Three Years On: Blue Line Moves 9m Passengers in 70,000 Trips
Three years after commencing commercial operations, the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line has moved more than nine million passengers in over 70,000 trips, emerging as a major driver of safer, faster and more predictable urban mobility in Lagos.
The milestone, which coincides with the third anniversary of the commencement of commercial services on September 4, 2023, comes as the Lagos State Government intensifies efforts to complete the outstanding infrastructure needed to extend the rail line from its current Mile 2–Marina corridor to Okokomaiko by 2027.
The Blue Line, which began operations with 12 daily trips, now operates about 94 daily trips, with a peak-period headway of 10 minutes and an operational reliability rate of about 99.5 per cent.
The rail service has provided thousands of commuters travelling between the mainland and Lagos Island with a dependable alternative to road transportation, enabling them to avoid the severe traffic congestion that routinely affects major road corridors.
The three-year milestone is also significant to Lagos' broader ambition to develop an integrated public transportation system that reduces dependence on private vehicles, cuts travel time, and supports economic and environmental sustainability.
To mark the anniversary, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, led the Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, Technical Adviser for Public Transport (Rail), Mr. Olasunkanmi Okusaga, and the Touch and Pay team, led by its Managing Director, Mr. Olamide Afolabi, to surprise commuters at the Marina Station with celebratory gifts.
The gesture was aimed at appreciating commuters for their continued patronage and partnership with the rail system.
Speaking on the significance of the milestone, Akinajo said the Blue Line had demonstrated the benefits of modern rail transportation through faster journey times, improved service reliability and effective revenue protection.
She noted that the current 10-minute peak-period headway had further enhanced the attractiveness of the service to commuters.
Beyond mobility, Akinajo said the electrically powered Blue Line was contributing to Lagos State's environmental sustainability objectives by providing a cleaner alternative to conventional fossil-fuel-powered vehicles.
According to her, increased patronage of mass transit has the potential to reduce the number of private vehicles and other road-based vehicles on the roads, thereby helping to lower transport-related emissions.
She said the expansion of rail transportation was part of the State's broader strategy to develop a cleaner, increasingly low-emission transportation system in line with its long-term zero-emission ambition.
The Blue Line has also created direct and indirect employment opportunities in railway operations, engineering, maintenance, security, station management, ticketing, customer service, cleaning and other ancillary services.
Akinajo disclosed that more than 95 per cent of the workforce are Nigerians, underscoring the project's contribution to local employment and skills development.
She added that commercial activities were also increasing around stations as improved accessibility attracted more people and businesses to areas along the corridor.
The trend, she said, was expected to gain further momentum through Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), which integrates residential, commercial and recreational activities around efficient public transportation.
According to her, effective implementation of TOD around Blue Line stations could transform surrounding areas into vibrant economic centres where residents could live, work, shop and access essential services without heavy reliance on private automobiles.
The Lagos State Government is currently working towards completing the outstanding infrastructure required to extend the Blue Line to Okokomaiko by 2027.
The completion of the full corridor is expected to bring rail services to more communities along the western axis of Lagos while strengthening the connection between the area and the central business districts around Marina.
It is also expected to deepen the integration of rail with buses and first- and last-mile transport services, creating a more seamless multimodal public transportation network.
Akinajo said the objective was to ensure that commuters could move conveniently from one mode of transportation to another, with rail serving as a backbone of Lagos' emerging integrated public transport system.
She commended the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for sustaining the political will and investment in the State's rail transportation infrastructure.
“The Blue Line is one of the most visible achievements of the administration's sustained investment in transportation infrastructure and its broader effort to build a more connected, productive and livable Lagos,” she said.
Akinajo described the project as the translation of a long-standing transportation vision into a functioning mass transit system that was already delivering tangible benefits to residents.
She assured that LAMATA would continue to focus on operational efficiency, service reliability, passenger experience, multimodal integration and the expansion of Lagos' rail network.
She described the three years of Blue Line operations as “more than an anniversary. It is a measure of how far Lagos has travelled in its quest to transform urban transportation.”
