We were pleased to welcome the leadership of the Nigerian Indigenous Women in Mining Organisation (NIWIMO) to the Australian High Commission, to hear about activities supported through the Australian Government’s Direct Aid Program.

It was heartwarming to see the impact of this initiative across mining communities in Nasarawa, Osun, Bauchi, and Ebonyi States, where it has supported capacity-building and consultations with women in mining. Beneficiaries also received safety kits and personal protective equipment, while newly installed boreholes are improving access to clean water and supporting the wellbeing of their communities.

The Australian High Commission is proud to partner with NIWIMO on this locally led project, which is helping women miners build a stronger collective voice. It supports women-led cooperatives, safer working conditions, stronger institutional partnerships, and greater access to economic opportunities. ⛏️💧🤝

The Australian High Commission recently visited the No Hunger Food Bank's Direct Aid Program project at Karon Majigi IDP Camp in Abuja. 💛✨

It was inspiring to see first-hand how this community-led initiative is strengthening family nutrition and supporting displaced women and households through practical, sustainable solutions.

We were particularly moved by the warm welcome from the beneficiaries, who greeted us with singing, dancing, and heartfelt messages.

Their spirit, resilience and enthusiasm were a powerful reminder of the impact that locally led initiatives can have in creating positive change.

Australia is proud to support local organisations through our Direct Aid Program, helping improve the lives of vulnerable communities.

This International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we honour the cultures, traditions and knowledge systems that have connected communities across generations.

At this year's Garma Festival, Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong noted that "centuries before Europeans arrived, First Nations People connected Australia with the world." That powerful legacy of connection continues today and resonates strongly in Nigeria, a country rich in diverse cultural traditions and histories that shape communities and inspire future generations. 🌏🤝🇦🇺🇳🇬

As Australia and Nigeria continue to strengthen people-to-people links, we recognise the importance of preserving and celebrating Indigenous and traditional cultures as a source of identity, resilience and connection. 🌏🇦🇺🇳🇬

Happy International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples!
