5 Things to Know About Your Baby’s Movements During Pregnancy 🤍

One of the most exciting moments in pregnancy is feeling your baby move for the first time.

Those little flutters, kicks, rolls, and stretches can become a beautiful part of your daily routine.

But your baby’s movements also provide important information about their wellbeing.

Here are 5 things every expecting parent should know about fetal movements.

1️⃣ You’ll usually start feeling movements between 16 and 24 weeks.

For first-time mothers, movements may not become noticeable until after 20 weeks.

At first, they may feel like gentle flutters or bubbles. As your baby grows, the movements often become stronger and easier to recognise.

2️⃣ Every baby has their own movement pattern.

Some babies are more active at certain times of the day, while others have different patterns.

As pregnancy progresses, you’ll gradually become familiar with what’s normal for your baby.

3️⃣ Movements may feel different as your baby grows.

As your pregnancy advances, kicks may begin to feel more like stretches, rolls, or pushes.

However, your baby should continue moving regularly, including towards the end of pregnancy. A reduction in movement should never be dismissed as simply a lack of space.

4️⃣ Changes in your baby’s movements deserve attention.

If your baby is moving less than usual, movements feel weaker, or you notice a significant change in their normal pattern, contact your maternity care team immediately.

Don’t wait until the next day or your next antenatal appointment to seek advice.

5️⃣ There’s no single movement count that applies to every baby.

Rather than comparing your baby’s movements with someone else’s, focus on recognising your baby’s usual pattern.

5 Pregnancy Discomforts You Can Actually Do Something About 🤰🏽

Pregnancy is an incredible journey, but let’s talk about something many expecting mothers experience: the discomforts that come with it.

From heartburn that keeps you awake to back pain that makes everyday activities difficult, pregnancy can bring changes that aren’t always pleasant.

The good news? There are simple ways to manage some of these discomforts and make pregnancy a little more comfortable.

Here are 5 common pregnancy discomforts and what you can do about them. 🤍

1️⃣ Heartburn

That uncomfortable burning sensation in your chest is common during pregnancy, especially as your baby grows.

Try eating smaller, more frequent meals, avoiding foods that trigger your symptoms, and staying upright after eating. If heartburn persists, ask your healthcare provider about pregnancy-safe treatments.

2️⃣ Back Pain

As your body changes to accommodate your growing baby, your posture and centre of gravity shift, which can contribute to back pain.

Gentle stretching, supportive footwear, good posture, and pregnancy-appropriate exercises may help. A supportive pillow while sleeping can also make a difference.

3️⃣ Constipation

Pregnancy hormones can slow digestion, making constipation a common complaint.

Increasing fibre-rich foods, drinking enough water, and staying physically active can help keep your bowels moving. If constipation continues, speak with your healthcare provider about safe treatment options.

4️⃣ Leg Cramps

Sudden, painful leg cramps, especially at night, can interrupt your sleep and leave you uncomfortable.

Gentle calf stretches, staying hydrated, and regular movement may help. When a cramp happens, try straightening your leg and gently pulling your toes towards you.

5️⃣ Difficulty Sleeping

Between frequent bathroom trips, physical discomfort, and hormonal changes, getting a good night’s sleep can become challenging.

Try maintaining a consistent bedtime routine, using pillows for support, limiting caffeine, and creating a comfortable sleeping environment.

🌿 A gentle reminder: Pregnancy discomforts may be common, but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer through them.

Baby Eczema & Dry Patches 🌸

Rough, red or dry patches on your baby’s skin? It could be eczema, but other skin conditions can look similar.

Here are 3 things that may help:

🛁 1. Keep baths short and lukewarm. Plain water is often enough. Apply a fragrance-free, moisturising cream immediately afterwards.

👕 2. Reduce potential triggers. Choose fragrance-free laundry detergent, avoid fabric softener and dress your baby in soft, breathable cotton.

🩺 3. Watch for signs of infection. If the skin becomes increasingly red, oozes, develops crusts or worsens, have your baby checked by a doctor.

💬 Comment “SKIN” below, and we’ll send you the link to join our free Midwife Life Talk WhatsApp Group, where you can ask questions and get guidance from an experienced midwife. 🌸

Many parents worry about getting everything right.

But children aren’t looking for perfection. They’re looking for love, connection, and someone who keeps showing up for them. 🌿

Here are 5 things that matter more than perfect parenting:

1️⃣ Being emotionally available.
Your child doesn’t need you to have all the answers. They need to know you’ll listen, comfort them, and be there when they need you.

2️⃣ Repairing after difficult moments.
Every parent loses patience sometimes. What matters is coming back, apologizing when needed, and rebuilding connection.

3️⃣ Being present.
A few minutes of undivided attention can mean more than hours spent together while distracted.

4️⃣ Creating a safe space for emotions.
When children know they can express joy, sadness, frustration, or fear without being dismissed, they develop emotional confidence.

5️⃣ Loving them consistently.
Children flourish when they know your love isn’t based on perfect behaviour or achievements. Feeling accepted gives them the confidence to grow and explore.

There is no such thing as a perfect parent.

But there are loving, patient, and present parents, and that’s what children remember most. 🤍

Children don’t need a perfect childhood to feel secure.

What they need most is the consistent reassurance that they are loved, protected, and accepted. It’s the little things you do every day that help build that sense of security. 🌿

Here are 5 everyday ways to help your child feel secure:

1️⃣ Be consistent when you can.
Simple routines like bedtime stories, family meals, or goodbye hugs help children know what to expect. Predictability helps them feel safe.

2️⃣ Respond to their emotions with empathy.
When your child is upset, let them know their feelings matter. Listening before correcting teaches them that home is a safe place to express themselves.

3️⃣ Keep your promises.
If you say you’ll be there, do your best to follow through. Consistency builds trust, and trust is the foundation of emotional security.

4️⃣ Spend uninterrupted time together.
Even 10 to 15 minutes of focused attention without phones or distractions can make a child feel deeply valued and connected.

5️⃣ Remind them they’re loved every day.
Through your words, hugs, encouragement, and presence, let your child know they are loved for who they are, not just for what they do.

Children grow with confidence when they know they have someone they can always come back to.

Security isn’t built in grand gestures. It’s built in the ordinary moments, repeated with love. 🤍
