Zulum @57: On The Crest Of History

Governor Babagana Workaphile Zulum's new age, 57, opens a vista on a golden future for Borno

Dauda Iliya

The Executive Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, will turn 57 tomorrow, Tuesday, 25th August, 2026.

Lest we forget, his middle name is 'Workaphile', a fond name he acquired for his passion and commitment to work, and for his almost year-round trotting around the state, coordinating reconstruction and ministering to the needs of the terrorised population.

It is pertinent to view this year's birthday celebration far beyond the usual, mundane, and insipid tradition of sending birthday wishes and congratulatory message placements in the print and electronic media and on social media pages, and the rollout of programmes or social activities for that purpose.

As his last birthday in office, Zulum's new age, 57, its celebration and what he has, as a public servant and governor, accomplished by its attainment, are all bound by the bond of faith in the sacredness and potency of the covenant he struck with his fellow Bornoans who elected him their governor in 2019, and re-elected him in 2023.

The covenant: On their unshakeable faith in his character, credibility, capacity and commitment to coordinate the course of their affairs according to their needs and aspirations, they would elect him governor. He would, on his part, deploy that character, credibility, capacity, and commitment, and perhaps even more than expected, to govern them according to those needs and aspirations.

They fulfilled their own part of the covenant. They elected him in 2019, and re-elected him in 2023. He is fulfilling his part with as much zest and credibility as he can muster in all circumstances.

At 57, his zest for that fulfilment has attained its zenith. For him, there is no alternative to that fulfilment.

At 57, his focus is firmly fixed, much more than at any time over the last seven years, on breaking the tape at the finish

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has disclosed that the federal government and Borno State Government are working closely to ensure the safe rescue of schoolchildren abducted from M***a community in Askira/Uba Local Government Area.

The Governor stated this on Friday during a meeting with parents of the abducted children at the Government House, Maiduguri. The meeting was convened at the request of the parents, who have been calling for urgent action from the authorities.

Zulum expressed the deep sympathy of the Tinubu-led Federal Government and reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's personal commitment to ensuring the children are safely returned to their families.

He assured the parents that, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and Borno State Government will do everything possible to secure the children's release.

“On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, I once again extend my sympathies over what happened at M***a Central Primary School on the 15th of May 2026 that led to the abduction of about 44 primary school pupils,” Zulum said.

“Also, on behalf of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I want to sympathise with you. I want to assure you that Mr President has since directed security agencies to ensure the rescue of our children, and I believe they are working to ensure their rescue”, He stated.

Zulum: Borno Launches New 61 Million Euro UN Peacebuilding Initiative

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has announced the launch of a new 61 million Euro United Nations Peacebuilding Fund Programme aimed at consolidating peace and supporting recovery efforts in the state over the next two years.

Governor Zulum said this while briefing journalists after the fourth UN Offer Board and Peacebuilding Fund Steering Committee meeting at Government House, Maiduguri.

He said the meeting was convened to formally close the first phase of the programme, which received a lot of support from the Government of Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and other development partners over the last two years.

According to the governor, the funds were deployed for peacebuilding activities across the state, adding that the successful implementation of the previous phase informed the decision to commence a new and expanded intervention.

“Another new phase of the UN offer has also been launched, amounting to about 61 million euro, which should be spent within the next two years,” Zulum said.

Governor Zulum said Germany had already contributed about 10 million Euros to the new basket fund, and expressed optimism that the United Kingdom, Switzerland and other partners would make additional contributions.

He added that Borno State Government would also commit funds to the basket to demonstrate its ownership of the programme and support its implementation.

The Governor commended the United Nations Resident Coordinator, the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and development partners for their continued support to peacebuilding in the state.

He particularly thanked the governments of Germany, the United Kingdom and Switzerland for their contributions, noting that sustained international partnership remains critical to rebuilding communities affected by insurgency and promoting durable peace in Borno St

Zulum Hosts 4th UN Offer Meeting, Seeks Stronger UN, Donor Investment for Borno’s Recovery

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has called for stronger collaboration and co-investment between the state government, the Federal Government, the United Nations, development partners, international financial institutions, and the private sector to accelerate recovery and sustainable development in the state.

Zulum made the call on Thursday at the Council Chambers of the Government House, Maiduguri, at the fourth Project Board Meeting of the United Nations Offer to Support the Borno Model and the Steering Committee Meeting of the Peacebuilding Fund.

A Federal Government delegation, the United Nations, Development Partners, and Donor agencies attended the meeting.

The governor said the decision to hold the high-level meeting in Maiduguri reflected Borno’s strategic importance in national and international efforts towards peacebuilding, stabilization, recovery and sustainable development in Nigeria’s North-East.

He commended the United Nations, donor countries and development partners for their financial and technical support, noting that their interventions had improved the lives of vulnerable people and communities affected by more than a decade of insurgency.

According to Zulum, the Peacebuilding Fund and the UN Offer have helped to move support beyond immediate humanitarian relief to critical areas such as reconciliation, reintegration, livelihood support, social cohesion and institutional strengthening.

“We recognize that progress in Borno is a product of strong partnerships among the state government, the United Nations, development partners, communities, the Federal Government and other stakeholders,” Zulum stated.

He described the development of the Borno Model legal framework as a major product of the partnership between the state government and the United Nations, saying it would provide a stronger institutional foundation for peace, recove
