PLATOON 7 WINS INTER-PLATOON DRILLS COMPETITION

Platoon 7 has emerged winner of the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Inter-Platoon Drills Competition held at the Parade Ground of the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Kussala Dam, Karaye Local Government Area of Kano State.

The competition featured all ten platoons and was designed to test corps members’ discipline, teamwork, coordination, stamina and unity.

In his welcome address, the Camp Commandant, Major H. Abdullahi, described the drill competition as an important component of the orientation course. He noted that beyond the display of smartness and coordinated movements, drills instil discipline, teamwork, obedience to lawful commands and respect for constituted authority—qualities he said are essential for nation-building.

Major Abdullahi commended the corps members for their commitment, determination and hard work in preparing for the competition, adding that their performances would demonstrate the level of discipline and team spirit they had developed throughout the orientation course.

Declaring the competition open, the NYSC Kano State Coordinator, Haj Halima Abdulkarim Abubakar, represented by the Camp Director, Mr Mohammed Bagana, commended the corps members for their dedication and commitment to representing their respective platoons.

She urged them to demonstrate the skills, stamina and discipline acquired from their drill instructors throughout their stay in camp.

She further noted that the competition provided an opportunity to promote unity, healthy competition and leadership skills among corps members.

After a keenly contested competition, Platoon 7 emerged as the overall winner, while Platoon 8 took second position and Platoon 10 came third.
The Best Parade Commander award also went to Platoon 7, in recognition of its outstanding performance and command during the competition.

The event ended on a high note, with corps members applauding the participating platoons for their impressive display of discipline, teamwork and military precision.

UNITED CAPITAL REWARDS CORPS MEMBERS AT KUSALLA DAM ORIENTATION CAMP

Corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Kusalla Dam, Karaye LGA, Kano State, have received a major boost to their entrepreneurial aspirations, as United Capital rewarded three corps members who emerged winners in a business pitch competition.

The sum of ₦1 million was disbursed to the winners of the pitching exercise, sponsored by United Capital, the investment arm of United Bank for Africa (UBA), as part of efforts to support young entrepreneurs and provide funding for viable business ideas.

At the end of the competition, Stephen Josiah of Platoon 6 emerged first and received ₦500,000, while Precious Ugozie of Platoon 1 came second with ₦300,000. Dada Danjuma of Platoon 3 emerged third and received ₦200,000.

The initiative formed part of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme for the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Orientation Course, which is designed to equip corps members with practical skills and entrepreneurial knowledge for self-reliance and economic empowerment.

As the SAED programme drew to a close, corps members also benefited from sensitisation sessions by various institutions. Officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) provided insights into anti-corruption practices and business registration, while officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service sensitised corps members on regular and irregular migration.

Financial literacy and investment sessions were also delivered by El-Sufyan Global Services, Jaiz Bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and United Capital, exposing corps members to responsible financial management, investment opportunities and strategies for building sustainable businesses.

The various activities underscored the importance of the NYSC orientation course in preparing corps members not only for national service, but also for entrepreneurship, financial independence, responsible citizenship and meaningful contributions to national development.

REPORT ON THE OFFICIAL VISIT OF THE DIRECTOR GENERAL, NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE CORPS (NYSC), TO THE KANO STATE PERMANENT ORIENTATION CAMP

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Brigadier General OO Nafiu paid an official working visit to the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp kussala Dam Karaye LGA of Kano State.

During the visit, the Director General conducted an inspection of camp facilities and delivered an address to the Corps Members currently undergoing their three-week orientation exercise.

The address focused on national unity, personal security, health, discipline, and career development.

Key Highlights of the Address:

Fostering National Integration and Inter-Ethnic Friendships;
The Director General reminded corps members that the foundational objective of the NYSC scheme is to foster national unity and cohesion. He strongly urged corps members to step out of their comfort zones, interact across cultural lines, and build meaningful, lifelong friendships with peers from other geopolitical zones.

Emphasis on Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED)
Addressing current economic realities, the Director General charged corps members to pay close attention to the SAED training modules available during the orientation program. He emphasized that white-collar jobs are increasingly scarce and that mastering practical skills would empower them to become self-reliant entrepreneurs and job creators post-service.

Moderate and Responsible Use of Social Media;
The DG cautioned corps members on their digital footprint, warning against the misuse of social media. He instructed them to avoid spreading fake news, hate speech, or posting unverified or unauthorized camp activities online. Instead, he encouraged using digital platforms for self-improvement, networking, and projecting a positive image of the country.

Desisting from Partisan Politics;
Corps members were strictly advised to maintain neutrality and refrain from engaging in partisan politics or political arguments during their service year. The DG highlighted that as corps members, they are non-partisan representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and must safeguard the credibility and integrity of the Scheme.

Reflection on the NYSC Anthem and Core Values;
The DG called on corps members to internalize and reflect deeply on the words of the NYSC Anthem. He noted that the anthem serves as a moral compass—reminding them of their duty, loyalty, selflessness, and commitment to serving the fatherland under all circumstances.

Prioritizing Personal Health and Hygiene;
Highlighting the importance of wellbeing, the DG advised corps members to take their physical and mental health seriously. He urged them to make full use of the camp clinic, maintain good personal hygiene, report any health issues early to camp medical personnel, and follow all health protocols.

Strict Prohibition of Unauthorized Journeys;
Reiterating the management's zero-tolerance policy, the DG warned corps members against embarking on unauthorized trips. He explained that traveling without approval from the State Coordinator endangers their lives, exposes them to road risks, and constitutes a serious disciplinary offense under the NYSC Bye-Laws.

Presentation of Cash Gifts to Corps Leaders;
To acknowledge dedication and exceptional leadership during the orientation exercise, the Director General announced and presented cash gifts to selected corps leaders. The reward served to recognize their efforts in maintaining order, coordinating peer activities, and demonstrating exemplary commitment to the service scheme.

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General OO Nafiu, has charged Corps Members to add value to themselves by acquiring relevant skills, embracing national integration, and upholding the ideals of the Scheme throughout their service year.

The Director General gave the charge during his visit to the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Kussala Dam, Karaye Local Government Area of Kano State, where he addressed Corps Members undergoing the orientation course.

Speaking on the objectives of the NYSC Scheme, Brigadier General Nafiu reminded the Corps Members that national unity and integration remain the foundational purposes of the Scheme. He urged them to step out of their comfort zones, interact freely with fellow Corps Members from different ethnic, cultural, and geopolitical backgrounds, and build meaningful relationships that could last beyond the service year.

On Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED), the DG encouraged Corps Members to take the programme seriously, noting that the current economic realities require young people to develop practical and entrepreneurial skills. As part of the social and recreational activities organized to foster integration, body positivity, and camaraderie during the orientation course, the social committee, in collaboration with the camp management, organized the "Miss Big, Bold and Beautiful" and "Mr. Slim and Handsome" Inter-platoon pageant.

The event provided a platform for corps members to showcase poise, intellectual ability, cultural versatility, and stage presence.

OFFICIAL WORKING VISIT OF THE DIRECTOR, NORTH WEST AREA OFFICE 1 MRS BAMAI MERCY DAWUDA

The NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Kussala Dam, Karaye, hosted the Director, North West Area Office 1, Mrs Mercy Bamai Dawuda on an official working and inspection visit.

The visit aimed to assess camp operations, evaluate Corps Members' welfare and discipline.

Upon arrival at the camp premises, the Director was received by the NYSC Kano State Coordinator, Haj Halima Abdulkarim Abubakar alongside principal camp officials.

The Director received a warm welcome at the quarter guard by the corps members before proceeding to the camp multipurpose hall.

Addressing the Corps Members assembled at the multipurpose hall, the Director, Mrs Mercy Bamai Dawuda praised their enthusiasm and orderly conduct.

She congratulated Corps Members for successfully completing their studies and answering the call for National service. She emphasized discipline as a fundamental value of the NYSC scheme and encouraged them to remain resilient in the face of challenges.

On national unity & Integration, the Director reiterated the primary mandate of the NYSC Scheme, urging Corps Members to embrace cultural diversity and foster peaceful coexistence across host communities.

Talking to the corps members on Skill Acquisition (SAED), she encouraged Corps Members to leverage on post-camp SAED training to build self-reliance and entrepreneurial skills needed in today's economy.

Mrs Bamai Advised Corps Members to remain vigilant, strictly follow safety protocols, and avoid unauthorized travel during their service year, she implored corps members to be security conscious and remain disciplined,
vigilant.

Meanwhile, the State Coordinator Haj Halima Abdulkarim Abubakar welcomed the Director and expressed appreciation for the Directorate's continuous support toward camp administration.

The SC reported smooth ex*****on of scheduled orientation activities, including Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) lectures, physical training, and leadership training. She equally told the Director that Corps Members have demonstrated discipline, active participation, and adherence to camp rules.

The Director was thrilled with a dance performance by the cultural troupe and she commended them for their energetic performance and artistic excellence

The official visit concluded successfully with 3 Hearty Cheers presented by the Corps Members, followed by an inspection tour of key camp facilities by the Director and camp officials.

FIRE SAFETY SENSITIZATION

The Fire Safety and Emergency Response Sensitivity Lecture took place at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp Karaye LGA of Kano state, to equip corps members with essential fire prevention, containment, and life-saving protocols during their service year and beyond. Facilitated by Principal Fire Supre pendant 1(PSI 1) Sabo Wada Abdullahi of the Kano State Fire Service.

The session combined theoretical instruction with practical, hands-on demonstrations outside the multipurpose hall.
