KTHSMB RECEIVES WACS ACCREDITATION TEAM FOR POSTGRADUATE RADIOLOGY TRAINING PROGRAMME ASSESSMENT AT GARSH

Alhadulillah, on Thursday 25th June 2026 the Katsina State Hospital Services Management Board (KTHSMB) received Accreditation Panel from the West African College of Surgeons (WACS), Faculty of Radiology for the assessment of the Radiology Department at the General Amadi Rimi Specialist Hospital (GARSH), Katsina, as part of the postgraduate residency training programme.

The accreditation panel, led by Prof. Abiodun Oludotun Adeyinka, as Chairman from the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Dr. Aisha Akintobi as a Secretary from the National Hospital, Abuja, and Prof. Muhammad Ibrahim Zakari of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria. The team was received by the General Manager of KTHSMB, Dr. Muhammad Nazir Shehu, alongside the Board's management team.

The exercise aligns with the healthcare transformation agenda of the Katsina State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Malam Dikko Umar Radda, PhD, CON, to expand postgraduate medical training within state-owned health facilities. The initiative is expected to strengthen specialist healthcare services, reduce the cost of sponsoring doctors for residency training outside the state, and enable resident doctors to continue serving Katsina while undergoing their specialist training in the same state owned specialist hospitals.

During the visit, the accreditation team held extensive discussions and toured the Radiology department as well as the newly established advanced imaging and multi speciality centre at GARSH, in order to assess the institution's readiness for postgraduate training.

The delegation also paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Hon. Musa Adamu Funtua, accompanied by the general manager and members of the KTHSMB management team. The visit reaffirmed the Katsina State Government's commitment to strengthening specialist medical education, developing healthcare professionals, and improving the quality of healthcare services across the state as approved and fully supported by H.E. the Executive Governor of Katsina State, Mallam Dikko Umar Radda PhD, CON.

On their remark, the accreditation panel expressed their profound gratitude and appreciation with the development they saw at the Radiology Department of GARSH. They were highly impressed with the visionary leadership of His Excellency the Governor for the establishment of advanced imaging and Multispecialty center, which is about to be completed at GARSH. The team expressed their confidence that the centre, when completed, will reduce the burden of unnecessary medical tourism outside the country from the state and the country in general.

N-SHIP PAYS ADVOCACY VISIT TO KTHSMB GENERAL MANAGER TO PROMOTE HIV/AIDS OWNERSHIP AND SUSTAINABILITY

The Nigerian Sustainability HIV/AIDS Impact Project (N-SHIP) paid an advocacy visit to the General Manager of the Katsina State Hospital Services Management Board (KTHSMB), Dr. Muhammad Nazir Shehu, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen HIV/AIDS response, promote state ownership, and ensure the sustainability of HIV services in Katsina State.

The visit underscored the importance of collaboration among government institutions, development partners, and healthcare stakeholders in sustaining gains made in the fight against HIV/AIDS and integrating HIV services into the broader healthcare delivery system.

The advocacy visit focused on promoting:
 State ownership of HIV/AIDS programmes and interventions.
 Sustainability of HIV/AIDS services through increased government commitment.
 Integration of HIV services into routine healthcare delivery across health facilities in Katsina State.
 Strengthened collaboration among key stakeholders to improve access to comprehensive HIV prevention, treatment, and care services.
The delegation emphasized that sustainable healthcare systems require greater local leadership, strategic planning, and institutional commitment to ensure uninterrupted HIV service delivery.

The N-SHIP advocacy team comprised representatives from key organizations involved in Nigeria's HIV/AIDS response:

✓ Pharm. Zach Bako – Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN)

During the meeting, the delegation engaged the General Manager on strategies to strengthen HIV/AIDS programme ownership, improve service integration, and enhance the long-term sustainability of HIV interventions across health facilities managed by KTHSMB.

In his remarks, Dr. Muhammad Nazir Shehu appreciated the delegation for the advocacy visit and reaffirmed the Board's commitment to supporting initiatives that improve healthcare delivery and public health outcomes. KTHSMB GENERAL MANAGER RECEIVES WACS ACCREDITATION TEAM FOR POSTGRADUATE TRAINING PROGRAMME ASSESSMENT

The General Manager of the Katsina State Hospital Services Management Board (KTHSMB), Dr. Muhammad Nazir Shehu, received the accreditation team from the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) during an official visit to Katsina State.

The visit was conducted as part of the accreditation process for the WACS Postgraduate Training Programme held at Turai Umaru Yar’adua Maternal and Children’s Hospital.

The accreditation team was led by Professor Patrick Haruna Daru, the Head of the Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the college.

Other members of the accreditation team included:

1. Dr. Mohammad Umar, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology
2. Dr. Adamu Saminu Adamu, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology
3. Dr. Aliyu El-Ladan, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology
4. Dr. Abdullahi Yahaya Musa, Consultant Family Medicine and Medical Director, Turai Umar Yar’adua MCH, Katsina
5. Dr. Rakiya Abdulmalik, Consultant Anesthesia among others.

The primary purpose of the visit was to assess and accredit the postgraduate residency training programme of the hospital under the auspices of WACS. The accreditation exercise focused on evaluating the institution’s training capacity, infrastructure, clinical exposure, manpower, and commitment to postgraduate medical education.

During the engagement, Dr. Muhammad Nazir Shehu expressed appreciation to the WACS team for their visit and reaffirmed the commitment of KTHSMB to supporting postgraduate medical training and strengthening healthcare service delivery across the state.
