ROAD OBSTRUCTION: SOMOLU LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL ENGAGES AMOKE OGE FOOD, SETS TWO-WEEK COMPLIANCE DEADLINE
The Somolu 10th Legislative Council, through its House Committee on Environment, chaired by Hon. Ibrahim Tajudeen Oduntan, today, Wednesday, August 26, 2026, convened a stakeholder meeting with the management of Amoke Oge Food to address persistent complaints regarding traffic obstruction and indiscriminate parking by dispatch riders and customers along Oguntolu Road, Somolu.
The meeting followed multiple petitions and complaints from residents concerning the activities of dispatch riders picking up and delivering orders from the restaurant, which residents said had resulted in the obstruction of the roadway, disruption of traffic flow and increased travel time along the axis.
The sitting commenced with an opening prayer by Mr. Odukoya, husband of the owner of Amoke Oge Food. Hon. David Joseph Olugbenro, thereafter welcomed the delegation and introduced members of the Committee.
In his remarks, the Majority Leader, Hon. Raheem Afees, expressed the Council’s concern over the late arrival of the Amoke Oge Food delegation for the scheduled meeting, stressing the importance of respecting official engagements convened to address matters affecting the community.
Addressing the stakeholders, the Committee Chairman, Hon. Ibrahim Oduntan, acknowledged the positive contributions of Amoke Oge Food to the local economy, particularly its role in creating employment opportunities for youths in Somolu. He, however, emphasized that such contributions must be balanced with the need to maintain public order, ensure free movement and protect the interests of residents.
Speaking during the deliberations, Hon. Olubiyi Afolarin highlighted the challenges caused by dispatch riders associated with the restaurant, noting that indiscriminate parking along the road had affected vehicular movement and created unnecessary delays for motorists and other road users.
The management of Amoke Oge Food was represented by Mrs. Amoke Odukoya, alongside her husband and brother-in-law. The management apologized for its initial late arrival, citing unforeseen circumstances, and acknowledged the concerns raised by the Legislative Council.
Mrs. Odukoya suggested the deployment of neighbourhood traffic control personnel to help manage the activities of dispatch riders around the premises and assured the Committee of the management’s commitment to working with the Council to achieve a lasting solution.
The Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Tunde James Oyeyiola, who joined the sitting, commended the Committee for prioritizing the interests and welfare of residents. He also appreciated the Amoke Oge Food delegation for attending the meeting, emphasizing that the Legislative Council has a constitutional responsibility to respond to legitimate petitions and concerns raised by residents.
He stressed that the objective of the intervention was not to hinder the business operations of Amoke Oge Food but to ensure that commercial activities are conducted responsibly without compromising public safety, traffic flow and the rights of other road users.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL’S RESOLUTIONS
Following extensive deliberations, the Committee and the Legislative Council reached the following resolutions:
1. Strict Prohibition of Road Obstruction: The management of Amoke Oge Food must ensure that dispatch riders and delivery personnel do not block, park on or occupy the public roadway while waiting to pick up orders.
2. Provision of Designated Parking/Waiting Area: The management is required to make adequate arrangements for a designated waiting and parking area within or around the premises to prevent obstruction of traffic.
3. Regulation and Monitoring of Dispatch Riders: The management must properly brief, regulate and monitor all dispatch riders, including riders operating through third-party logistics and delivery platforms, to ensure compliance with public order regulations.
4. Legislative Council Oversight: The Somolu 10th Legislative Council will continue to monitor the area to ensure compliance with the resolutions reached at the meeting.
5. Enforcement: Any subsequent verified complaint of persistent road obstruction will attract appropriate regulatory action and penalties in accordance with applicable municipal laws and regulations.
The Legislative Council granted the management of Amoke Oge Food a two-week timeline to implement the agreed measures and demonstrate substantial improvement in traffic management around the premises.
The Committee reaffirmed the commitment of the Somolu 10th Legislative Council to protecting the interests of residents, promoting responsible business practices and ensuring that public roads and other community infrastructure remain accessible to all.
Also present at the sitting were the Chief Whip, Hon. Sinat Adelaja; Hon. Tosin Taiwo Odubanjo; and Hon. Kehinde Alimot Jolaosho, alongside other members and stakeholders.
