ARE THE POLICE FOR OR AGAINST THE PEOPLE
The horrifying killing of Oghenemine by the police in Effurun, near Warri in Delta State recently has yet again raise the question whether indeed the police in Nigeria are for the people or against the people.
The young man had been arrested, brutally tied down like a beast and in spite of his crying and pleading for mercy ASP Nuhu Usman still insisted on gunning the hapless man down. This is the height of wickedness.
ASP Nuhu, in utter disregard for all that is decent and lawful constituted himself into the police, investigator, judge and executioner.
More painful is the fact that while the police officer was in the demonic act, behaving like one possessed, while it all lasted, the other operatives on the patrol team, looked on sheepishly. None of them could summon the courage to intervene and restrain him from the madness that was set to push them all into disaster.
We at Save Democracy in Nigeria (SDNF) strongly demand that the culprits be speedily prosecuted and severe punishment meted out to them.
It's outrageous that the same police that failed to protect Nigerians from repeated killings by bandits, insurgents, herdsmen and kidnappers should turn around to be killing the citizens.

CRITICISM AND HYPERCRITICISM

We heard that the minister of power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu has resigned from office to pursue a higher position. His tenure was assailed by the criticism that he was not suited for the position being an accountant by profession and not an engineer. Poor fellow.

This is rather unfortunate as criticisms like this can cause avoidable distraction and make such a public office holder to lose focus.

A minister is a policy formulator, an intermediary between the president and the concerned ministry. A minister is a public administrator, one whose core responsibility is to mobilize resources – man, money and materials for the ministry. A minister doesn’t handle tools or go down to do the skill job in their assigned government department. This is the duty of the staff of the department who have among the fold experts that carryout the day to day job in the ministry.

What is required of a minister is a public/business administration background which obviously the outgone minister doesn’t lack being an accountant and a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Whether Mr Adebayo Adelabu performed his duty creditably for the period that he held sway at the ministry is what should be of concern to the public and not petty evaluation.
