735 Public Servants Graduate from World Bank-Supported Capacity Building Programme in Nasarawa

A total of 735 public servants drawn from Federal and State Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) have graduated from a World Bank-supported capacity-building programme aimed at strengthening procurement, environmental, and social standards in public service.

The training, organized by the Centre for Innovation in Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards of the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, culminated in a graduation and certificate presentation ceremony held in Lafia.

The event was attended by the Acting Governor of Nasarawa State, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, alongside the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. John D.W. Mamman, senior government officials, and representatives of the organizing institution.

The specialized training was designed to equip participants with practical knowledge of modern procurement procedures, environmental safeguards, and social risk management to improve transparency, accountability, and efficiency in public sector operations.

The courses lasted between one and two weeks, depending on participants' areas of specialization. Procurement officers underwent an intensive two-week programme, while participants in environmental and social standards completed a one-week course.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Akabe applauded the World Bank and the Centre for Innovation in Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards for bringing the initiative to Nasarawa State, describing the programme as a significant investment in the capacity of the state's workforce.

He also commended the Head of the Nasarawa State Civil Service for ensuring that state public servants benefited from the training, noting that the initiative would enhance professionalism and strengthen institutional performance across government establishments.

The Acting Governor congratulated the graduates on successfully completing the programme and urged them to put the knowledge and skills acquired into practice. He further encouraged them to share the experience with their colleagues in their various ministries, departments, and agencies to promote innovation, improve service delivery, and deepen adherence to best practices in public administration.

The ceremony ended with the presentation of certificates to the 735 participants, marking the successful completion of the capacity-building programme and reaffirming the commitment of the Nasarawa State Government and its development partners to building a more competent and efficient public service.

Nasarawa Students Honour Gov. Sule, Education Commissioner, Permanent Secretary for Humanitarian Intervention

The Nasarawa State Students Association (NASSA), University of Jos Chapter, has honoured Governor Abdullahi A. Sule, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. John D.W. Mamman, and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Hajiya Khadija T. M. Suleiman, with Humanitarian Service Awards in recognition of their prompt intervention during the security unrest that occurred in Jos, Plateau State, earlier this year.

The association said the awards were in appreciation of the state government's swift response, which ensured the safe evacuation of Nasarawa students studying in Jos and their successful reunification with their families.

Speaking during the presentation, the students recalled that the crisis in Jos created anxiety among students and their parents. They commended the Nasarawa State Government for taking decisive action by directing relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), working in collaboration with security agencies, to coordinate the evacuation of students from the affected areas.

According to the association, the timely intervention demonstrated Governor Sule's commitment to the protection of lives and the welfare of students, describing the rescue operation as a remarkable act of compassionate and responsive leadership.

Governor Abdullahi A. Sule was represented at the ceremony by officials of the Ministry of Education, led by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Mr. Ogiri Christopher, alongside the Director of Special Education, Mallam Umar Ibrahim.

Presenting the awards to the Commissioner for Education and the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Ogiri Christopher said the honour was in recognition of their outstanding contributions to educational development and their selfless service to humanity.

Receiving the awards on behalf of the recipients, Dr. John D.W. Mamman and Hajiya Khadijat M. Suleiman expressed appreciation to the students for the recognition. They enjoy the students to study hard and to be good ambassador.

The award, they noted, would serve as an inspiration to remain committed to policies and programmes that promote the welfare, safety, and academic success of students both within and outside the state.

Nasarawa Hosts 19 Northern States' Monitoring Officers on Students Exchange Programme

The Nasarawa State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting quality education and national integration through the Students Exchange Programme (SEP) as it hosted the routine meeting of Monitoring and Inspection (M&I) Officers from the 19 Northern participating states.

Declaring the meeting open in Lafia, the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Education, Dr. John D.W. Mamman, urged monitoring officers to discharge their responsibilities with fairness, objectivity, and professionalism while conducting inspections across participating schools.

He stressed that the core objective of the monitoring exercise is to evaluate school activities accurately in order to strengthen the overall programme and raise educational standards across the region.

> "You are expected to report exactly what is happening in our schools with a view to strengthening the system. Your reports will provide government with first-hand information on the realities in our schools and guide the formulation of proactive measures to address the challenges confronting the programme," the Commissioner stated.

Dr. Mamman highlighted the Students Exchange Programme as one of the oldest and most successful collaborative educational initiatives among the 19 Northern states. He noted that the initiative was designed to foster unity, peaceful coexistence, and mutual understanding by allowing students to study in sister states, exposing them to diverse cultures and traditions.

According to the Commissioner, the scheme has continually deepened socio-cultural bonds among participating states, cultivated lasting friendships among students, and contributed significantly to regional cohesion.

Dr. Mamman expressed appreciation to the participating states for selecting Nasarawa State to host this year’s routine M&I meeting. He further commended Governor Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule for establishing an enabling environment for the state’s education sector through continuous investment in infrastructure, workforce welfare, and improved working conditions.

Assuring delegates of Nasarawa State’s hospitality, the Commissioner voiced confidence that the meeting would yield actionable recommendations to sustain and elevate the implementation of the exchange programme.

The routine meeting convened M&I delegates from across all 19 Northern states to evaluate school performances, review operational strategies, and chart pathways toward educational excellence and national integration.

Commissioner for Education Honoured with Garkuwan Matasa Arewa Award.

The Nasarawa State Commissioner for Education, Dr. John D.W. Mamman, has been honoured with the prestigious Garkuwan Matasa Arewa Award by the Council of Northern Youth Advocates of Nigeria (CNYAN) in recognition of his selfless service to humanity and unwavering commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence among diverse ethnic and religious communities.

Presenting the award, the President of CNYAN, Comrade Hon. Mohammed Abdul-Razaq, said the honour followed a thorough assessment of Dr. Mamman's outstanding record of public service, humanitarian interventions, and consistent efforts in fostering unity, tolerance, and community development. He noted that the Commissioner's exemplary leadership and dedication to the welfare of the people have made him a role model worthy of recognition.

Education Commissioner Leads Tree Planting Exercise to Promote a Greener Environment

The Commissioner for Education in Nasarawa State, Dr. John Mamman, has led management staff of the Ministry in a tree-planting exercise at the newly completed Ministry headquarters, aimed at creating a more welcoming and conducive working environment for staff and visitors.

Speaking during the exercise, Dr. Mamman said planting trees around the office complex was part of efforts to improve the appearance of the environment and make it more comfortable for workers. He noted that the palm trees and other varieties planted would provide shade, enhance the beauty of the surroundings, and contribute to a healthier atmosphere.

The Commissioner emphasized that trees play an important role in protecting the environment. According to him, tree planting helps reduce the effects of environmental degradation, improves air quality, prevents erosion, and contributes to the fight against climate change. He added that maintaining a green environment is essential for the well-being and productivity of workers.

Dr. Mamman further stated that the initiative is in line with the vision of Governor Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule's administration to provide a conducive and modern working environment for public servants. He said the greening of the new office complex reflects the government's commitment to environmental sustainability while supporting its drive towards a more efficient and digitalized public service.

The tree-planting exercise attracted the participation of management and staff of the Ministry, who described the initiative as a commendable step towards creating a cleaner, greener, and more pleasant workplace for all.

"Death has been described as an inevitable journey that every human soul shall undertake at an appointed time."

These were the words of the Commissioner for Education, Dr. John D.W. Mamman, when he led a delegation from the Ministry of Education on a condolence visit to the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Khadijat Suleiman Musa, following the death of her beloved brother.

The Commissioner expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family and prayed Almighty Allah to forgive the deceased, grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus, and give the family the strength and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Responding, Dr. Khadijat Suleiman Musa thanked the Commissioner and members of his entourage for identifying with her family during this difficult period. She prayed that Almighty Allah would reward them abundantly for their kindness, support, and prayers.

Special prayers were offered for the repose of the deceased's soul, asking Allah to grant him eternal rest in Al-Jannatul Firdaus.

Education Ministry Ends "Era of Complacency"; Mandates Strict Accountability for Principals

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Hajiya (Dr.) Khadijat Suleiman, has issued a stern directive to school administrators, declaring an end to laxity and administrative negligence in the state’s educational system.

Speaking on Thursday during a visit from a delegation of public secondary school principals from the Keffi Area Education Quality Evaluation Office, Dr. Suleiman warned that school leadership will now be held to rigorous, performance-based standards.

"The era of complacency in school administration is over," Dr. Suleiman stated. "The Ministry will no longer tolerate lapses in responsibility. You are expected to respond promptly to official communications or face appropriate sanctions."

The Permanent Secretary expressed concern over dipping academic standards and signaled a shift toward total transparency. As a Keffi native, she emphasized a personal commitment to strengthening the sector, with a specific focus on drastically reducing student dropout rates.

While thanking the State Government for her appointment, Dr. Suleiman pledged her full alignment with the Governor’s mandate to provide quality, accessible, and affordable education.

The delegation, led by Abubakar Laurat Shafa, noted that they visited to celebrate Dr. Suleiman’s elevation to the role, offering prayers for her success.

Supporting directors from the Ministry’s Human Resources, Quality Assurance, and Technical Education departments and High Education reinforced her message, urging the principals to prioritize duty and timely ex*****on of their responsibilities.

Nasarawa State Ministry of Education Tasks Principals and Teachers on Improved Performance

The Nasarawa State Ministry of Education has tasked principals and teachers to scale up their roles and responsibilities in order to promote efficient and effective teaching and learning in public schools across the state.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Hajiya (Dr.) Khadijat Musa Suleiman, gave the charge during an unscheduled visit to selected secondary schools under the Nasarawa, Mararaba Udege, and Agwada Area Education Quality Assurance offices. She was accompanied by the Director of Senior Secondary Schools Mr. Ogiri Christopher and Mrs. Bello Olu Director of Quality Assurance.

Schools visited included Government Secondary School Tammah, Government Junior Secondary School Tammah, Government College Nasarawa, Government Senior Secondary School Nasarawa, Government Junior Secondary School Kofar Kudu, Government Day Secondary School Nasarawa, Government Technical College Agwada, and Government Secondary School Eshshi in Mararaba Udege.

Addressing principals and teachers, Dr. Suleiman emphasized that the responsibility for students’ academic performance rests squarely with school administrators and teachers. She stressed the importance of keeping lesson notes and lesson plans up to date in line with the approved curriculum.

The Permanent Secretary expressed dissatisfaction with the attitude of some administrators and teachers, noting that some principals and duty officers were absent during official hours, while others allowed students to roam freely during class periods. She also observed cases of teachers neglecting scheduled lessons, discrepancies in students’ uniforms, and failure by some principals to provide desks and furniture despite collecting funds for that purpose.

On staff appearance, Dr. Suleiman frowned at improper dressing among personnel, reminding them that as role models to students, they must dress responsibly and professionally.

However, she commended the staff and students of Government Technical College Agwada for their impressive display of locally produced technical items, including cooking utensils, a grading machine, and furniture works. To boost morale, Dr. Suleiman purchased some of the cooking utensils produced by the students.

The Permanent Secretary assured that the Ministry will continue to support schools to improve standards and help students reach their full potential.
