HUMAN CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT TIP FOR THE DAY
FOUR TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE CAREER DECISION MAKING.
As a graduate/job seeker what do you envision about your future? How do you prepare for the future to guarantee your desired outcomes? Please note that the future you anticipate is just a few seconds away; its closer to you than you think; just one step from now.
What is the basis for your career choice- the economy/government, JAMB or your personal interest? Honestly speaking, decision making can be stressful. However, you cannot hide from it. It is pertinent to note that good decision making is an essential skill for career success and effective leadership. If you can learn to make timely and well-thought decisions, then you can get your well-deserved success. However the consequences of a bad decision could be enormous. No matter how weighty or sensitive a decision is, there are some guidelines/principles to facilitate the decision making process.
Here are four (4) steps to consider when preparing for your career future.
(1) Develop a clear vision for the future.
(2) Conduct a Self-assessment (What Kind of person am i?, What motivates Me? What are my interests? What personal traits are critical to my job performance and satisfaction?)
(3) Gather information and evaluate risks
(4) Make the decision ( don’t be afraid to take a chance or step out of your comfort zone; challenge the status quo)
Your career decisions are limited by your ability- what you are capable of now or in the future. To make a skilful career decision, there is need for you to be focused, flexible and open to new learning. Aside from broadening your horizon, an effective career decision makes achievement of your dreams far more likely.
Finally, every decision is made to achieve a goal or objective. However, no decision is perfect in that it can’t guarantee you 100% success rate in the achievement of your goals. Keep your goals SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time bound).
