29 Nigerians undergo cataract screening as China renews free eye care initiative.
The Chinese Community in Lagos has reaffirmed its commitment to providing free cataract for low-income Nigerians under the ‘Renewed Hope, Rebirth of the Light’ Programme.
The renewed commitment comes as the programme records another milestone with 29 cataract patients undergoing pre-operative examinations at The Eye Doctors Clinic in Gbagada, Lagos ahead of their surgeries, stated that a total number of 770 patients have regained their sight under the initiative since it begun.
Among the beneficiaries is 82-year-old Alhaji Bashiru Aregbe, who has lived with cataracts for several years, leaving his vision severely impaired.
He is one of the latest beneficiaries of the Chinese community’s free cataract treatment initiative aimed at restoring sight to low-income Nigerians.
Speaking on the significance of the programme, Chairman of the HuaXing Arts Troupe in Nigeria, Dr Eric Ni, described philanthropy as more than a slogan, saying it is a commitment to action regardless of the background of a patient.
He said: “Philanthropy is never just a slogan; it is a genuine, step-by-step commitment to action, regardless of where the patients come from, what occupation they hold, or what religion they practice. As long as they need it, we remain open arms.
”This care from Chinese expatriate groups is always available throughout Nigeria, without any barriers or distinctions.”
Ni extended appreciation to the Chinese community in Lagos and members of the overseas Chinese business community whose support has sustained the programme.
He said: “We appreciate the Consulate-General of China in Lagos for their unwavering support and to all friends from the community of overseas Chinese businesses for their generous participation, which has provided a solid foundation for this act of love.”
He called on Nigerians to see the initiative as a lasting expression of friendship between the two countries.
”We call on every Nigerian friend to remember that the Chinese community has always been present and will never leave. We are always on the path of serving the public good, and for what comes next, may light illuminate even more corners,” he said.
The ‘Renewed Hope, Rebirth of the Light’ programme continues to stand as one of the most visible expressions of Chinese-Nigerian people-to-people diplomacy, combining medical outreach with a broader message of solidarity between the two nations.
