Leadership decisions do not happen in isolation. They are shaped by policies, processes, institutions and resources.

The Class of Vanguards took a closer look at these systems during their orientation, exploring the processes that shape Lagos State’s political cycle, the rules and regulations that guide the public service, and what these mean for anyone entrusted with responsibility in government.

The Budget Process offered another practical lens, taking Fellows through fiscal planning, resource allocation and financial stewardship. They examined how priorities are translated into budgets, how resources are deployed and why accountability matters at every stage.

The sessions gave Fellows a broader understanding of what leadership in public service demands: not just the ability to make decisions, but the knowledge to understand the systems behind them and the responsibility to make those decisions count.

The Class of Vanguards were introduced to the LJLA Radio Show, by Fellows from the immediate past cohort who led the platform over the past year.

The session gave the outgoing radio team an opportunity to share their experience, explain how the show works and encourage the new Fellows to join in, contribute their voices and take ownership of the platform as they begin their own journey at LJLA.

The outgoing Fellows were also presented with certificates by the Executive Secretary, Mrs. Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade, in recognition of their commitment to the Radio Show over the past year.

The digital space is not just where we express ourselves. It is also where our words carry influence, shape perceptions and leave an impact.

The Class of Vanguards explored this during a session on social media etiquette with the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, examining how leaders can communicate with clarity, exercise good judgement and take responsibility for what they put into the public space.

From the message we share to the way we respond, every digital interaction says something about who we are. For the Fellows, it was a reminder that leadership does not stop when the room ends. It extends to how we engage, influence and represent ourselves online.

As their LJLA journey continues, they are gaining the awareness to use their voices thoughtfully, communicate with purpose and make their presence count, both offline and online.

From their experiences at LJLA to the paths they have taken since, alumni gave the Class of Vanguards an honest look at life during and beyond the Fellowship.

As part of the onboarding experience, the LJLA Alumni Panel brought alumni and the new Fellows together for an open conversation, moderated by the Executive Secretary, Mrs. Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade. They reflected on their time at LJLA, the lessons they gained, the relationships they built and how these experiences have shaped their journeys since.

The alumni also shared practical advice with the Class of Vanguards on making the most of their time at LJLA, navigating the challenges and opportunities along the way, and being intentional about the experience they are building.

Fellows, alumni and staff of LJLA received practical training in Basic Life Support, gaining hands-on knowledge of CPR and first aid and learning how to respond effectively in an emergency.

The training was encouraged by the Executive Secretary, Mrs. Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade, in recognition of the importance of ensuring that everyone within the LJLA community has the knowledge and confidence to provide immediate assistance when needed.

The session gave everyone the opportunity to learn, practice and build confidence in these essential skills, because knowing what to do in a critical moment can make a real difference.

Day One at LJLA.

The 2026/2027 Cohort “Class of Vanguards”, officially began their LJLA journey with a full day of introductions, conversations and connections.

From getting to know the Academy and its departments to one-on-one conversations with the Executive Secretary, team bonding and a closer look at the work that happens behind the scenes, the Fellows got their first taste of what their year at LJLA will look like.

And this is only the beginning. Welcome to LJLA, Class of Vanguards. We are excited to see where this journey takes you.

When new Fellows begin their journey at LJLA, fire safety is one of the practical skills they are introduced to early on.

Led by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the session gave Fellows practical knowledge of fire prevention, emergency procedures and the proper use of fire extinguishers. They also learned how to remain calm, alert and responsive in the event of a fire outbreak.

For LJLA, leadership development goes beyond professional knowledge. It is also about equipping Fellows with the awareness, responsibility and practical skills to respond effectively when safety is at stake.
