his move to the APC strengthens his hand to do just that, then it is a decision to be evaluated by results, not sentiments.
