Aliyu Aboki, WATRA’s Executive Secretary, was a panelist at International Telecommunication Union’s Regional Development Forum for Africa. (RDF-AFR) 2026, which held from the 25th to the 26th of May 2026 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

The two-day forum, themed “Universal, meaningful, and affordable connectivity for an inclusive and sustainable digital future”, served as a platform for ITU and its stakeholders to discuss the newly adopted regional initiatives for Africa and exchange views on achieving meaningful connectivity and sustainable digital transformation in the region.

During his panel session, the Executive Secretary advocated for the role of regional cooperation and harmonization in making the regional initiatives more ready for investment, and clarified the need for concrete regulatory enablers, like predictability and the smart use of public funds, in order to unlock these private sector investments.

Engr. Aliyu Aboki, WATRA’s Executive Secretary, was a lead presenter at the National Telecommunications Policy Review Workshop, which held on, the 20th and 21st of May 2026 in
Lagos, Nigeria.

The workshop, which was themed “The National Telecommunications Policy 2000: Implementation, Milestones and Next Steps”, was organized as part of NCC’s ongoing efforts to update the country’s telecommunications policy framework to align with current realities, technological advancements, and the evolving needs of the Nigerian digital economy.

“The National Telecommunications Policy 2000 successfully helped connect millions of Nigerians and catalyzed one of Africa’s most important telecommunications transformations,” Engr. Aboki stated during his presentation. “Nigeria has already demonstrated that bold policy reform can reshape a nation. The next challenge is to help shape the future of Africa’s digital economy itself.”

WATRA participated in ITU’s Africa-Europe BB Mapping Study Visit and Policy Training, which held from the 19th to the 21st of May 2026 in Bucharest, Romania.

The three-day course, organized by and ANCOM-Romania, combined European and African experiences to strengthen the policy, legal and regulatory capacities of national authorities (NRAs) responsible for broadband mapping governance and data-driven connectivity planning, and to advance evidence-based approaches for better connectivity outcomes.

Mr. Ruffus Samuel, WATRA’s Principal Manager, Partnerships, attended the workshop, championing WATRA’s role as a strategic part of the regional broadband mapping process. Presenting to the participants, he emphasized WATRA’s role in harmonizing broadband policies and technical standards, facilitating regional data exchange, increasing transparency for investors and policymakers, supporting infrastructure sharing, and strengthening regional coordination for cross-border planning.

Engr. Aliyu Aboki, WATRA’s Executive Secretary, attended GSR-26, ITU’s yearly global platform for knowledge exchange between regulators, which held from the 12th to the 15th of May 2026 in Ankara, Türkiye.

The annual symposium issues guidelines to help regulators govern the digital market with clarity, evidence, and coherence.

The discussions and workshops centered around themes of data-driven and future-oriented regulation, inclusive and universal connectivity, collaborative governance, strategic infrastructure development, and innovation and sustainability.

WATRA has concluded its 23rd Annual General Meeting with the adoption of a landmark 2026–2030 Strategic Plan and the installation of a new Council of Regulators under the leadership of Mr. Michel Yaovi Galley , Director-General of ARCEP Togo.

Held in Lomé from April 20 to 24, 2026, the meeting brought together national regulatory authorities, development partners, and industry stakeholders to advance a shared regional agenda focused on regulatory harmonization, expanded connectivity, and accelerated digital transformation across West Africa.
