LAWMA STRENGTHENS SYSTEMIC RESPONSE TO RECURRENT WASTE BLACKSPOTS

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its systemic response to recurrent waste blackspots across Lagos, combining intensified waste evacuation with improved collection arrangements, targeted enforcement, infrastructure upgrades, community engagement and measures to prevent redumping at previously cleared locations.

The Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said on Monday that the Authority’s evolving approach was based on the recognition that recurring waste on road medians could not be sustainably addressed by repeated evacuation alone, stressing the need to tackle the operational and behavioural factors responsible for their recurrence.

He explained that LAWMA was increasingly combining the clearance of waste backlogs with interventions designed to ensure that waste generated within surrounding communities was properly captured, collected and evacuated, while enforcement was being strengthened against indiscriminate dumping, illegal waste collection and other practices that undermine the formal waste management system.

“Our approach is changing from simply clearing waste backlogs to addressing what causes them to return. Where there are service gaps, we are working with stakeholders to improve collection; where there is indiscriminate dumping, we are enforcing compliance; and where locations have been cleared, we are putting measures in place to prevent redumping, ”he said.

Gbadegesin noted that this approach was already being applied in some parts of the State, including Ayobo-Ipaja, where LAWMA had combined sustained evacuation of accumulated waste with enforcement against illegal waste collectors and defaulting markets and commercial facilities.

He added that in Mushin and Odi-Olowo, following the clearance of waste backlogs from major road medians, LAWMA was deploying collection trucks into inner streets to improve direct access to waste collection services and reduce the tendency of residents to move waste back to cleared medians.

The LAWMA boss said that the recent upgrade of critical infrastructure at the Olusosun Disposal Facility had also demonstrated the importance of strengthening the wider waste evacuation chain, with improvements in access and truck turnaround contributing to increased operational capacity.

He disclosed that the Authority was simultaneously strengthening collaboration with PSP operators through a participatory reform process aimed at improving route management, service delivery, fleet capacity, technology-driven monitoring, accountability and the long-term sustainability of the sector.

According to him, LAWMA was also intensifying enforcement against illegal waste operators, unauthorised markets and other activities that contribute to indiscriminate dumping, while engaging communities and other stakeholders to ensure that cleared locations remain clean.

He stressed that behavioural change remained a critical component of the response, noting that the continued dumping of waste on road medians, roadsides and other unauthorised locations often occurred despite the availability of approved waste collection arrangements.

“A clean city cannot be sustained by government action alone. We need residents, businesses, markets, PSP operators and communities to take responsibility for how waste is generated, handled and disposed of. Clearing a location only for it to become a dumping point again is not sustainable,” he said.

He maintained that the ultimate goal of the State Government was achieving sustainable waste management, driven by circular economy as indicated by the ongoing initiatives in that direction, including the development of transfer loading stations and material recovery facilities as well as promotion of waste-to-wealth and waste-to-energy among others.

While reaffirming LAWMA's commitment to a coordinated and data-driven approach to recurrent waste hotspots that combines operational interventions, enforcement, stakeholder engagement and infrastructure improvement to achieve cleaner communities and prevent the cycle of dumping, clearing and redumping, he urged residents to support the effort by patronising approved waste collection services, reporting service gaps and rejecting indiscriminate dumping, stressing that achieving a cleaner Lagos remained a shared responsibility.

The Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, joined the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the Honourable Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, and other top Lagos State and LAWMA officials in Festac, Amuwo-Odofin, for the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

The exercise featured environmental cleaning, waste evacuation, inspection and community sensitisation, with residents urged to take ownership of their environment, dispose of waste responsibly and patronise assigned PSP operators.

A cleaner Lagos is a shared responsibility.

The LAWMA Academy Summer School came to a successful close, marking the culmination of weeks of learning, creativity and hands-on environmental education.

At the closing ceremony, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA commended the children for their commitment, enthusiasm and impressive participation throughout the programme. The students also showcased the projects they developed, demonstrating their understanding of environmental sustainability, responsible waste management and the importance of keeping Lagos clean.

Certificates were presented to the participants in recognition of their successful completion of the programme, while the Most Outstanding Student was recognised for exceptional performance, dedication and impact.

Congratulations to all our young environmental champions. Their achievements are a reflection of the importance of investing in the next generation.

LAWMA SHOWCASES YOUNG ENVIRONMENT AMBASSADORS' CREATIVITY
.....As 2026 Summer School culminates in grand finale

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has showcased the creativity, knowledge and practical skills acquired by participants in its 2026 Summer School programme.

Speaking during the grand finale, held at LAWMA headquarters, Ijora-Olopa on Thursday, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on the Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu commended the management of LAWMA for the laudable initiative, describing the programme as a significant investment in the environmental consciousness of young people.

He urged the pupils to harness the knowledge and skills acquired during the programme to improve their lives and contribute meaningfully to the protection of the environment, stressing that everyone had a role to play in keeping the environment clean and sustainable.

The Special Adviser encouraged the young participants to become environmental ambassadors in their homes, schools and communities, while using the knowledge gained in circular economy and waste management to inspire positive behavioural change among their peers.

He further appreciated the Authority’s management for deepening environmental education among young people through the LAWMA Academy, noting that exposing children to sustainable waste management practices at an early age would help build a generation that is more conscious of its responsibility to the environment.

Also speaking, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, explained that the establishment of the LAWMA Academy was driven by the Authority’s commitment to educating and empowering young people with the knowledge required to become responsible environmental stewards.

He noted that the initiative was designed not only to promote proper waste disposal and environmental cleanliness, but also to expose young minds to the economic opportunities within the waste management and recycling sector.

According to him, waste, when properly managed, could become a valuable resource capable of creating jobs, supporting livelihoods and contributing to economic development, as waste management is not just about environmental responsibility but also about areas of opportunity. He expressed the optimism that the pupils would apply the lessons learnt at the academy, influence positive waste management practices within their homes and communities, and grow into responsible environmental ambassadors committed to building a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos.

Highlighting the various theoretical and practical activities undertaken by the participants, the Head of the LAWMA Academy, Mrs. Hauwa Momoh-Ajibola, provided an overview of the four-week summer school programmes, while explaining that the pupils were exposed to important aspects of waste management, including waste sorting, recycling, reuse, environmental sanitation and responsible waste disposal.

She added that the practical sessions had significantly enhanced their understanding of waste management and helped them appreciate the value of materials often regarded as waste as they had been equipped with environmental values that would extend beyond the classroom.

A total number of 80 students between the ages of 7 and 15 who participated in the 2026 LAWMA Academy Summer School, demonstrated their creativity and understanding of waste management through various innovative projects which were on display at the event.

Adekola Khadijah emerged as the Most Outstanding Student following her exceptional performance and innovative project, which was adjudged the best among the projects presented.

She distinguished herself by creatively transforming discarded carton paper into a signboard bearing the inscription “LAWMA Academy” and the Authority’s logo, demonstrating remarkable ingenuity and a strong understanding of recycling, reuse and resource recovery.

LAWMA IDENTIFIES CULPABLE OUTLETS FOR COMPLIANCE ENFORCEMENT IN AJAH-LEKKI

…Lists defaulting markets, commercial and institutional facilities across the axis
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has identified a number of markets, commercial and institutional facilities across the Ajah-Lekki axis for compliance enforcement over persistent violations of waste management requirements and other environmental regulations.
Speaking on the development, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed on Wednesday that the identified facilities include Kodak Moment, Bayrock Lifestyle, Caelum Nigeria Ltd, Alpha Pharmacy, Amazon Farm, Ramayaa Mall, Simply Africa Place, Aries Safia, Wolly Mall, Delightful Toy Shop, New Creation Church, The Logic Church, Dow Eye Clinic, Time Oak Hotel, L OMP, Furniture House, Fashion Design Factory, De Phantom Hotel, Elizade Motors, Trinity, Living Faith Church, Premium Rentals, Christ Chapel Church and QMB Mart.
He added that the facilities had been identified for compliance enforcement following observed violations, saying: “We have continued to engage and monitor facilities to secure compliance, but where establishments continue to default after being given the opportunity to comply, we will take the necessary enforcement measures. Our responsibility is to ensure that commercial activities do not compromise proper waste management or the right of residents to a clean and orderly environment.”
The development followed a monitoring and enforcement exercise conducted on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, by the LAWMA Project WISE team in collaboration with officials of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), military personnel and the Nigeria Police at the Eleganza and Issa Imamu Market areas of Ajah.
At Eleganza, the enforcement team dislodged illegal structures erected along road corridors and pedestrian walkways by traders, which had obstructed the movement of motorists and pedestrians, while Issa Imamu Market was sealed following persistent indiscriminate disposal of waste along the roadside.
Gbadegesin said that the Authority would continue to combine engagement and improved waste management services with firm compliance enforcement, stressing that operators within the corridor were expected to meet their waste management obligations.
He urged businesses, markets, institutions and residents to comply with approved waste management requirements and cooperate with LAWMA’s enforcement teams, noting that sustained compliance was essential to preventing indiscriminate dumping, protecting public spaces and maintaining a cleaner environment.
LAWMA reaffirmed its commitment to sustained monitoring, enforcement and stakeholder engagement to promote proper waste management and environmental compliance across Lagos State.
