How do UGWU wholesalers keep their businesses running long after the rain has gone?

The answer? Irrigation.

And the good news is, it’s not just UGWU. Many different crops can be grown with irrigation, even during the dry season.

For us in Benue State, water is not some distant idea.

You can supply water to your farm, purchase water for irrigation, or develop your own water source, such as a borehole, depending on your location and what works for your farm.

Last week, we asked:

“What part of agriculture would you like to build a career or business in? Choose one.”

One of you chose production and value addition — @ Elizabeth Ojeka— and we thought, let's explore what that actually means.

So, what does production and value addition look like?

Cassava is a simple example.

First, cassava is cultivated and harvested. That is production.

Then, the cassava can be processed into products such as garri, flour or starch. That is value addition.

From producing the raw agricultural product to transforming it into something with additional uses and market opportunities, you can be part of more than one stage of the value chain.

You don't necessarily need to own a farm or have land to participate in agriculture. There is a place for you across the value chain.

While speaking to people about joining the BAC, I noticed something. Almost everyone had the same concern: “I don’t have land.”

And it made me realise that perhaps we have been looking at agriculture too narrowly.

You don’t necessarily need to own land to have a place in the agricultural value chain.

There’s cultivation, irrigation, transportation, farm maintenance, marketing, delivery, food vending, agricultural technology and equipment, as well as land assessment to determine what grows best.

My Benue people, we cannot all be farmers, but we can all contribute to agriculture.

This International Youth Day, we celebrate young people under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.” While our circumstances may differ, our desire for opportunity, growth and a better future is shared.

For young people in Benue, agriculture offers far more than farming—from production and processing to technology, logistics, marketing and agribusiness.

But potential needs opportunity, knowledge, mentorship, networks, markets and access to finance to become reality.

That is why the Benue Agripreneurs Community (BAC) exists.
