The Nasarawa State Government has temporarily shut down Sandaji Hotel for violating environmental standards amid severe flooding in Lafia.
Environment Commissioner Princess Dr. Margaret Elayo inspected flood-affected areas and urged residents in flood-prone communities to relocate temporarily to safer locations. She identified blocked drainage systems, indiscriminate waste disposal, land reclamation, loss of water channels and ponds, and climate change as major factors worsening flooding.
She called for urgent attitudinal changes, better environmental practices, and an end to construction on waterways. The warning follows NiMet’s forecast identifying Lafia, Doma, and other parts of Nasarawa State as areas at risk of severe flooding.
