📖Chapter 5📖
🥀NICOLA🥀
It had to have started sometime during the night. Maybe I'd taken a break and fallen asleep in the employee break room or maybe when that lady had hit me, I'd blacked out and hadn't woken up yet. Or maybe I'd never even come to Elysium and I was still at June's place, taking a little nap before work.
It was hard to pinpoint when exactly I could've fallen asleep and started dreaming up this entire experience but the answer had to be one of the three different instances that came to mind. Regardless of which it was, the bizarre night suddenly made sense. It'd all been a figment of my imagination. And it'd been a damn good one too.
Now that I knew it was a dream, I couldn't stop laughing. Since none of it was real, all the stress I felt as well as the tension in my shoulders melted away and all I could do was double over, clutch my stomach and laugh like I'd never laughed before.
If it gave it a little thought, it was definitely strange that I'd made the man who saved me from Bruce the day before the star of my dream but the mind worked in mysterious ways, not to mention that he had made quite the impression on me when we met. However, it was clear enough that my mind had played quite the trick on me.
I had no idea how long I laughed but it was long enough that when I finally stopped, my stomach hurt and I was practically wheezing when I tried to regulate my breathing. My face was also streaked with tears that had slipped out during my bout of laughter.
"So I take it you're done now?" “Enzo” asked, drawing my attention to him.
"If anyone's done, it's you. I'm tired of this dream and now I'm going to wake up," I retorted.
"Oh? Go ahead then. Wake up," he dared me, his eyes dancing with mirth.
I turned away from him and looked around the room nervously as I thought of what to do. How did one wake up from a dream they wanted to end? Didn't dreams usually end once you knew you were dreaming? If I wasn't waking up, did that mean—
No. No. This can't be real. I have to be dreaming. I just have to!
Wait, if I was dreaming, if I pinched myself, I should wake up, if the expression has any truth to it, that is.
I did just that, pinching my forearm hard enough to almost draw blood. It stung but as another expression went, no pain, no gain. This had to work.
Slowly, I opened my eyes but to my absolute horror, neither the room around me nor the amused man seating beside me had melted away. In fact, everything seemed rooted in place. It was real. It was all real.
No! No!! No!!!
My head whipped to the side. "Then— then you were being serious? You really meant what you said?!"
"I think the answer's as clear as day, Nicola. Or are you going to try and delude yourself into thinking that you're dreaming again?" he asked, a derisive edge to his words.
I cringed as the memory of me laughing and telling him this was all a dream flooded back. I was being delusional. Crazy too. I didn't think I'd ever live it down.
Desperate to regain some of my pride back — though if felt like that ship had long since sailed, I cleared my throat and sat up straight. "Even if this is not a dream, you have to be dreaming if you think I'll really agree to marry you."
"Why not? You haven't even asked me why I want to marry you."
"It doesn't matter. I don't know who you are and frankly, I don't want to know. Thank you for your help tonight but I hope this is the last time we have to see each other. Good night, Enzo." I stood up from the chair and started walking away. I half expected him to try and stop me or threaten me to stay which wouldn't have been out of character considering what he'd done but nothing happened as I made my way to the door.
However, just as I placed my hand on the doorknob, he finally spoke, "I picked you for a reason, Nicola and if there's one thing you should know about me is that I always get what I want. We'll be seeing each other again really soon."
I gripped the doorknob tight until my knuckles turned white with half a mind to turn around and tell him to stay the f**k away from me if he knew what was good for him. I managed to rein in my emotions and simply turned around to say, "Do have a lovely night, Sir."
The minute I was out of the room, I made a run for it and I didn't stop running until I was locked in one of the employee bathrooms downstairs, far far away from the VIP lounge. With my back pressed to the door, I slid to a heap on the floor and tried to collect my thoughts.
Tonight had been bizarre to say the least. A tiny part of me was still convinced this was all some elaborate dream but Enzo's derision had been very real. Enzo had been very real.
Enzo. The mere thought of him was enough to make me queasy. Our entire encounter had been very weird from start to finish and it left me with a sense of dread. I had no idea who he was but he knew who I was. And he wanted me to marry him which was by far the most bizarre thing that had happened tonight.
I had no intention of getting involved with him, much less getting married to him but from the little I'd seen tonight, Enzo was a very dangerous person and it wasn't going to be so easy to get rid of him.
"Damn it!" I groaned, burying my head in my hand unable to ignore the feeling of deja vu that threatened to overwhelm me. I was just so f**king unlucky.
* * *
"Fu***ng hell!" I cussed under my breath, my grip tight on the piece of paper in my hand. It was a letter that'd been delivered to June's place for me. The sender wasn't stated but the contents made it clear enough.
“Just in case you were thinking of quitting Elysium, you shouldn't seeing as you still owe me for yesterday.”
Attached to the letter was a drycleaning bill, likely the one for the dress I'd spilled wine on yesterday. I checked it and the amount was enough to make my jaw drop. It was absolutely ludicrous that anyone would pay that much to get their clothes dry cleaned.
Then again, seeing as the dress in question was expensive enough to buy me seven times over, I shouldn't have been so surprised the dry cleaning was so expensive.
Shaking my head, I balled up Enzo's letter and tossed it in a nearby trashcan. I slipped the drycleaning bill in my jacket pocket and continued to trudge the path towards June's apartment.
It was mid afternoon so I didn't expect her to be home. I wasn't supposed to be home either but my job search has been utterly futile.
After the whole craziness at Elysium last night, I'd decided that I couldn't keep working there. I hadn't officially quit yet but I had decided to look for another job, one that I'd be at during the daytime but given that I was an ex-con and I only had a high school diploma, I couldn't get any good paying jobs and even the low paying jobs were hesitant to hire me.
I didn't want to consider going back to Elysium but it really did seem like I was stuck there, especially with a hefty drycleaning bill now hanging on my neck.
Yeah, I wasn't having the best week.
I finally arrived at June's apartment and was about to open the door with the spare key she'd given me when I noticed that the door was slightly ajar. That was strange.
Stepping in, I called out, "June? You home?"
I heard nothing which was also very strange. I looked around the living room and though nothing was out of place, something felt very off. I'd been on edge after my apartment burned down and then running into Bruce and June had called me paranoid but something genuinely wasn't right.
If June wasn't home, then could it mean that someone has broken in? Were they still inside or had they left? It was quiet so maybe they'd left but I didn't want to take any chances.
My eyes scanned the room for something I could use as a weapon and I settled on an umbrella by the door. It wasn't very efficient but it would have to do. I grabbed the umbrella and began to slowly clear every room.
I checked each room carefully, which given the size of the apartment didn't take me long and soon only my room and June's were left. I checked mine first, approaching the room with shaky legs and clammy hands which I used to grip the umbrella tighter.
Thankfully, the room was empty but given the state of it, someone had definitely been in there. It didn't look like anything was missing but the room was messy like they'd ransacked the place. After a quick search to make sure that nothing was missing, I stepped out of the room and took out my phone to call the police.
I was on my way to the living room when I noticed the door to June's room was ajar. Realising that I'd forgotten to check it, I pushed the door open and what I saw was enough to bring me to my knees.
