Autonomy; The Right Approach To Save Local Government From Total Collapse

Since my Primary school days, I learnt that there are three tires of government in Nigeria, which includes the federal government, the state government, and the local government. While advancing in my educational career, I was made to understand that all the tires of government has similar and key roles to play for the functionality and sustainability of our beloved country Nigeria.

Unfortunately in recent years, the leadership of LGAs across the federation are just figureheads, thereby making Grassroot governance to be directionless, clueless, and uninteresting.

From my observation, which many of you will quite agree with me, state governors are largely responsible for the underdevelopment and extreme poverty in Nigeria today, as most of them has greedily hijacked the local government sector, into their personal property—testing ground for regnancy—selecting whoever they like as LGA chairpersons. This is mischievous and anti-democratic.

Is Abba The Ultimate Winner In Kano?

By Abdulbaki Jatto

As the result of 2023 gubernatorial election is officially declared by INEC, with candidate of the juvenile New Nigeria Peoples Party, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf as the winner, against the incumbent Deputy Governor of the state, Hon. Nasir Gawna of All Progressive Congress, people within and outside the state has mixed feelings about the election outcome.

The fans of democracy are impressed with the fact that the incumbent Ganduje led administration don't utilise state machineries or go against the rule of law this time around, to overturn the choice of the majority, so that his Deputy can succeed him as the next Governor.

Prior to the election, with the stellar performance and mentorship of NNPP national leader, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso over the years in Kano state, it is easy to predict that his candidate, Abba will comfortably emerge as the winner.

Kwankwaso's Educational project alone has earned him high esteem in northern Nigeria, of which Kano people are major beneficiaries. Tell me, why won't his mentees or those he recommended for various portfolios in Kano state not be at great advantage?

How many past Presidents or Governors can command so much respect in their state till today? How many of them are people still confident to associate with? How many of them are people proud of? The thing all public office holders should know is that, you cannot remain relevant for ages through manipulation—mischief—abuse of Power—incompetency. In fact, egocentrism and bad policy cannot stand the test of time.

Albeit, much credit should be given to the supporters of NNPP, as they are not swayed by the fact that this is a party without deep-rooted structure outside Kano against giant APC (who just produced Tinubu as the next President after Buhari of APC). They overlooked the odds, voted and ensure to defend their votes for Abba of NNPP. They are warriors for preserving our democracy. These people are indeed the WINNER. I hope and pray that the Governor-elect will even exceed his people expectations, when he officially resume office.

Other states of the federation need an exemplary leader like Kwankwaso. As for all citizens, it is our fundamental duty to always be patriotic and purposeful towards national growth.

“I never cried that there was no money (to run my administration) because i said i want to become governor. Any day a leader starts crying that there is this, there is that one, that means there is inadequacy in the leadership and if you are not prepared to face challenges as a leader then you should leave it for those people who are ready to face challenges.” — Governor Dankwambo

The best way to ensure that “good” and competent people participate actively in politics is to cut the cost of both electioneering and governance.

Democracy Facts

Democracy is a system that gives every person, with a legal right to vote, the opportunity to vote for the representatives they wish to make government decisions.

Democracy is meant to give every citizen the ability to vote in elections in a free society, the protection of human rights, and law that applies to everyone equally. The term 'democracy' appeared in Greek philosophy and politics in Athens, and the Athenians established the first democracy in 508-507 BC. The word 'democracy' meant 'rule by the people'. President Abraham Lincoln defined democracy as "Government of the people, by the people, for the people."

Dear Kogites and entire Nigerians, grassroot election is as important as presidential election. So don't forget to elect credible representatives.

“To whom much is given much is expected.” This phrase is not applicable in our political institution. Even if our support for some candidates is based on their past records or achievements, we cannot be so confident that they will perform better if they eventually emerge. And to even realize that, some people are proficient in speaking but very poor in implementation of policies is another turnoff in polity. You see, why we need to think outside the box of propaganda and stereotype?

Governance is a serious business, and not a child's play ground. Whoever the next President of Federal Republic of Nigeria is must exhibit high sense of commitment, self-discipline, selflessness and creativity to ensure this country becomes an enabling environment for her entire citizens.
